So I'm sure most of you have heard already, but Contra 4 was announced for Nintendo DS recently. It's mostly inspired by Super C and Operation C with some aspects from Contra 3, but it ignores all Contra games after 3 in its inspirations. And the music is being done by virt, hooray! Here's some gameplay videos from an early build: http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3160432&type=game&sec=VIDEOS

So Contra Hard Corps wasn't Contra 4? (And neither was "Contra Fource", as I like to joke?)

Gah. I hate those dumb embedded videos, why won't they just let me download the stupid file? Edit: oh wait, there is a download link. Of course it isn't a direct link to the file. Apart from that, cooooooooool. Once I get that, and Megaman ZX, I think I won't need any more DS games since I'll just be playing those over and over.

Chronologically speaking, this is the fourth game in the series (if you ignore Operation C).

Well, to be fair, didn't they have to claim the characters in Contra 3 were look-alike descendants of the characters in Contra 1 because they changed Contra 1 to occur in the present? At least the aliens still go by the " [animal]" naming scheme.

Wow, that grappling hook looks like a big fat "hello" to Rygar. But as much as I like cameos and all that stuff, I'd still like to see something a bit more original than a rehash of Contra 3.

The whole "destroying the timeline" thing is that the names Mad Dog and Scorpion appear as references to the US version of Contra 1, and Black Viper to the US version of Operation C? Did they forget that the first three Contra US games take place in the 1950s, so Mad Dog and Scorpian (note spelling) are long dead? and anyway, Shattered Soldier made the US continuity invalid entirely, so these are just in-jokes and references?

I thought they took place in the 1980s and 90s, and 1957 was merely when Red Falcon first arrived.

SOME STILL BELIEVE! in the USA timeline and that silly Japan should stop polluting it. Yup. Well I mean, they merged the Blaster Master timelines okay didn't they?

Who in the world plays Contra for its plot?
Not me. I didn't even know there was "supposedly" a story... Btw, I am almost convinced to buy a DS just for that game. :P

Wow, music by virt, that's absolutely awesome. This is the first time I've been more interested in the soundtrack of an upcoming game than the game itself.

I started out on a Contra 4 run today, and finished the first level. I'll have to redo it though because apparently after aiming up or down and then returning to aiming forward you stop for a frame or two (only when running, not while in air). This cost me a few frames in the beginning, and I only noticed it towards the end of the level so I finished it up anyway. And I'm also thinking that the flamethrower might be faster to kill the boss with, so I'm going to try and replace the machine gun with it. But here's what the first level looks like right now. if I remember correcttly, "M" weapon was the best one for boss fight, it must be powered up to the max and hit with whole width - you can destroy one of base's cores while it's still showing up from under the earth. EDT: I am still downloading the avi to check your way of doing boss fight.

OK, a rundown of stuff. 1) You can fire the normal gun as fast as the machine gun, but an upgraded machine gun deals 2x as much damage per hit. 2) Why did you jump twice on the second wire? you didn't need to, and I believe it makes you stop for an extra frame or 2. 3) I'm fairly sure you made a mistake by not taking the rail car, that shit is FAST. you can kill the driver in a single bullet if you grapple to the top part (above where the homing powerup is) and then jump to the next one. I might be wrong, but I reckon that speed more than makes up for the grappling times. 4) You killed yourself at the boss. It looks bad. 5) When you close in on the boss, you should swap to spread, each bullet deals 1 damage, and there are 5 of them. The upgraded flamethrower deals 5 points of damage if all the parts connect and has a great rate of fire, but isn't really plausible to pickup on the first level. The crush missile is similar, but at the same time damage it deals is preset in a way, and I couldn't find a way to change it. Other than these, if you haven't already, I'd recommend playing through the game first (I just get the feeling by watching this that you haven't, my bad if I'm wrong), as it's an awesome game anyway. Keep at it either way :)

Nice! This is a good game choice because it looks impressive and is also relatively straightforward to make a TAS for. By that, I mean there are no super complicated route choices or character selections, etc. I can't really add anything more than what Atma said except I agree about the dying part. Even if it saves time, it just looks sloppy. The run should be a no-deaths run for maximum awesomeness. I wonder if the challenges should be run as well? They are basically just levels from the game, but they have twists that make them interesting. But it requires unlocking, so it would have to either come after the main run or load a saved state. (SRAM? Do DS cartridges use SRAM, or something else like flash memory? Oh well, whatever.)

I disagree, choosing a character to play as in Contra 4 is no easy task. I mean really, there's like, 9 of them!

I did not know about this, even though I have played the game many times... Well I was going to redo anyway.

It saved some frames from not having to turn around and kill the guy who was following me, I didn't find any way around this that didn't make me waste time. If it is faster to take the rail car this won't be a problem though, as I can kill him with the spread from up there.

I know and I did. If I had done it earlier though it would have been slower (if only 3 particles hit it deals damage slower than the machine gun, as it has about twice the cooldown time).

Couldn't you just manipulate the enemy not to appear in the first place?

It seems like he always appear there, and even if it did work that would probably cost time as well.

Using the Upgraded Homing missle in the corridor (behind you view) levels while ducking, can guarante killing everything and you will never get hurt, and it kills the boss extremely fast. As for enemies behind you, why not just jump in the air and do a quick shot behind you and then switch back to going forward? Also Probotector sprite is taller than the main guys, there's a video on youtube that shows it.
