This is an "Any Percentage" completion of Mario Kart 64, to see the end credits players are required only to beat the Special Cup on 150cc and that's exactly what I do. This run began as the next step in proof-of-concept runs I'd been doing for my research work with ComicalFlop's 16 course run. I had done a Flower Cup run earlier this month and concentrated purely on strategy exploration with time and optimization as a secondary importance. As I began the Special cup I remembered that one need only beat this single cup to view the credits and be greeted by Mario saying "Hey, you're very good! See you next time" as the words "THE END" bounce across the screen. So, I figured I'd test out the TASing skills I'd been developing thanks to Comical Flop's guidance and make this cup as optimized as I could stand. I think the result is quite impressive and certainly entertaining. I developed new strategies, especially on RRd, with surprising results.

Frame 10,923
First, I use two extra frames at the beginning to choose Toad rather than Yoshi. For the record, I have no reason to believe that there is any difference between Toad, Yoshi or Peach in terms of performance and control (and the variety of characters used for WR’s over at mariokart64.com is further proof of that). However, there is a discernable difference in weight between Toad and Yoshi/Peach. The difference is very small but every bit helps for SC’s like Banshee Boardwalk. So, I chose Toad to ensure maximum hops off of cpu players.
DKJP:
I tried two very different strategies on this level but neither panned out. They were: 1. CPU hop back through the trees on the left and somehow drop down into the tunnel while triggering the regular SC. This completely failed.
2. More promising, I drove forward and cut around the trees by the water towards the waterfall. I managed to get behind those trees and my hope was that I would be able to jump down into the cave from here to speed up the first lap. Unfortunately there is a large, invisible polygon that forces a tumble and put me right into the drink no matter what I did.
So, I ended up using the typical SC strategy and just optimizing it. The very first turn is more aggressive and direct than normally attempted on a console. Please keep in mind that if you try to compare this run to the WR times, I am playing in 150cc when Time Trials is approximately equivalent to 100cc. However, I have only two mushrooms.
YV:
Now for a course where the SC brings me nowhere near an item box. With no mushrooms I was forced to get creative with the strategy. The first lap was fine, the SC is perfectly doable without an extra shroom. It’s the second and third laps that are tricky. The third lap strategy is obviously the fastest (and just barely possible without a mushroom) but when Lakitu puts you back on the track it is further forward and just far enough to make it impossible to trigger the SC (at least based on my testing). So, I came up with what you see in lap two as a way to allow three quick SC’s because this strategy places me in the right spot for lap 3. I would like to dedicate this particular trick to the late Martin McMullan who discovered the fast lap strategy that uses a similar fence bouncing technique.
BB:
First, I’d like to mention that the wall-hit early on in this level was intended to demonstrate how some corners can be used to make abrupt corners. This is especially true in Bowser Castle (not shown in this run) but it may not have been faster here. No matter, I had to wait a bit for Bowser later on anyway. For the record, manipulating cpu movement is next to impossible. Hopefully, with time, a greater understanding of how to do this can be obtained. I first performed the massive jump about 2 years ago using save-states but no slow down or re-recording. I think it is worth noting that I cannot guarantee this jump will be possible in Comical Flop’s run that Fried and I are supporting. Bowser happened to swing wide and fast and I was just barely able to get enough speed by shroom-sliding.
RRd:
I would like to thank Malcolm Young for making a video of a lap trick on this course back in 2001. He used toad to jump off of Bowser in Versus mode to trigger the strange SC. This was largely an inspiration to me to search for more interesting GP mode SC’s involving cpu jumps and items. In this course I took Malcolm’s discovery to another level and used items readily available to me from the conveniently close item boxes behind the finish line. My hope was that I could go back to those item boxes and grab two sets of triple green shells never to return. However, I was surprised to discover that it is impossible to get triple green shells in last place (a strange predicament). So, I decided to try my luck with red shells. Unfortunately, if you hit yourself with a red shell and fall off the side, you continue to tumble straight down (unlike the green shells). So, I grabbed a set of mushrooms as well (triple rather than golden, so I could use more after Lakitu brought me back). I knew that one way to protect yourself against a red shell was to jam a mushroom at the last possible and hope and, if you were lucky, your character would make a big hop rather than tumble. With TASing I didn’t have to hope, but I did have to experiment to see the cause. Turns out this occurs if you use a shroom the frame you would normally get hit the jump occurs on its own. In fact, if you press R to jump during this frame, you will get hit.
After this strange part of the first lap, I used the magic of AB-spin-shrooming to make some tight maneuvers and grab a set of triple green shells. Please note that hitting the wall at the very end was somehow “01 faster than not hitting the wall. If you watch the speedometer, it indicates that this does not slow me down but it does allow me to spend less time turning.

Truncated: Firstly, I don't like the idea of running only one cup. That would either mean that we publish every cup as a different movie, or have both a "full run" and an "any % run" which would be identical for the last cup. Neither of these is a good idea.
Secondly, some people have pointed out that this movie is badly played.
For these two reasons, this submission is rejected.

Weatherton didn't fail. the TT WR for 3 laps is 1"44"44. Weatherton got 1"29"80. He got a faster time than the real time record, but Fried is trying to point out that it can be still faster. it's a question of the precision..
No, that's not what I'm trying to point out. I'm not saying "it's cleaner than the WR but can still be faster". I'm saying "it's much worse than the TT WR." So yes, he did fail. I never said he failed to beat the TT WR, because he neither beat nor failed to beat it. You can't compare it directly because GP is different than TT, but you CAN compare the driving quality and say which one is cleaner.

I agree. Simply put, I have an eye for perfection in these kind of games, and that eye was twitching all over the place watching BB. I'm a viewer on this site, and this didn't impress me very much at all, so I voted no. Apparently 15 other people weren't impressed, and a few only slightly, and I've seen movies rejected with much, much better ratios. Oh, and, Andrew, you put TT in your post where I think you meant YV....

well, I have it all encoded, but the filesize is a little big. anyone know of any upload sites that can handle files bigger than 100 mb?

no vote. i simply can't enjoy watching someone drive in circles to trick the game into thinking you won.

If Zelda glitch runs get published... (I mean, look at Zelda: 2, LttP, LA...) My run seems to play more by the rules than these.

Here's a site with a 350 MB file size limit: http://www.f-forge.com/ I've never used this site before so I'm not sure if it's good or not. Let me know if it's a good site.

Yes vote, but only for publication as a concept demo a la F-Zero. I would much prefer a run with more variety, though; I understand the importance of fast times in racing games, but I think shortcuts like these can take all the fun out of watching. And yes, the run did seem a bit sloppy, but given how hard it apparently is to optimize and the fact that the 100% run is still far from completion, I think this run should be accepted.

PS FOR THOSE HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE VIDEO. As I mentioned in the post, for some reason it doesn't seem to play well in VLC player but plays fine in WMP (at least for me). I'm sorry if it doesn't work for you, I could try other settings.
I had sound probolems (they started after crossing the finishing line the first time.) It did not spoil my enjoyment of the run...It was good. I am not sure what SC means (I think Saving Catch...) could someone tell me?

Actually, I was referring to "Short Cut." Very sorry for not defining this, years in the Mario Kart community make me neglect/forget to spell things out. Other key mk64 lingo: mt: mini turbo ssmt: straight-stretch mini turbo ... many others, I think there is a list somewhere on the mariokart64.com site...

This game needs a "Full Amazing Run" where you continually zoom around the entire course at relatively fast speeds, demonstrate crazy physics and glitches the entire way, and still end up in first place :P I liked this movie for its "viral" quality. Shrink it down and upload it to youtube!

I think it'd be intresting to see how you would do DKJ, YV, and RR if it weren't for those go in circles shortcuts. Or just a demostration what other tricks are possible on those levels. For RR why not get 3 greens first and just use that or 3 greens then 3 shrooms and just use that? Then you wouldn't have to back track to the items a second time, saving over 5 seconds, no?

you (and everyone saying "I hate the lap glitches") would be very interested in the NON-shortcut time trial vids. Any video listed here without 'sc' is a course played "the way it was intended". Some faster vids, again using the same "no sc in title" can be found at www.wrvids.com. as weatherton explained in the submission text, he could not manipulate 3 triple green shells in 8th place.

But that's no SC, I want to see all the SCs, including the more interesting ones, not just one boring SC (which looks more like a glitch that makes little sense to a casual viewer) or no SCs at all.

ok then. watch the shortcut vids where available, but do not watch frappe snowland, wario stadium, donkey kong jungle parkway, or yoshi valley. all other 12 courses are fair game though, pertaining to your desires.

Is it possible to describe the goal/requirement for that? Maybe "Does not use Lakitu." Of course, DKJP still does does not break that rule... (and is a course with very interesting alternate short cuts). How would you phrase the requirments/rules to forbid this but allow the other SC's in the level?

i don't think those runs should be published either. (the question was whether i enjoyed watching the movie, but yeah, i don't think it should be published either.)

You could classify it as no shortcuts which skip 90% of the track, or no shortcuts which aren't obviously clear without knowledge of programming on what you are skipping and why the game thinks you’re skipping it. Or you could specifically ban certain shortcuts.

Considering there was almost a civil war here about whether a run without swastikas should obsolete a movie with swastikas, I can't image trying to get anyone to agree on something that's so arbitrary and subjective.

How about a "no damage" classification? That can be defined unambiguously and would certainly make for a different run, probably different enough to exist separately like 100% runs do.

I read all of page 1, and I hope you'll forgive me for skipping to page 5. I was definitely shocked that D.K's Jungle Parkway could be beaten that way, but now that I know, seeing it done in every level does seem a bit boring. So it's very surprising, but not very entertaining. Banshee Boardwalk was awesome because it was actually a race. All that high speed driving and high precision turning was a blast. Yeehaw! Plus, there was a trick that could only be performed on one lap, so the races won't just be the same thing three times in a row. What did I think of this run? It was too short. Seeing just one cup makes me want to see the whole game so much more than I did before. Taken as a whole, with a mix of shocking - but repetitive - 30 second races, and high speed, eye popping complete races, a 100% run of this game will kick more ass than a Nike warehouse... filled with magical shoes... that are kicking a bunch of people who are visiting the warehouse in the ass. Okay, that simile got away from me. Now, comicalflop has a valid concern. A year is a long time to spend on a run. We all remember how long FODA spent on his 100% Mario 64 run. The level of optimization is getting higher, but the games are getting longer, and optimization is more difficult in 3D games. We're at the point that a substantial investment in time is necessary to produce anything that will get a Yes vote. I hesitate to mention this because I like the fact that TASing is still a community of amateurs who work together to make amazing things. Nevertheless, I've been thinking that maybe these movies are so time consuming to make that we should think about compensating the authors. I'm not talking about prizes, which would generate competition and result in a breakdown in the sharing of ideas. Nobody wants commercialization. What I'm saying is, I want to see comicalflop's 100% run. I'm so convinced that others do, too, that I think we could take up a collection to make it worth his time. I know that money can't bring back the feeling that you would have gotten from showing the world an awesome movie that would be completely surprising, but you can still show us three cups that we haven't already seen, produce one of the seminal works of TASing (Yes, seminal. You'll be the first to do a 100% run, so it will still be the basis for all that will follow), and create something that will make a lot of people happy. And, if it helps, I'm sure we could give you something for the time you'll have to invest in it. That's all I have to say. This movie rocked, and I'll be waiting all year for the sequel. This gets a Yes vote.

The DKJP SC can be done "without damage" as in, you can land with zero tumble (but then in takes longer to turn around). In fact, the regular NON-SC WR takes damage once per lap when getting hit by a coconut rock thing. As for ComicalFlop's run, I think (as I mentioned earlier) that people should avoid calling it the "100%" run. "All Cups" run or something to that effect seems more accurate, the goal would be to get 4 out of the game's 16 trophies (I would assume gold but who knows) on 4 different cups. Not sure if you'd have to specify 150cc since I doubt a slower setting would ever be faster (changes like the loss of the fence on CM don't exactly slow you down). By the way, I can't remember for sure (but Gamefaqs supports what I thought), but the title screen doesn't change until you have golds on all cups on each speed setting, which also opens Extra.

Good enough for me voting "Yes".
