Zelda 2 glitched run. Again. The only difference between this run and the one I submitted earlier today is a hexed in overworld.
To get overworld 2 to work I first had 6 shots of rye so I'd forget what I did well enough to try different things. I walked on some swamp at the start to waste some time (so I wouldn't have to walk back and forth or pause 3 times for 10+ frames). This also wound up being a faster strategy so there was less waiting involved. I eventually had to waste some time in the forest and later on in the swamp so it took the same number of frames overall to get through the overworld. But the waiting is spaced out a lot better.
Compared to the submission that I canceled a week ago, I fixed one of the last rooms, and tightened the Dark Link fight. I also hexed in a better looking overworld 1.
I lost 1 frame thanks to the timing of Dark Link between this version and the last. The final hit is still delivered on the same frame, I just had to end the movie a bit later.
If you guys hadn't called me on it, I wouldn't have fixed the overworlds. So thanks.

Old submission text:
Here's an improved version of the Zelda 2 'glitched' run. I would describe the process of making this movie as 'tedious'. I tried pretty much everything I could think of in pretty much every room to get Link's movement just right. Hopefully it's as good as possible.
First off, I started this run because I noticed a few small things in the published movie. I decided to take a closer look, and the small things kept adding up.
I didn't want to make Gigafrost's run plus small improvements, but all of my ideas for route changes didn't work out, so that's kind of how it is.
So yeah, big ups to Gigafrost for all of his work and advice. There is no way on earth I would have figured out how to get through the great palace on my own. By extension, ups to Blitzag & Genisto for their initial work.
I still do not fully understand the healer glitch. As soon as I think I get what it's doing, it does something completely unexpected somewhere else. This is primarily why none of my route ideas worked.
On to the improvements: From the start of the game through the end of the jump cave, 50 frames are saved over the published run. Most of that (I've lost my earliest notes) are from a better overworld getting the trophy, and using jump in the cave. 2 frames are gained from exiting the palace to the left, and one or two frames are gained in a few other places from better movement.
Because of the change in timing of the two runs, the overworld between the jump cave and palace 2 was a nightmare. It seems like I worked on this sequence forever. I wound up losing 13 frames against the published run and I happen to think that's pretty good considering how unfriendly it was.
I gain 30 frames in palace 2. 10 frames are from passing through the first door better. 20 frames are from using a key on the second door. A few frames are lost getting the key and a few frames are gained from better movement.
Nothing much happens until I use jump to get downstab. I get to the door 8 frames faster, make the teacher appear 10 frames faster, and gain a few frames here and there from better movement.
From the start of the hammer run to getting the hammer, 5 frames are saved from small optimizations in various caves. 35 frames are gained by dying faster. It is possible to get the hammer a bit quicker, but the axe isn't as convenient and the 35 frames are lost.
The great palace was a lot more complicated to make than it looked from the start. My notes are literally just a list of room numbers and frame counts for this level (made sense as I was playing, but useless now). 73 frames are saved overall from optimizations throughout the palace and 10 frames are saved on Shadow Link.
copypasta:
  • Uses death as shortcut
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Uses a game restart sequence
  • Abuses programming errors in the game
  • Manipulates luck
  • Genre: Adventure
I'll be happy to answer any questions the best I can. Enjoy the run.

Truncated: Accepted as an improvement to the current glitch run.
Bisqwit: Taking for processing.

It had only been 47 minutes (since this post was made) ... so of course there's few comments. It was submitted rather early for US-ers too (00:00-03:00, depending)

I still have no idea what's going on, but it's definitely entertaining enough to get a yes from me :)

So wait, are you saying we should take down the already published movie now just because people can't understand it?

I downloaded the non-glitched run, and found it a bit boring, but I refrained from voting because it was already published. I told myself, I needed to give this movie a chance. I saw it, and giggled like a little schoolgirl. A yes vote.

Jesus christ! How did you even plan those routes? This is incredible. I thought the old glitched run was fast, but... wow. Amazing, double plus yes vote.

Nonsense. Glitched TASes are, simply put, the meaning of life. Yes vote again.

No, I'm saying I don't like this one. That's all I'm saying.

Please remember that the text reads Did you like this movie?, not Should this movie be published?. He did not enjoy the movie and so his vote is no. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I can definitely understand where he's coming from (no sense is being made in this movie).

It's sometimes easy to forget that in this community, especially when the rule of thumb is that the more a movie makes you go "WTF" the more publish-worthy it is.

That's not really all you're saying. You knew before watching this run that it was heavily glitched. It is no doubt correct to say you knew enough about it to be able to determine that you wouldn't like watching it even before you watched it, no matter how completely the author fulfilled his stated goals or how well he played. Why do you even bother downloading and watching movies you know you won't like? That was a rhetorical question, of course, as everyone already knows the answer.

That depends. I was under the impression that this site was still based off of entertainment, in which case true publication qualifications would be if it is an entertaining movie. Some people do not find glitchy movies entertaining and prefer full-game runs (like the full version of this game's movie). Therefore, these movies are not entertaining to them.

In this case, if I don't like boring sports games, I should simply not watch on them and vote? That's like saying that if you know a particular game is horribly boring you should not watch it at all instead of attempting to watch and deciding that you do not like it after all (and voting no). If that was the case, a movie like Front Line would have one yes vote and no other votes because no one would watch it (because Front Line is boring), even if it beat the game in only a few seconds. I can go on but I believe I've already proven my point.

He only has a few choices here:
  • Know he won't like it, avoid voting, never have his opinion heard.
  • Know he won't like it, vote no, break the rules for voting without watching.
  • Know he won't like it, watch the movie to make sure he doesn't, vote no, have his opinion heard.
  • Know he won't like it, watch it, be cleverly amused, vote yes.
That being said, he probably chose the best course of action. That is, vote after watching, giving his opinion of whether he liked it or not. I can't really find any fault there.

Someone's opinon differs from the majority. It's an imagined fault created by people forgetting what this site was based on. Oh well... PS Zurreco:

His fault is not that his opinion differs from the majority. There is a moral fault here, though it is a subtle one. Perhaps because most of you are young and opinionated and probably not very empathic you fail to notice it. But, for example, because I'm actually a nice guy, I don't download movies I know I'm not interested in and just vote no after not being entertained. After all, this voting process is not supposed to be democratic. All it really serves to do is highlight unexpectedly good runs for relatively unknown games that otherwise no one would pay attention to, like Gimmick. A shitty run is not going to be published even with a million affirmative votes, and a great run is not going to be neglected even with a million negative votes. NecroVMX doesn't actually contribute anything positive to any discussion when he forcibly injects his assholery into the equation. His opinion is truly, actually, and objectively moot. So I don't really see why he has to be an asshole about it.

Judging from the way the site works (and how akward it is to find "truly good" rated submissions), I disagree. Many times judges wait or request for more input from the community. A movie with 78 "Yes" votes is treated as equal to a movie with 13 "Yes" votes (generally), and given very little special attention minus maybe getting encoded first, based on what I've seen here. Although perhaps I am wrong and you are right, but I was always under the impression that it was the community who assisted the judges in making the final decision.

Just because the judges ask for other opinions on occasion does not mean they find the voting meaningful, or that they hold all opinions to be equal.

That's actually what I do, I never really understood why people waste time watching a movie they're predisposed to dislike. EDIT: oh yeah, and to those who say "so they can vote no" then I don't see how the movie being published or not published affects you in any way, it's still a chunk of your life wasted.

Well, consider that this game already has both a glitch run and a non-glitch run published. So if people vote No to an improvement of the glitch run just because it uses glitches, then what it really means is that they want the glitch run category removed for the game. Right? Doesn't that make sense?
