• Difficulty : Normal()
  • Emulator : BizHawk 1.11.8.2
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Uses death to save time
() Hard difficulty only lowers the amount of time you have to finish each level, this is useless and because of the transiton it would make me loose a lot of time
This is an improvement of my previous rejected movie of 12860 frames mainly by more optimization and new skip found.

The Game:

Asterix and the Great Rescue is most likely the hardest Asterix game. You can use either Asterix or Obelix, but I chose almost exclusively Asterix. Gameplay mechanics :

Items:

Various potions for various uses
  • Gold: Useless in any%
  • Sickle: Grants invulnerability for some seconds
  • Bomb: Grants invulnerability, increase speed for some seconds
  • Heart: Gives an extra life
  • Chicken: Gives 2 life points
  • Chalice: Restores all life points
  • Magic potion (Asterix) or boar (Obelix) : Ends the level
Main issues of the game: You can't turn around immediately because of the animation. You don't get any life points back between levels and life recovery items are rare.

Level by level comments :

Gaulish Village:

  • 2:
    • I didn't take the potion at the left and turned to the right at the beginning, costs some life points but saves time.
  • 3:
    • I took the chicken to restore some life points.
  • 4:
    • I took Obelix because his bigger hitbox allows me to take the boar without getting on the ship.
  • 5:
    • Intentionnal death to take back all my life points
    • I saved 2 seconds by going through the background instead of going back on the platform
    • I skipped a little part of the level thanks to a frame perfect jump on the elevator
  • 7:
    • Duplicate the clouds.
    • First big zip on the wall, 1 minute save here. Normally, You can clip into the wall by placing yourself in the closest pixel to the edge of the cloud. I didn't succeed doing that here. The only way to clip in the roof when you can't place on this exact pixel is to wait for the cloud to dissapear.
    • I didn't take the flying potion, this allowed me to skip the part where you take it.
  • 8:
    • Intentionnal death
    • I didn't take the flying potion, this allowed me to skip the part where you take it.
    • Little zip on the door, a few frames saved.
    • Glitched texture, I don't know why x)
  • BOSS: When throwing a fish, Asterix doesn't move with the carrier, so you can't throw more than 6 fishs every time

Roman Encampment:

  • 1:
    • Death abuse.
    • Thanks to the damage taken I didn't go flying over the barrier, this allows me to skip a good portion of the level.
    • This little barrier need two shots, by using a cloud, we can save a few frames.
  • 3:
    • I skipped the last part of the level with clouds.
  • 4:
    • I skipped a part of the level with a cloud.
  • 6:
    • Little skip with the cloud.
    • Little zip with the cloud on the roof.
  • 8:
    • The cloud position and the jumps were very hard because the spikes have weird hitboxes.
  • BOSS: I managed to hit every single rock.

The Forest:

  • 2:
    • By saving my bomb potion I didn't have to get other bombs which were a little bit out of the way.
  • 6:
    • I duplicated the cloud potion to skip a small part of the level.
  • 7:
    • Very cool zip which saves a lot of time.
  • BOSS: You must alternate between A and B as fast as possible to beat the boss, and this is a TAS.

Germany:

  • 2:
    • The eagles were hard to optimise.
    • I took a damage to use the flying potion later.
  • 3:
    • Some clips are possible on the sausages.
    • I finished very quickly the level by skipping directly to the end with a cloud.
  • 5:
    • Optimising this bomb was a nightmare.

Roman Galley:

  • 2:
    • This autoscrolling is very boring so I tried to make it a bit more entertaining.
  • 3:
    • I jumped on the seal on the very last frames.
  • 4:
    • I saved a lot of time by killing the 2 romans with a bomb because meleeing them takes three hits each.
    • I was fast enough to take the potion before taking the damage.
  • 5:
    • Very optimised level.
    • I save a bit of time by falling on the platform below.
  • BOSS:
    • I can hit him 3 times on the left, but only 2 times on the right.
    • Very hard boss because I needed to take damage to hit him.

Rome:

  • 1:
    • Very stupid level design.
  • 2:
    • By using the passage below, I can save a bit of time and gain a bit of life because there is a chicken.
  • 5:
    • Big zip which skips all the level.
  • BOSS: Death abuse.
If you want to know where I have saved time, you can look at this: Forum/Posts/443540.
Thanks to theenglishman for his TAS of this game; to Core Design (Game creators) and to Exonym for his awesome WIP ! Thanks to magicmisteur too who helped me to traduce the text.

Truncated: Judging.

Truncated: This TAS is well made, and a nice improvement over the previous version. The game is still a bit slow (and has silly levels) but the bugs and skips throughout makes it interesting to watch. I think it's borderline, but I'll place it in the moons category. Congratulations!

WOW! Almost 3 minutes and 35 seconds faster than your previous submission! Lots of optimizations, several mistakes fixed, new skips and some new zips! Very good work! Yes vote!

...triggered. Just kidding! It's great to see someone actually take this game seriously. Obvious yes vote. Jeez, has it really been ten years since I did that first rejected run? Time flies, eh?

Now this is much better. I'm glad to see that you took the cloud glitch and applied it to the other locations it can be used as well! I was worried that you wouldnt. There may be a few spots for some minor improvements, but I think this is definitely worth a first publication, so you have my yes vote. Good job Arcree2!
Current thoughts: Hachiemon (J) for GBA.

I've just started running this game and noticed two things that might help out. The simple one is in 2-5 (the level with the horses), there's a secret bomb. I believe I do the level a couple second faster and thats without great execution. There's also a full health but I don't think that really helps cos you already have full health coming in. https://clips.twitch.tv/YummyPlausibleKumquatAMPTropPunch The other, I don't have a clip for, but might be a big deal. In 3-6 (the level with the spitting flowers and the moving chomping plants), towards the end you use two clouds to skip some platforms on the left and just go right up the wall. At one point I messed it up, but tried to make the jump anyway... and I clipped into the wall one tile down. I was able to continue walking to the right and still finish the level. Not only would this save the short amount of time it takes to get the second cloud in that level, but if its something that's possible in other places, then it could open up a bunch of possibilities. I'll try to recreate it, but I've never used Sega Emulator/TAS tools and without save states, it might be a pain to recreate.

So I spent a little time in emulator. Was able to recreate it in the same spot FAIRLY easily... but couldn't pull it off anywhere else... not sure what logic is breaking behind the scenes so not sure how to take full advantage. Looks like you can't upload to these forums and guessing this thread is stale and nobody cares anymore... and it doesn't seem useful yet for speedrun so I'm gonna leave this alone for now. Let me know if you want the tasproj file and we can look deeper.

Hi, that file doesn't show it... and loads from a save which isn't very helpful. Edit: I played around a little bit on that screen and I was able to do it (Bizhawk 1.11.6). I clipped about 16 pixels below the normal ground (just below the yellow bricks) and was able to continue walking. You can fix the movie above by jumping 1 frame earlier to get the glitch to work.
