I wonder if anyone has tried to make a TAS of this gem from way back then. It's a puzzle game that involved the robot. Most folks grew up on Mario, I grew up on this device and didn't play mario. Anyhow, if someone managed to get their hands on a version of the rom that was like the original (press A or B on the second controller to control the pillars instead of pressing start on the first controller, then pressing A or B to cause the screen to flash and make the pillars move) then I'd like to see someone run this sucker. Squish a few Smicks for me too. =)

R.O.B. was that adorable R.obotic O.perated B.uddy that was in over 13 households in the late eighties. The idea was that he would sit next to the Nintendo and make the children feel like they had a friend. However, since he only worked with two of the stupidest games ever made, most owners of this robot buddy ignored the manual's advice and hit and/or dropped him. This was how one kid found out a serious blow to the head causes R.O.B. to vibrate uncontrollably. This malfunction was discovered to be the thing's best feature, and one of the reasons R.O.B. is considered to be the only NES accessory to be targetted at a female audience. But it didn't take too many kids with vibrating buddies on their crotches before an embarrassed Nintendo took these high precision toys off the market.

Man do I wish I hadn't traded my ROB for some crappy games when I was a kid. Would be a center stage piece for a room of doom. Anyhow, you don't need the robot to play this game, just the second controller and 2 buttons on that controller. Goofing around with it got me to lvl 20 out of 40. Then I got bored with it (again). Something about that music though. And squishing the green critters (Smicks). And squishing the professors. Can't forget the turnips either. One of my favorite tricks was to set a turnip pixel perfect under a pillar, and have a smick come eat half of it (or less) and then bring the hammer down. It wouldn't smash the poor vegetable, but would turn that green death biter into something more manageable, like a pancake or a grease spot. Give this game a whirl, the only things that sucked was that you couldn't jump, and that if you tried to play it the right way, it could have a chance at inducing seizures...

Yes, I'm serious. I'd like to see a speed-run of Gyromite's "Game A" done. Given that the game is essentially a two-player game (in the sense that it can be played without R.O.B.), I think it might be interesting. Or at least mildly amusing...

Maybe if you could explain how to play the game to me :P
I make a comic with no image files and you should read it. While there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free. -Eugene Debs

Hmm, sounds like a good idea. I'll get right on it.

If you move from a rope directly into a dropping gate, you'll go through the gate and can move an extra space in the air or zip up to the top of the gate, which lets you take a few shortcuts.

Gyromite Mode-A Controls, No-R.O.B. Version: Controller I D-Pad -- Move the Professor left or right and climb up and down ropes. Select Button -- Pause the Game Controller II (Usually held by the Robotic Operating Buddy.) B Button -- Raise red gates. A Button -- Raise blue gates. Objective Collect all the dynamite in the stage before the time runs out. The game moves horrendously slower with R.O.B. at the helm of Controller II. I never did understand what the spinning gyros were for, either...

To hold the buttons down, maybe? I've never actually seen one up close.

Okay, I have nine levels done: http://kirbymuncher.googlepages.com/Gyromite.fcm I used a glitch that lets you go through the ceiling, but if there are more that anyone knows, please tell me.

The movie pittered out at Phase 4 for me... The professor wanged one of those green dudes for some reason, then the movie sort of stopped doing anything. O_o Weird, considering the checksums line up and all... Movie looks really nice otherwise!

I wonder what the estimated frames for R.O.B.'s movements are... There is a speedrun technique in rounds 15 and 25 of Game B that involves the red pillar.

The timer seems to stop running the moment a player picks up or drops a radish. This can be seen here, pay attention to values 995 and 993. If the rightmost digit is manipulated to be low enough when the last dynamite is collected, it could save time in theory. It does save some time but not significantly.
