Everyone seems to forget the star you have to get to beat the game. There are 121 stars in this game! ;) -- well, 122 if you include the stars given by this site :)
It has been proven that if you use a cheat to become Metal Mario then you can enter the moat door at the start of the game.
That's not true. =P You can't enter any doors while underwater, not even using the Metal Cap.
Even if we could enter doors (and GS cheats were allowed), it wouldn't do very much except lead us to the same step we're at with the Lobby Glitch, right?
Once again, what we need is a BLJ in the basement...with that, we Lobby Glitch into B1, get into the basement, use the basement BLJ to get past the 30 star door and behind the DDD painting (hopefully), and into B2. From B2, go on as normal...amirite?
EDIT: I was thinking about some of the physics in the game, and I was wondering if we could use the slope behind the blue glass in any way; for example, slide down it (maybe even try the C^ glitch), and use the speed to do something like dive and bash Mario's head against a nearby pillar and manipulate Mario so that he does his "oomph" fall at the side of the door....maybe making him go through.
Something like that, anyway.

the C^ glitch on that slope carries you about 6 feet. It may be possible somehow to use it to glitch through the nearest wall or pillar, but you'd need to start the glitch already moving at long-jump speed to have any chance. (C^ CAN get fast enough to glitch through walls, but I've never done that anywhere useful.)
You can use Z&B to stick your feet through the corner of the door (or any of the pillars, but that doesn't help at all because they aren't part of Mario. (you can't pick up coins by Z&B kicking them)
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host

Not true, Using the gameshark cheat that allows you to walk up hills

And as for the 2nd bowser cant you blj on these stairs?

I've used the superspeed cheat which is effectively like using the C^ glitch and it doesn't allow mario to get into the pillars or go through that 30 star door.

IIRC, those stares arnt useful because they arnt "stairs" but an oddly textured slope, making BLJ impossable.
I do believe that is what was said a fwe dozen pages ago.
The size of stairs doesnt matter you are able to blj on the stairs near JRB which are about the same.
Yeah, but the JRB door is close to, and almost aligned straight with the lobby stairs, while the 30-star door is far away, and perpendicular to the basement stairs. Which means even if you do manage to BLJ on the basement stairs the speed most likely would not carry you far.

Well Mario still makes the "bumpity-bump" animation when he walks up those stairs, which he doesn't do on slopes.

I think all stairs are just textured slopes, right?

Its been discussed, go back a fw dozen pages if you want.
I dont remember all that clearly why, and im too lazy to go check, but there is some reason it doesnt work.

The word "textured" is used wrong there.
Texture is the 2d map that goes on the 3d model to give it color. texture = color.
In sm64 and many other games, there are the visible models which aren't used for physics, and there are the bounding box models which are used for collision.
In an ideal TAS world, we would want to ignore the visible models and play viewing the bounding models only.
If someone could hack the video plugin to render only the collision models, it would be great. There are many missing triangles on the collision models, which is why some walls are just passable.
The wire plugin renders the outlines of the visible models only, so it doesn't help.
So there are 2 types of stairs. In order to use less calculation, they used a single plane to make mario walk on, instead of the complete stairs. You can confirm that on some stairs because if you walk slowly mario won't increase his height in steps, but he'll do it constantly.
But, even on real steps, sometimes its not possible to do BLJ because of the steps' size...
I think talking about stairs in the basement is pretty useless, since
-The stairs from the BRoD are facing the wrong direction, too high, and, as far as I know, impossible to BLJ on
-The small set of stairs near the 30 star door has been proven to be un-BLJ-able
-The two sets of stairs in the HMC room seem to have the same model as those near the 30 star door
Our best bet is still to find a wedge or invisible wall to BLJ on, I think.
Ok, I'm still not sure I understand why you bother collecting the 3rd star in JRB. the 100-coin star (second) should be enough to save the coin amount, and then you can exit course to the lobby center. I also am not sure why you got the 100-coin star in whomp's fortress, or the 100-coin star in CCM; they only slow you down. And the B1 8-red-coin star doesn't make much sense to me to collect either.
After B1, there's PSS2, TotRC, and BoB and that's it for the lobby, right?
