This run is 4887 frames (79.78 sec) faster than Morimoto's run, which is the oldest non-obsoleted movie on this site, it's almost 4 years old.
Youkai Douchuuki is originally an arcade game, known as "Shadowland" in the US. The game has a lot of religious influences, such as lots of praying, the last level being in heaven, the fact that you can summon your own soul to fight for you, etc. The game is pretty weird as you'll find out when watching this run.

Essentials:

  • Emulator used: FCEU 0.98.16
  • Takes damage to save time.
  • Manipulates luck.
  • Aims for fastest possible time.
  • Genre: Adventure/Platform.

Improvements

The first part of the run is focuses on getting enough money to do the praying and buying the necessary items. I improved the money collecting part on a few fronts:
  • There is a dice game in the beginning of level 1, where you win money if you bet on the right character. For some reason, Morimoto bets on the wrong character the first two times, making him loose 6000 money, not saving him any time. I bet on the right character all the time, gaining me some more money.
  • I don't go out of the route on level 1 to obtain money like Morimoto does, gaining several seconds.
Other Improvements:
  • Of course, movements in general are now a lot more precise, because I have frame advance and Memory Watcher.
  • Praying has been improved a lot. When you pray, you have to press A and/or B to fill up the praying gauge. You have a timer counting down from 50, and if it reaches 0 you have failed with the prayer. While Morimoto has usually has 3 timeunits left after praying, I end my prayings with 42 units left. I gained about 20 seconds or so on the praying scenes.
  • Boss fights are faster. I found the Memory address for boss health, which was invaluable for killing bosses as fast as possible. I use the soul warrior on the bosses because he deals twice as much damage as the boy.

Memory addresses:

0062: The screen's scrolling. This value rises when the screen scrolls to the right.
00D3: Your X-position on the screen.
00D4: Your Y-position on the screen.
0110: How many bars you have on the praying gauge.
0656: Boss health. The boss dies when this reaches 0.

Thanks to:

  • Morimoto for his run.
  • A big, big thanks to Maximus for his TAS movie editor. This game is extremely edit friendly, which is really nice, since I redid parts of level 2 without having to redo the whole movie. Keep up the good work, Maximus!
That's all. Enjoy the movie!
That should be all. I hope you enjoy watching this run!

Bisqwit: Author sent a replacement movie file, updating submission. Quote from author: The reason for the ..fcm-replacement is a desync in the last level that adelikat told me about.

Randil: For the record, this updated movie is 7 frames slower than the one i submitted first. I have changed the numbers in the author's comments to fit this updated movie-file. I apoligize for the desync.

adelikat: Accepting as an improvement to the current published movie

Nice to see an update to this game. Finally I get to encode it with a better emulator, too! :)

Nice to see this movie improved :) And this is an end of an era was the last non-obsoleted morimoto movie. This problem is that I get a desync using FCEU .16 (though you said you used that one). It happens around 44360. You try to jump over that pit and fail. Your character dies and then it plays around on the title screen for the rest of the movie. The rom checksum matches up as well.

Damn, you're right. I guess it's because of all the copy-pasting that's been done. I'll fix it ASAP. I'll mail the updated version to Bisqwit when it's done. Sorry.

Well, if you are redoing anyway, there is a mistake at around frame 39100. Instead of juming and missing the ledge and jumping back up, jump sooner so you don't hit the ledge the first time. I did the highest jump I could at frame 39037 and then a long jump and the first frame possible for the next jump. It seems I was about 4 frames faster than you by doing this. I didn't try to optimize it more, perhaps more could be saved.

I don't understand the game at all - neither plot/ending nor gameplay features (except usual platformer gameplay). But at least now it's possible to fastforward through these praying scenes and stuff. So I'm voting yes because the movie became less painful to watch then it was before. :)

I fully agree. Even though its a improvement to Morimotos run, I did not find this enough entertaining to vote yes. Voted meh, sorry Randil.

Don't worry about it Angerfist, I fully understand yours and AnS' opinion. Heck, even I who made this TAS don't know what they're talking about, I just know what happens when you do the things you do. :) Perhaps it could be a good idea to add subtitles to the .avi-file when this gets published? This is of course if someone who knows japanese wants to take on this task. I'm just brainstorming here. :)

I created subtitles. But these translations still have gaps and/or inaccuracies... Could someone help? Especially the sayings of the fish / turtle in water were completely illegible to me. I have gone through and done a total retranslation. Bisqwit's work was mostly correct, and I initially only meant to edit it, but needed to reference the orginal to avoid genetic drift (the translation of a translation of a translation effect), and I think I have done a better job preserving the mood in each case. {80}{420}Youkai Douchuuki speedrun|Played by Randil|Playing time: 0:13:11.22|Rerecord count: 6270 {450}{540}This is a tool-assisted recording, played on an emulator.|For details, see http://TASvideos.org/ {1648}{1810}"Uncle! I also wish to thank Bisqwit and Upthorn for subtitles. What a weird game, anyway. Also, at 06:19—06:22 in the AVI, two subtitle captions appear for just a frame or so. I guess this is a typo of sorts? The timing appears correct in Bisqwit's subtitle timeline a few posts above.

"Welcome to the Palace of Dragon King", and "Please relax and enjoy your stay"? They are visible for about 3 seconds both for me...

Hmm, that's odd. I just checked: MPlayer, WMP 9 and VirtualDub show both of them right, but MPC shows only the first frame (then the picture remains still for about 2.5 seconds in each case). Might be an AVI splitter issue.

So, I just finished watching the Dragon King part of the movie and was struck by how odd it was. Since it was only released in Japan, you'd figure that most players would know the story of the turtle and the undersea palace, and also know to not open the box, even when the turtle pesters you to (and indeed, the expected happens if you say no and change your mind). But if you open it right away, you get a reward?! Oh...Randil, Bisqwit, Upthorn, thank you all very much for your effort.

I'm also seeing some of the subtitles flash very quickly. I'm using VLC 0.8.4a. I watched this movie twice and I slowed it down to read the subtitles. The undersea palace was the only part of the game that made a bit of sense of to me, and it turns that I didn't understand it at all. So what you're supposed to do is ride the turtle to the undersea palace, watch the girl dance, and then not open the box? How could the developers get something like that wrong?

...well, it's like this: the whole turtle, dragon palace, lady thing comes from a Japanese fable - guy gets taken by a turtle to an undersea palace, meets a princess, guy lives there for awhile, gets homesick, gets box with a warning not to open it, comes back and finds everyone he's ever known or loved is dead, opens box and -surprise!- gets turned into an old man (or a dessicated corpse) due to having actually lived underwater for hundreds of years without knowing it.

In this game, the turtle asks 6 or 7 times (I don't remember which) whether the player wants to open the box (differently worded each time). If he opens it after the second, third or the second last question, he gets punishment. If he opens it after any other question, including the first, he gets reward. If he refuses at the last time, the box remains closed and will not be seen again. Edit: And how do I know? Well I wanted to know where the leftside path under water takes, so I played... The water place is quite a difficult maze with some traps.

Brandon, do you think you could insert the subtitles in your Youtube post ? I'd be very grateful.
