Yet another improvement to my NES marble madness movie. This is the 5th version (3rd submitted). This one is a 64 frame improvement over the current published run.
The improvements come from staying off screen more. I was able to optimize this using memory watch to monitor the position & speed of the marble.
This game has a 16 frame rule. I improved levels 2 and 3 by 16 frames by overcoming this frame rule. In reality they were improved by less (3 in lv2, 9 in lv3). Also, I improved level 5 by 32 frames (overcoming the frame rule twice).
I believe this run to be un-improvable due to this frame rule. While there might be a possibility that you could squeeze a frame or two in a level, not enough to overcome the next frame rule.

Summary

  • Aims for fastest completion
  • Manipulates luck (to NOT get the "wands")
  • Uses FCEU .16
  • PERFECT ;)

Hi Phil is that you. Just kidding, haven't watched it yet but I'm sure its very close to perfection. EDIT: I agree with Moozooh that the comment made at the end was entirely uncessary.

Adelikat, some of your movies are really crazy and funny. This is one of them. By the way, are you planning to do the same memory watch treatment to the Genesis version?

While noticing that you left your second controller on for this TAS, I wondered if a second player would add anything to this game. I don't think it'd do much, but maybe I'm missing something.

Very nice. I was worried the marble would be off-screen too much after seeing the first level and degenerate the run into a fly-over of the stages, but it turned out quite entertaining. I'm not too clear on what the 16-frame rule is, though. Do you mean that the game works in units of 16 frames and you have to beat a level by enough frames to degenerate to a lower multiple of sixteen (ex. a level run of 518 frames would have to be improved to be below 512) for the game to actually recognize it meaningfully? Anyway, yes vote.

Exactly :) JXQ, I considered doing a 2 player version, but I don't think it would add much and would be considerably longer. I thought maybe I could create some shortcuts by having the marbles smack into each other, but I couldn't get anything gong with that idea.

Very nice run. I like seeing games that were impossible as a kid beaten so quickly. I liked that trick at the top of the silly race near the goal, it looked very smooth. I have a question though, why was the second player's controller used, does it make the marble go faster? Yes vote

controller 2's input is there unintentionaly due to making this run while also working on 2 player runs. It has no affect on the game.

Well, aside from being very very fast it's also an improvement, so no question there.

From what I gather, it works more or less like this: The game only checks once every 16 frames to see if a marble has entered the goal. If the marble is 1 frame late, there would be a 15 frame delay before the level ends. But this also means that if you get to the goal 15 frames earlier, there will be no change in the total length of the run. Whereas if you get there 16 frames earlier, the total run length will be about a quarter second shorter.
How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.

Voting yes because it improves the existing run. Great work on that :)

What says you can't just whack them off the ledges for good fun? :) Seeing them fight to the death while still winning in record time would be interesting.

Agreed. Claiming "perfection" in the TAS world means you have given up on achieving perfection... I vote meh.
