Well, here is my 5th installment of Super Punch-Out!! submissions. This one is a slight improvement over Phil submitted movie.
The improved time is Bald Bull, which was taken down from 0:08.62 to 0:08.24
Like the previous movies of this game, my submission aims for fastest clock time, which often conflicts with fastest real time. It aims for fastest real time as a secondary goal.
This improvement is no exception, while it is a .38 clock improvement (what would be a 15 frame improvement), the net is only 6 frames since the change in strategy has a longer "fall down" animation. Also 2 "magic" frames appeared (possibly timing differences from 1.502 to 1.51) along the way. As a result, this movie is 8 real frames faster.

Clock times

  • Gabby Jay - 06.26
  • Bear Hugger - 13.49
  • Piston Hurricane - 05.49
  • Bald Bull - 08.24 * (improved from 8.62)
  • Bob Charlie - 05.50
  • Dragon Chan - 07.30
  • Masked Muscle - 06.33
  • Mr. Sandman - 13.13
  • Aran Ryan - 08.45
  • Heiki Kagero - 10.60
  • Mad Clown - 09.05
  • Super Macho Man - 09.43
  • Narcis Prince - 08.43
  • Hoy Quarlow - 8.35
  • Rick Bruiser - 10.67
  • Nick Bruiser - 07.52

Summary

  • Uses SNES 1.51
  • Aims for fastest clock time
  • Manipulates luck

Thanks

I would like to thank Phil for continuing to look for faster strategies.

Improvements for the future

None that I know of. I tested thoroughly each strategy and only came up with this 1 improvement. Then again, so did Phil, and so did I the previous submission. The Piston Hurricane time sat at 5.5 for a long time until Phil found a rather obvious improvement that everyone had over looked. So who knows! Maybe we can continue to improve these record times...

Truncated: Accepted as an improvement to the current version.

Yeah. And if someone has a problem with that, ban AngerFist from voting, take him to jail, throw away the keys… you know the drill. ;D

Say adelikat, did you used the dizzy meter address for the new strat, or was it only trial & error? *Goes to see the run ^.^

You know I think its pretty damn impressive you found these improvements. That being said, I regard you now as one of the best tasers around. Im stunned you managed to reclaim your Super Punch Out belt :) Voted yes.

Yes, nice ONE. I am pretty happy that you respect me by using Snes9x 1.51 as I requested. For some reasons, I knew my run was improvable and that's one of the 3 reasons I didn't want to submit. But since adelikat is a bigger fan of Punch-out games and I knew he would do the job for me ;) then this movie proves me that I did the right decision. Though, it's not said that won't retry later, maybe in 2 years :P. I've still had the intuition there is one figther that can be improved but I may be wrong.

the super punch out times are spectacular and would have taken a lot of effort to do. One positive note though is Bob Charlie can be beaten in 4.98 i have done it in zsnes a few years ago and if i find my zsnes save file i will upload it. Please guys everyone who likes doing this movie i urge you all to spend a lot of time on him because it IS possible. Have done it myself. I just dont know how i did it.

Just thing of what you might have been doing and keep running through different strategies. I once posted in the Pokémon Red/Blue thread "I found a trick to walk through walls, but I forget it". Just keep looking. What was your fighting style at the time?

Neat. :) However, is it just me, or do the audio and video in the published video go more and more out of sync as time goes by?

I noticed this problem as well while watching the two hour SDW TAS. If you pause it and go back a second or two, it usually resyncs itself.

This is a problem I have with about 30-40% of the TASvideos avi-files I have. It has gotten better lately though, but some avi-files still have sound that desyncs after a short while. But as you said, it's easily fixed by rewinding a seconds or two.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. It does seem like it's getting better though.

I found a few faster clock times while browsing YouTube, uploaded and played by reportedly Swedish user MeLeeak . I know there are a lot of Swedes here, so do any of you use that alias there, or is this a future Swedish TAS:er? ;-) Andreas

This videos were apparently done on the E Version of the ROM that has apparent differences in the timing of the clock. He beats bald bull for instance at 8"19 but that is a time that isn't even possible on the U ROM. The clock goes 8"18 8"20. The stat used is identical but on the E rom the clock ticks 0"01 less, somewhere around the 8 second mark. I suspect the timing differences is the reason for the other small improvements. Mad clown and Super Macho Man have a strat change as well it seems. I'll see if those strats can work on the U version (though it is quite possible they don't). EDIT: I was incorrect about mad clown, it seems to be the same strat but timing differences. Super Macho man has 1 slight difference, a left face punch instead of a left gut punch which is 1 frame faster. While this gets him dizzy on the E rom, it doesn't on the U rom. So even the dizzy meter is effected by the timing differences. So none of these strats are usable on the U rom.

OK, thanks for verifying. I remember, there have been discussions about timing differences in the past, but I didn't want potential improvements to slip through. Andreas
