No:)
I bet this reply means you are working on it with cardboard or someone else :D
Unfortunately not, until one hour ago I had never tried TASing this game:D

I'm busy with school work and two other runs together with Hotarubi. But if no one quickly makes a run out of this I can eventually be there and help out later.

Well my other ideas failed. I can't seem to improve your fm2. That's cool... So about a 75 frame improvement. Biggest smb2 improvement in a long while. I'll have to try some more to improve it later.

Nice! Can't wait to see this done. It's really bugging me now that I can't figure out what caused that "Holding a Snifit" glitch I got on the wii that one time. It could save serious time in many rooms. Maybe it's somehow possible to pick up a false/dying enemy during the screen transition so you're holding it in the new room? I don't know.

Wow, I tried that same thing. The only issue was that I didn't move the carpet at all forward before going left. So moving the carpet slightly right was a requirement for the Pidgit to come back? I wonder if it could be done slightly quicker still. I've tried different things and keep ending with the same time now. Maybe someone more experienced with smb2 TASing could shed some light?

What happened exactly?

I know that the old Pidget has to be completely off the screen in order for the new one to spawn. Regarding the snifit glitch, it happened while playing on the Wii VC a while back. I was playing through the game normally as Mario, but when I entered Mouser's room (Pretty sure it was 1-3, but might have been 3-3), when I fell from the top of the screen into the boss room, I was holding a gray snifit for absolutely no reason. I threw it at Mouser.

That's very strange. Your idea about it being a dead enemy kinda seems like it might make sense. I'm going to experiment with that a bit to see if I find anything interesting.

Since it was on the Wii VC, is it guaranteed to work on the NES game too? And by the way, since you where able to throw the enemy at the boss it sounds more likely that it happened on level 3-3. About making this run I've given it some thought and I might consider taking it (for now - the warped run), someone needs to do it you know. Now I just need to team up with someone. This is because I won't be able to work with it that much for the next coming months, sry AngerFist - christmas will probably be to much to ask:(, and we'll be more sure that the run is optimized this way - which is of course extra important in a Mario game. If someone feels like joining (I probably won't start until someone does), please post in the forum or PM me.

I'm willing to join this project. I'm not the best TASer though... EDIT: note to self: check duckjump = time saver?

I'm pretty sure you can do this game justice. I'll PM you my thoughts about it later.

Okay, I'm absolutely sure that there's something going on with invisible/dead actors in this game. I just had another strange thing happen, also on the Wii VC. On 5-2, at the end of the first room where there's a vine to climb up, I threw an unripe veggie to kill a bunch of the enemies, leaving only the shyguy alive and walking away. Then I jumped onto the vine and started climbing up, but on the way up, the shyguy died for no reason. There's got to be something going on here... the veggie wrapped around the screen and hit the shyguy, or something.

I have seen this type of thing happen before. I'm still not exactly sure how it occurs, but it's very strange. But yeah all of a sudden a random enemy just dies after you kill some other ones.

From the discussion, it looks like you'd want to hook whatever byte(s) represent the enemies' dead/alive state. Reproduce the "shyguy drops dead for no reason" glitch, then break on write, and backtrace until things start making sense.

I don't know about disassemble but when we did our TASes of this game, I mapped most every ram address out: https://files.tasvideos.org/gamesresources/nes/smb2u/SMB2U.xls That file also contains sheets of frame counts for our movies. That should come in handy to whom ever is obsoleting it. However, all of this is moot if you don't understand the subpixel hell of this game.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

I caught a movie of an enemy dying for no reason. Analyze away! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/646180794/smb2_die.fm2 Merry Christmas, I guess...?

I'm still convinced for a no warp run, that you can skip levels without the black level screen showing up by the ladder glitch. I have pulled this off once, didnt record, didnt even bother with it again. I went from 3-1 to 3-2 from a ladder glitch. Wondering if its possible again?

andrewg just performed a glitch live on SDA charity marathon that skipped Wart's death animation. Watch it at 1:02:30 here

Fortunately, it is Andrew G who is doing the tool assisted run for this game, and he is probably well aware of the glitch that he performed.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't aware at the time. =p My best attempt was ~60 frames slower than the published run. I could upload the fm2 if necessary, I just threw the final vegetable in the published run such that the next vegetable spawned before the first hit Wart. (Edited incorrect stuff out.) Unfortunately there is a pretty good chance that it may not be possible to save time at all. It is definitely worth looking into though. EDIT: (To clarify, it is a faster Wart kill, but you have to wait for and throw the next vegetable which cuts off most (if not all) of the time that would be saved.)

I actually was completely unaware of this glitch. Such a strange coincidence for it to occur during the actual speedrunning event. I have no idea if it can save time (I thought it eliminated the music at the end)... but I guess not. I didn't notice it because of how much of a surprise it was, hopefully it can be used for the upcoming TAS. I'm not exactly sure what is needed for the glitch to occur, but of curse I will be experimenting with it. This is one of the strangest things that's happened to me while playing.
