Yeah, all the metroid games are now getting the attention they deserve. So today I was bored and I manage to escape the Giant Metroid in real time (but with save states) without the speed booster. Of course it ended up taking more time than it would have to simply get drained by the metroid. In a console speed run you have the risk of exiting with the metroid attached, so this trick is basically useless to everyone. movie, for those who are curious

Damn you! %) I was planning to do this when I wanted to take the Ice route in low%. I knew it was possible.

hahaha, sorry to spoil your surprise moozooh. Since you are using the speed booster route anyway, it doesn't really matter too much. I assume that most experts and console runners knew this was possible, but like I said it is totally impractical to use this in a console run.

This was known. Before discovering the shortest charge through which the shinespark variant is only possible, I planned to use the non shinespark method in the RBO as well first. And even without shinespark, it's still definitely faster than letting the Metroid grabbing you. You just have to dodge him more precisely. Here a proof-movie (created in a couple of minutes, so it's still not optimized to the max.)

nice video saturn, that surely is faster than letting it grab samus. Is there a reason why the console runners don't do this?

1) Too hard to do it; 2) too hard to do it fast; 2) too risky to place it at the end of a hard segment (the final segment will most likely contain Ridley fight as well as other things), and if using an additional save point, it'll hardly save some time (though it might be a good idea for someone who can pull it off consistently without wasting more time than it saves).

Yes, it indeed saves some frames and JXQ is aware of that trick. :) Besides, Saturn has already shown it in one of his teasers.

Someone should use the end sequence trigger glitch I *may have* discovered several months ago, even if it's just a concept run >_> EDIT// It would be pretty funny, at least.

The quick ending trigger sequence involving the usage of all the beams is well known by many people now, I knew about it a couple years ago after someone posted about it on m2k2. I agree this would make for a great concept run except that Snes9x does not emulate Super Metroid correctly in this one regard, it can be done on zsnes if I recall correctly.

I don't know how interesting a run that uses the space-time beam would be, since I imagine that the route would be similar to the any%, up until after Draygon (unless one gets the plasma without beating Draygon; I have no clue how quick that abuse of the X-Ray Scope is).

Oh, hmm. Thanks for clearing that up. I posted about it a while ago but no one said anything about it having been known about, at least not in a way that made me believe they were talking about the same thing I was >_>. It would differ from normal any% runs because you wouldn't need to gather half the amount of items that you do in a normal run. I guess it's just me, but I think it would be very interesting to see samus make the planet explode without killing ridley/motherbrain and leaving the planet in (edit:)well under 20 minutes...

It is indeed possible that just fighting Draygon as usual might be even faster than getting that thing with the x-ray scope. Climbing up the walls with it takes AGES compared to a fast paced TAS.

thanks evilchen, but P.JBoy is correct. I realized that Samus can walljump off the center pillar shortly after my run was published. Samus can walljump without losing momentum in certain situations. This area will constitute the biggest improvements to my current any% run, because I no longer have to bomb across the lake when going towards wrecked ship. Thanks again for the idea though.

I would especially recommend the mind blowing megamix called Crystal Flash: http://virt.vgmix.com/music/arrange/virt_-_super_metroid_-_crystal_flash.mp3 It's a 22 min long one in a very high instrumental quality in the Metal style, extremely good composed and mixed. I have heared many Metroid mixes, but this one is by far the best IMO. Don't miss it!

I had this idea, but it's probably impossible... Well, at least I couldn't do it any chance. Maybe just a bit more speed would do it though, but no place to get that speed from if I'm correct.
