This seems like a strange game to do any speed runs with, but there are a couple of options: 1. Endless mode (Type-A), high score. You could simply play until you reached a score of 999,999. If you start at level 19 (naturally, you should), it doesn't take all that long. 2. Type-A high level. I honestly don't know how long someone would be willing to play, but note that once you get to level 29 (I've recently discovered), the pieces fall even FASTER than before, meaning that they're falling faster than you can physically drop them on any previous level. It's HARD. Even playing at low speeds; moving the pieces left or right fast enough is not an easy task. 3. Type-B game on various levels. On top of these options, things to take into consideration: 1. For high scores quickly, score only Tetris'; meaning, only clear 4 lines at a time. 2. If you're scoring only using Tetris', keep in mind that you can get more of the other pieces (that is, other than the straight 4-block piece, required for scoring a Tetris) dropped more quickly if you keep your plane of pieces closer to the top of the screen than to the bottom (keeping the plane by the bottom would be safer, but we're not going for safe, are we??? ;) ) I think it's interesting to watch, but it can get rather boring quite quickly. I think doing a Type-B game would be the most entertaining. I have a Type-A movie in progress of Tetris-only scoring that gets to level 29. It takes a while and gets repetetive quickly, but if you can do really well (and abuse the randomness factor), keep your plane close to the top, and move swiftly, it could be fun to watch. I dunno; just some ideas. Anyone have any input?

Sure, it could be fun to watch if it isn't too long. If no one else does, I will at least watch it.

How about a race to see who can finished Type-B 9-5. It would depend a lot on luck, but at least it would be quick.

What luck? You can restart it until the pattern is what you like and use timed button presses to affect what pieces appear.

Or even better, 19-5 (pick 9, hold down A). I can't see that being even humanly possible to do...would make a killer emulator recording :)

I would like to see someone finishing 9-5 with no pieces left on the screen. That sounds very difficult, but I think it can be done.

one thing that would help greatly is manipulating the ratio of pieces that fall. when you have a long piece or a square (ie a more desirable piece) if you rapidly spin it this will increase the chances of gettibng that piece again (ever wonder why squares are "rare") if manipulated well, you can get more straight pieces then any other shape, thus improving the "run" drasticly (this works in any version of tetris nintendo/tengen/bps)

For arcade versions, there already are some movies. You might want to take a look at them. http://www.macobserver.com/article/2004/01/14.1.shtml http://home.comcast.net/~arcthelad/

Regarding Tetris the absolute plus, I've heard Morimoto is quite skilled in that game. However the player in the movie at Arc's site is not him.

Regarding Tetris: I don't know why the 800 level run is the most common movie online. It's certainly not the best one out there, although it is the only one which has the players hands visible. On Arika's very own webpage, you can find a complete death mode run: http://homepage2.nifty.com/arika_download/mpeg/Death-Gm05.mpg

I tried the type B-9-5. I finished with a time of 58 seconds. But im not sure what would be fun to watch here. To finish it with no pieces left seems to be hard, and also time consuming since the line animation is a bit slow. So scoring all 25 will take time. But im not sure that a fast time is the primary goal here..

Finished B-19-5 with 51 seconds. That was hard though. I made the mistake to try to get more then 1 line at the time ;) Ending up at the top of the screen for the rest of the play.

<-- is continuing the discussion from the Zelda thread I counted wrong, it's actually 2 frames, not 6, on level 19. 6 is level 9. Then it's 5 for 10-12, 4 for 13-15, and 3 for 16-18. It takes 42 Tetrises to max the score, starting on level 18.. I think I will code (not play XD no luck manipulation just putting pieces where I want them most efficiently) this movie.

So, you are just writing a program that shows what the best possible way to play it assuming the randomness goes in your favor? In that case, what is more effective than getting all straight lines? Well, like you said, it would be faster to do near the top of the screen so they have to drop less, but that also just requires some vertical bars stacked on top of each other. And another thing to consider is that it will probably be the fastest to only get tetris in groups of 5 because there is probably some delay (I'm just guessing on this. It might not matter the size of groups that you get it in depending on how the tetris animation is done)

No I am playing using a hex editor rather than a controller. I see the next piece I'm working with, I feed in the controller data to make it go where I want, I see the next piece, etc. Basically it's the same as simply playing the game but with the fastest possible reflexes. EDIT: In other words, it's very tedious and can be easily beaten.

Why are you doing this instead of playing it very slowly?

It's certaintly faster to do that (or to pause, hold all buttons you want, unpause, repeat).. and so I will, since I don;t really care about the end result looking good (which was the point of hex-editing, so it would always have the perfect path to the destination). I just want to see the score max and see what levels 20-29 are like.

115 lines, 501 200 points, but still on level 19. Is this really the final level and everyone who claims otherwise a liar?

iirc, levels increase only when you pass 10*level in lines.. so for level 20, wouldn't you need to pass 200 lines cleared?

This is only true for levels 0-9. At levels 10 and beyond, level increases at 100 and every multiple of 10 thereafter. So if you started at level 12, for example (my favorite level!) then you would hit level 13 at 100 lines.

Keep going until 150...I seem to remember once I started on a really high level (at least 15, I think) and was expecting the level to change at 100, but it didn't until 150...o_O
