yup, the third is from young merlin(not very well known), and the fourth is jeff's theme in maniac mansion. In the ducktales one, the first 12 seconds or whatever before it picks up are out of sync with the game's music, and I just can't figure it out. I count it in the game and there are 15 beats(rather than 16 when it does pick up), but my version is just off. don't know why.

Nightcom: Geez, that's what I call a MP3 arcive. And I strongly recomend www.Zophar.net if you search for the original versions of musig for Genesis, Nes or Snes. They got almost everything.

Anyone interested in downloading large collections of NES and SNES (and even other types of game music not often discussed here, such as C64 music) should have a look at what's available on the P2P networks. I've found a lot on the E2DK network. Try searching for "goodspc" or "tosec nsf".

Everyone recommends Zophar for emu music. I partly agree, but if I were you, I wouldn't touch Zophars SPC archive. Sure, it's HUGE, but the archive is a mess. Most of the files are taggless and timeless, and too many of the packs are incomplete one way or another. For properly ripped, tagged and timed complete packs, http://www.snesmusic.org/spcsets/ is the place to go. It only has musics from 501 snes games though. But I prefer quality over quantity anyway. I might also add that I have tagged and timed couple of more recent psf releases :) Hooray.

They are in rsn format so you need some special player to listen to them.
I know I'm a bit late with this, BUT :) rsn is actually a regular rar pack. If one so wishes, all the rsns can be unpacked. Files in snesmusic.org are also in rsn packs.

Whats kinda wierd is that all the original tracks are REALLY long. I am talking like 400-600 min sometimes!!! Thats pretty crazy... When you export them you can clip them though.
The original files don't really have a lenght. They loop endlessly unless specified otherwise. SPC files have that information in tags(and so does every other emu format that I can think of right now), and by default every player/plugin I have used uses these times, unless you are using a player/plugin that dates pre-stoneage :) Just felt like adding some :) And this is the vgm list (only OSTs, not the meu stuff) I currently have on my HD. Not all of my junk though, been too lazy to transfer backed up stuff back in after getting a bigger HD :) http://personal.inet.fi/musiikki/mika/TheList.txt

My favorites are Akumajou Densetsu (the non-VRC6 version, USA Castlevania 3 is also very good) Castlevania 4 Dracula X/Rondo of Blood Doom 1&2 (Bobby Prince rocks!) Duke Nukem II (even better Prince work than the Doom games) Final Fantasy 3j Final Fantasy 4 Final Fantasy 6 Final Fantasy 7 Lagrange Point (uses another Konami-made music chip, VRC7, to make the NES sound essentially 16-bit) Quake (got to love Nine Inch Nails) Xenogears (even though I've never played it...love the Shevat song)

I own several soundtracks. I also have probably around 20gigs (maybe more?) of soundtracks in mp3s. Not to mention huge nsf, psf, spc and sid collection. Gyms suck, so I don't have them. And I don't mean that gym music sucks, but the format sucks. It doesn't sound anything like the original Genesis music.
Then you just have the wrong .gym Player. On my Meridian Advance most Soundtracks sounds just like the original, and yes, I still have a megadrive and know how the music sounds.

you certainly should play it. It's great. In my opinion one of the best games Squaresoft ever made. Oh. And from the same composer as Xenogears is the music in Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Both very good too. Philip

While I did know about Xenosaga, I did not about the other games. Thanks. I have a question though: Which is his first name? It seems to me that it's usual in japanese to first list the last name (family name), then the first name and I have read his name both ways around, so what is it? This question is also the reason why I have not named him in my previous posting. I did not want to make an embarassing mistake with all those japanese speaking people around here ;-) Philip

Yasunori is his given name. He prefers to write it in Western order. http://www.procyon-studio.com/profile/profile.html

But yeah, the music in video games is just great in a lot of cases. Example (I don't personally know much about it) Final Fantasy must be incredibly good because they often have full on orchestrial concerts of it. The first one in the new Disney concert hall in the LA area sold out before it was even in the box office (online preorder). I've never played any final fantasy game, but thats impressive enough.
It always scares me whenever anybody has this kind of an attitude about anything. Unless you think Top 40 is the best music available and LOTR movies ought to comprise 3 out of the top 10 movies ever made, according to IMDB votes. And I could go on. Sidenote: in this week's Time the cover story was an awful piece on the Xbox 360 and VG history in general. They had the same old tired VG timeline in a segment, but it was interesting that under 2005, they had a FF concert as the most recent achievement of VGs, so it seems at least one other person is duly impressed. Although the timeline maker should get his/her facts straight about this "milestone."

ocremix.org is my favorite because they have the remixes, and they also have the originals. The originals is really what I am after. They are awesome.
I personally can't stand the remixes on OC Remix. The signal to noise ratio is completely horrendous. If I want to hear remixes, that's what an arrange album is for. NSFs, SPCs, PSFs, etc are a godsend because it always used to suck back in the day trying to find decent MIDIs or MODs where the poor arranger wasn't mistranscribing random notes all over the place.

I have a theme song, and yes it rocks! Although I like the forest music slightly better. But Forest Music would be a bad handle, I think.

As long as you don't share this guy's opinion [RPGamer is currently down, so no linkage, but someone who works with the site seriously says in his bio that he considers the FF6 soundtrack to be THE greatest musical accomplishment of the entire 20th century], which quite frankly is the #1 craziest thing I have EVER heard about... anything.

What? I love midi files! They're so small.
I've taken several music technology classes, and I have to say, the love/hate relationship musicians have with the MIDI specification is quite amusing. I personally think it ought to be scrapped/updated (it dates back to 1983!), since the lack of timbre control is pretty much unacceptable. As Boco alluded to, MIDI files are small because they are just instructions. To put it another way, mid is to (mp3, flac, etc) as (smv, zmv, etc) is to avi. And like Boco said, modules, which were more prevalent back in the early 90s, are the way to go because they actually store samples.

IMHO Xenogears functions much better as a soundtrack than an actual game. In fact, the soundtrack also even functions much better than the music does while playing the game. This is because the weakest tracks are the battle themes, which you will be hearing a lot, and the balancing is very off, meaning some tracks are extremely overplayed. One of the only games that doesn't sound better while playing IMHO. Now time for me to give a couple of suggestions. My favorite VG composer is Motoi Sakuraba (Tales, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Baten Kaitos, Golden Sun, some Shining games, Mario Tennis/Golf, old Wolf Team games). Tales of Phantasia SPC and Valkyrie Profile PSF are good introductions you can get easily. On ed2k, the Star Ocean & Valkyrie Profile live concert you can get relatively easily, is mind-blowing. Especially if you can get the DVD video. I also like Hitoshi Sakimoto (Ogre Battle series, FF Tactics, Breath of Fire 5, Vagrant Story, upcoming FF12, other random stuff you wouldn't think of like DW6, Radiant Silvergun, Legend of Legaia 2, Gradius 5). Although I most like the first three in that list I mentioned. There's also Noriyuki Idaware (Radiata Stories, Lunar, Langrisser, Grandia, Growlanser). He doesn't do as much as other composers maybe, but it is all solid. And Mitsuda, who has already been mentioned. I might compare these guy's styles but I've written too much already.
