How can people see the small mistakes he made as proof of the video being real? As someone already said, if someone was to send a TAS to SDA, he would most probably leave in mistakes to make it beliaveable. No one would be stupid enough to just send in a run with absolutely no mistakes. Same goes for the arm pumping.
Exactly. these small mistakes don't prove the video being real. But if I were the man who send a TAS to SDA, I would'nt have choosed the slowest Phantoon attacks(3 times!). If so, I would have choosed rather normal pattern, and cut down some crazy & unbelievable tricks peformed in his movie to make my movie believable. BTW, hotarubi is now answering many many questions of NINTENDON! community members (including me). Then, some new facts appear. Here are some of them. Whether you doubt his run real or not, you may have fun. :) --------------------------------------------------- Q. about arm pumping dash? A. I used it carefully. At the begining of every slops, I stopped pushing L & R button. Q. Why did you save animals? It seems unbeliable. A. At that time, I had already recorded another 32. So I managed to challenge 31 or 32 + save animals. Q. Why did you know this run would'nt get 31? A. If you have many tries using same route and same strategy, you can easily estimate rough clear time. (catnap222' note: it seems that he doesn't use real time clock. and another real player Sippu, who achieved segmented run in 35min in 2004, is comprehensible at hotarubi's word. Sippu also can estimate rough clear time. It seems that every real player can estimate rough clear time.) Q. How about the possibility of 31? Please estimate. A. mabye 3%. Q. Why did you play so funny at the top room of Wreched Ship? A. I was very paniced... I didn't think about that failure at all because I haven't ever missed that trick. Q. What is the hardest part? A. Double kago ball at Lower Norfair. I was luckey. Q. What are the sub-hardest parts? A. torizo fight(?), missile recovery at Creteria Energy Tank, shine spark toward Wrecked Ship, Botoon fight. -------------------------------------------------------- These are rough translation. If you want to read his raw comments, please go to NINTENDON! BBS (but all of comments are in Japanese :P)

new comments arrives. enjoy. ;) ------------------------------- Q. What controller you use? A. Normal one attached to Super Nintendo. Q. What controller settings you use? A. Y: shot, B: jump, X: item cancel, A: dash. others are normal. You can see bit in the item get message. (ex. speed booster) Q. Missile recovery at Crateria Energy Tank is unbelievable! A. Not so difficult. I always do like this even if I have 5 missiles. (catnap222' note: I have heard that he always kill green pirates with missile and recover missile from green crab in Brinsta. I don't know why (mabye advantage for time or more damage boosts after that), but this strategy needs that Samus must be full energy at the begining of Brinsta. It seems that he always kill two flying enemies in order to take no damage.) Q. Damage boost at ceres is amazing! A. I use falling tile, not steam. So required position is visible. Q. Why did you stop boost dash at the big Crateria room near WS? A. I accidentally released L button. So I losed ground surface grip. Q. Any other sub-hardest part? It seems there are many difficult points like boost mock ball in Lower Norfair, shine spark before gravity suit, boost spacejump and mock ball at Brinsta gate, etc... A. These are no so difficult. (catnap222' note: He seems "Super Short Charge" master!) Q. Please tell the TIPS of shine spark toward WS. A. Before entering the door, you have to dash so that it add enough speed to the charged beam. Then, auto fire the charged beam in the next room. Wait until the charged beam become out of screen. And it is time to start shine spark. Charged beam is easier than super missile because charged beam has longer width and doesn't lose itself so easily. --------------------------------

Here are his latest comments. ------------------------------- Q. During the trial term, how many time did you get finished ? A. about 20 times. Q. how many time did you reset the game to go to next try? A. I don't remember, but guess it's about 600 times. Q. Did you consider to reset the game until you were recording this movie? A. Yes. I wanted to quit this try at Wrecked Ship and Maridia because of some mistakes. Q. How do you hold your controller? A. like this. (catnap222's comment: CRAZY... LOL) Q. What is your next run? A. mabye 100% single-segment in 52. -------------------------------------- The more I hear his comment, the more I'm supprised.... I can't wait his next movie. ;)

I believe this is the Speed Run Equivilent of the 4 minute mile. it is seemingly impossibe but someone did it eventually. If you place the controller on your leg the controller position does not seem so bad...(tryed with my GC controller so not as good as the real thing.)

over 2000 people have officially achieved the 4 minute mile (and many more unofficially) but only one has beaten SM in 32 min I don't see 2000 people beating SM in 32 min anytime soon.

With the small difference that milions are running every day and the sport (and possibility) existed as long as mankind. Metroid on the other hand...

laughing_gas, I would think that Shaded Spriter was referring to comparison on a proportional scale, not an absolute scale.

I was using it as an analagy of doing something people think is impossible. In 1954 people didn't think it was possible to run the 4 minute mile untill someone did it (and it was 3:59.4 when they did it.) People thought that this was impossible to do SM under 35 min (none-tas) before someone done it.

Also, apparantly that record was broken within a week by somebody else, so I think we're missing out on a big single segment greenpeace 31 run here guys... ;)

50 years after the 4 minute mile is broken, 2000 people can achieve it. 50 years after SM is beaten in 32 min, 1 person can achieve it.

laughing_gas, please do the following: 1) Look up what proportional means 2) Stop making asinine posts The board thanks you for it. Oh, and I'm referring to your post that is three posts above this one, in case your attention span exploded again.

I know very well what proportional means. He implies that at least 20 people would achieve 32 min in the next 50 years

PROPORTIONAL means that we are comparing percentages of things in relation to their size relative to EACH OTHER. To address the ridiculousness that you are bringing actual numbers into this in order to bitch your heart out, since it was just a general statement you decided to set a vendetta against, let's compare what you've said.

Using proportions, this means that you think there are 2000 times as many people that run competitively than play Super Metroid competitively. Source?

Either you're using proportions, and think that Shaded Spriter somehow implied that there are only 100 times as many people that run competitively than play Super Metroid competitively, or you don't know what the hell a proportion really is. Let's assume the first case. Source? OH THERE IS NONE SINCE HE DIDN'T FUCKING SAY THAT. And what makes you think others won't be able to get 32 minute times? Because it hasn't been done before? Hmm, what does that remind me of...oh yes, RUNNING A FOUR MINUTE MILE. Suddenly the real reason for the analogy clicks, at least I hope it does, and you stop your whiny pointless criticisms of other people's comparisons.

You really need to remove your router from your home. Debate End GO! -4 minute mile was once thought to be impossible. This was eventually done, though. -Sub32 SM run was once thought to be impossible. This was also eventually done. -At no point was the claim made that only a certain amount of people would be able to complete either of these tasks within any given time frame. Conclusion: Shaded Spriter's comment stands, laughing_gas' comment was useless.
