This topic is long overdue. Feel free to post your favourite anime movies or show. My favourite anime films and shows are:
1. Shigurui. Tremendous show. I owe moozooh my life when he recommended it.
2. Ninja Scroll the movie.
3. Kurozuka. Again, moozooh..
4. Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust.
5. Basilisk.
6. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
If you have any anime show or movie that is similar to my above taste, please do not hesitate to post.
You mentioned 6, so I'll mention 6 too, in order of recollection. These are all very good in my opinion, but it is not an exhaustive list, and there are likely even better ones that I don't remember off the top of my head.

I'll just put a few down... since I was going to mention some but they're already mentioned.
Is this a Zombie? (これはゾンビですか?)
Highschool of the dead (学園黙示録 HIGHSCHOOL OF THE DEAD)
Digimon
There is another but I think I would get banned from tasvideos so I don't want to risk it... creaothceann might get away with it though...
Edit: since I wasn't clear on Digimon (apparently) *ahem*
Digimon Adventure
Digimon Adventure 2
Digimon Tamers
Digimon Frontier
I still need to watch:
Digimon Savers/ Data Squad
Digimon Xros Wars/ Fusion

No mention of the best show to ever be produced in the history of ever? For shame.
Thus, I have to correct this by bringing up Legend of Galactic Heroes, the space opera to end all space operas. It's pretty long, with 110 episodes, 52 Gaiden episodes and 2 movies, but so well worth watching.

If you like violent anime, then you might want to check Elfen Lied. Although it might be a bit too brutal for some people. It has more than just gore, though.
I like Suzumiya Haruhi because of the quality of the drawing and animation (and the plot isn't boring either.)
As for other anime... too many to choose from. I suppose Hikaru no Go, Naruto and Bleach could be mentioned (although they might be a bit too obvious.)
I generally prefer to read the original manga rather than watching the anime adaptation. But this doesn't mean I can't have fun with anime series or movies (yeah, I'm a big fan of the Ghibli-movies). Therefore, I would be very interested to see some recommendations for animes that aren't adaptations of manga (is there a term for this?)
I think the first anime I ever saw was the anime version of Heidi (the one where Hayao Miyazaki worked on). I didn't even realise it was a japanese series back then, I just watched it like it was any other cartoon. Later, around the late 90's, I watched Pokémon and Sailor Moon (I know ALL the guys did!) regularly, now knowing that it was japanese.

There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.
I'm primarily a Gundam fan.
Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO (All 3 of them)
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam
MSG: Char's Counter Attack
Mobile Suit Gundam F91
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam
G Saviour (Although that's a Live Action TV movie)
Mobile Fighter G Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing
Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz
After War Gundam X
Mobile Suit Gundam 00
I'm also working on watching Turn A (∀) Gundam, but I haven't really had time because of summer classes. Eventually I'll get to the MSG:SEED series, MSG Unicorn, and MSG:AGE
My user name is rather long, feel free to call me by htwt or tape.
As per creaothceann's suggestion, don't read the spoilers below if you have any interest in watching the ultra-violent anime Shigurui. The show's only 12 episodes long so just watch the damn thing!
Wow, I tend to strongly dislike manga and I usually shy away from violence, but Shigurui is one of my all time favorites. It's so beautifully animated and somehow both very realistic and ridiculous and fantastic. On its surface, it's just a Tiger vs. Dragon story, but I think it's an excellent period piece as well. It's amazing how bad the men have it, and yet the women have it far worse throughout the story.
For anyone interested, the entire show is free online via Hulu. It's just 12 episodes, so you can easily knock it out in a day or two. As graphically violent as it was, I actually found myself perversely enthralled by all the (non-specific spoilers) decapitations, dismemberment, bifurcations, partial decapitations, eyeball eating, and so on, but the series ended with (another non-specific spoiler) one of the most disgusting, discomforting things I've ever seen on television. (somewhat more specific spoiler) "Whoa, he's messed up. Dang. Wait, what are you doing, Fujiki? ACK! STOP THAT!"
The full manga is also available online. I can't say I recommend it quite as strongly as the anime, which has a tighter story, but it does bring closure. The middle third of the manga is kind of dumb except (more non-specific spoilers) even though it is the bloodiest part of the entire series, I found myself bored because hardly anything happens. Then it ends with another part just as discomforting as the end of the anime.
Whew! Enough spoilers for you?
I made a deal with my friend that if I watched 10 or so of his favorite movies, he would play Mother 3. He recommended Grave of the Fireflies, warning me that it was extremely depressing. In his own words: "The happiest parts are watching people slowly die." Likewise, I warned him that Mother 3 was very depressing.
I watched the movie, was touched but not moved to tears. I called him up and said, "Is that the best you've got?"
I would argue that the -monogatari series are perfectly worksafe. Nisemonogatari has some questionable moments (especially episode 8) but nothing outright pornographic.
Like I mentioned, I watch tons of stuff. A few that have stuck out:
Cowboy Bebop (dub)
Trigun (dub)
Angel Beats! (sub)
Monogatari Series First Season (Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari, Nekomonogatari Black) (sub)
Card Captor Sakura (sub) (there is no dub, only a Nelvana hackjob which made it a completely different show)
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! (sub)
Hyouka (sub)
I'm sure there are more, but I lost about 250 discs (mostly DVDs) of archived fansubs when our basement flooded last month and two of my CD binders got ruined.
No one mentioning Yu Yu Hakusho? D:
I'm an anime lover... If I were to name my major favorites it'd be a real long post.
So basically, top 5...
Yu Yu Hakusho
Elfen Lied
Lucky Star
Death Note
Dragon Ball/ Z/ GT (GT is meh, but oh well).
I'm not much of an anime watcher, but here's the list of anime that I've watched (as an internet stream viewer) so far, mostly in this order (though the order might be mixed up because I don't have an impeccable memory):
-Nyan Koi!
-Magic Knight Rayearth
-School Rumble (all)
-Azumanga Daioh
-CLANNAD (all)
-Love Hina
-Seitokai no Ichizon (all)
-Seitokai Yakuindomo
I also randomly watched various episodes or parts thereof of the following anime (usually not seriously):
- Precure (any)
- School Days
- To Love-Ru
- Sketchbook
I'm pretty much a sucker for comedy but I enjoy some CLANNAD scenery or old-school Magic Knight Rayearth once in a while.
Oh, and I did watch worldwide-TV-broadcast anime as a child, though it is mostly stuff that everybody watched when they were a child: Sailor Moon, Pokemon, and Digimon. Nothing too special about them.

Grave of the Fireflies hits really hard indeed.
I haven't played Mother 3, but it being a sequel to a game that was already outdated back in its time... I guess that must be really depressing.
I have watched some animes years ago, but most were so-so like the ones listed on the posts above. Some I haven't stopped to finish watching, others I don't even remember anymore.
I can recommend:
Serial Experiments Lain - creepy girl and even creepier computer shit
Berserk - medieval violence, demons, huge sword
Evangelion - big monsters, people going insane
Karekano - deep romance crap
Kaiji - gambling (addiction and philosophy)
Gantz - dead people, weird aliens, futuristic guns, gore

functioning — that you are fundamentally able to succeed in life and, therefore, are deserving of that success."

Anime topics like this are my favorite way to discover new stuff! My anime habit actually picked up after becoming a dad because it is a great way to spend the night shift. I have to say, watching at night while holding your little baby increases the emotional intensity of certain shows.
Some of my recent favorites that haven't been mentioned:
Summer Wars (movie)
Gurren Lagann
Ano Hana
Amagami
Clannad After Story
Older stuff:

That's probably the most irritating TV show I have ever seen. It just exasperated me to no end.
So this student is studying for some university admittance exams or whatever, and he's so poor he can barely survive. His only hope to ever get a decent job is to get to the university and earn a degree.
His neighbors belittle him and his efforts to get to pass the exams, party in his room without his consent all night long, almost every night, and one of the neighbors even steals the little food he has. He does nothing to remedy this situation, but instead suffers all this abuse like a sucker. The landlady does nothing to remedy the situation, even though it would be fully in her right to do so. He thus fails the exams (and only gets ridiculed because of it) and has his food stolen, and does nothing.
At some point he gets in a fight with the landlady or something, and he moves to another apartment. The previous tenants refuse to move out, keep living there without his consent, eat his food and even steal all his stuff and sell it. He does not call the police. He does nothing. He only suffers through all this abuse like a sucker. These criminals get no punishment, nothing.
And this is not played for drama (which could at least had some semblance of making sense.) All this is supposed to be humorous. We are supposed to laugh.
My ass. I get angry just remembering all that.
I'm almost at the end of Maison Ikkoku right now. Got, like, nine episodes left. Already know how it's going to end, though. But I like it. Even if Godai has no spine.
Seems to be a pattern with Takahashi works that they never end quite like I want them to end, though. Okay, that's not really true, the ending of Ranma½ (manga) wasn't really bad, but it wasn't much of an ending. But Inuyasha kept going for like half an episode after what I would have considered a fantastic place to end it.

Well, it spawned 3 video games, a Final Chapter movie, three OVAs (one original story and two summaries), and a music special along with a live action movie so I guess others enjoyed it.
Anyways....

The focus of the characters trying to prevent the story from being a tragedy just humors me to no end. Especially the end when it was revealed that the writer managed to control the events all these years was by botting writing. That just cracked me up due to reasons unrelated to the anime.
