About the game

SaGa Frontier is a RPG by Square, released in Japan on July 11, 1997. The game was later published by Sony Computer Entertainment in North America(SCEA) on March 25, 1998. It is the seventh game in the SaGa series and the first to be released on the PlayStation.
The plot of SaGa Frontier take place a science fiction/fantasy setting called the Regions, a group of worlds with varying degrees of culture, unique races, technology, and magic. The game allows the player to follow the exploits of one of seven protagonists, each with his or her own storyline and goal. The game's Free Scenario System offers a large amount of non-linear gameplay, allowing the player to freely travel between many of the Regions, interact with other characters, and take part in turn-based combat. If certain conditions are met within the battle, party members on either side can create combination attacks for added damage.

Nach: We now have Rules regarding BIOSes, and how to make submissions for runs for emulators that use BIOSes. This run adhears to them. Accepting.

Aktan: Processing.
Spikestuff: Sync Note: In order for this to run on pcsx-rr you must compress the bin/iso to the bz format. And for those figuring out the bios it's SCPH7001.

Because using the 1001 (default one used by ALL our movies) result in different timing, this would be the only reason, else you have to specify in rules you can take ANY bios and its going to be the fuck fest to know what bios is faster than the others, just to whore on few frames Edit: most obviously the answer is yes and yes, if it wasnt, we would not even have this talk anyway

In the future, we should mandate one (I believe it's been brought up on IRC that an exception would be made for this run since there's no official line on the issue at the moment).

The PlayStation BIOS name is derived from the console model, like the SCPH1001, SCPH7502 etc. There's no PlayStation model (U) (v4.1). My guess is that he is using a normal BIOS with a fancy name.
I am old enough to know better, but not enough to do it.

Yes, and it make sences, accept this one and thereafter set rules lock on 1001 (unless the game need to use a newer bios to operate)

The difference in those BIOS are as follows: scph1000.bin JAPAN scph5500.bin JAPAN scph1001.bin USA (NTSC) scph7001.bin USA (NTSC) dlth3002.bin UK (PAL) scph7502.bin UK (PAL) so, as long as you are TASing an NTSC game, you should use the SCPH1001 or SCPH7001.

No, there isn't. all PlayStations (except some rare models) have their names starting with SCPH-something... when someone dumps a BIOS it's usual to name the BIOS with that model's name.

Yes, I did. But what I mean is that the name of the BIOS don't matter, you can call it PlayStation 3 Ultimate Bios.bin and it will work exactly as if you call it SCPH1001.bin. He is using the SCPH7001, and I'm 44.5% sure about that! Edit: this is from the link you posted: SCPH-7001 Original (Grey) 4.1 (12/16/97) Rev. C NTSC-U/C. Now I'm 100% sure he is using the SCPH7001! Edit2: this is from my other post: scph1000.bin JAPAN scph5500.bin JAPAN scph1001.bin USA (NTSC) scph7001.bin USA (NTSC) dlth3002.bin UK (PAL) scph7502.bin UK (PAL) so, as long as you are TASing an NTSC game, you should use the SCPH1001 or SCPH7001. I don't know if this happens on emulators too, but I remember playing some PAL games on an NTSC PlayStation (with a modchip), and I couldn't see the bottom of the screen, and the sound was not in sync.

I haven't been a part of the whole bios conversation, and adelikat appears to have already spoken for this run in terms of judging, so I'll just add in my 2 cents and leave it at that: The first half bored me greatly, the second half was pretty awesome. So I guess that averages out to a meh vote.

This is just like using the Japanese or US version of the game to try to find which which is faster or whatever. In this case it's even less of an issue, because using a different revision of the US BIOS still leaves the game in English.

Why should we mandate one? It's even sillier to mandate one realizing that a particular BIOS will fix/introduce some bugs. Our goal is to show how these games play on real systems sold in stores, when we push them to the limits. Why should we limit ourselves to only one particular model sold in stores? The only thing we need to mandate is that submissions need to specify which country and revision BIOS they used, and not to use any hacked ones, or one which is known not to play the game in question on a real system.

It's definitely the kind of game that is more enjoyable if you have played/beaten it before. Lute's scenario involve little storyline. It has only one dungeon, which is that last one. Everything else that can be done is optional. But it's obviously better to get various stuff to build your characters up before it... when it's not a TAS, that is. Half of the video is preparation for said dungeon, which is why it's so long and slow. Having beaten the game with all seven characters (and 2nd Division), I liked the run and all the subtleties that someone that has not played the game might not notice. On a sidenote, couldn't Mei-Ling take 3 more damage at the end? ^_^
I lurk, okay?

I'm glad this finally got published, and it's rather entertaining for those who have played the game, especially for people with a detailed knowledge of it. The only thing I would have liked to see was for the ship/loading screens to be edited out of the encode. Unfortunately, they make up a not insignificant portion of the run and are pretty intrusive.

We have a dedicated package that resolves tiny subtitle halo in hires (makes subtitles hard to read on bright background): http://tasvideos.org/EncodingGuide/PublicationManual.html#Downloads_2 Also we use vorbis to encode audio for youtube, not aac. Encoder logo looks a bit empty.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

In addition to what feos wrote, I have a few concerns myself:
  • The subtitle placement isn't exactly the best. I'd probably make them 2 parts and put them on the lower left side (and as feos said, make them more readable).
  • The CRF setting (17) is pretty high for something that's intended for YouTube. We usually encode at QP 5 for YouTube.
  • The encode itself isn't cut properly. I'd cut it before the song starts.
  • Speaking of the audio...which SPU plugin did you use, and more importantly, did you use the resync workflow?
  • Finally, at which resolution did you dump the TAS at? A green line at the left can be noticed here. (you may need to download the image to be able to see it)
That's all for now. I will say though that I appreciate you tackling on a TAS done on PCSX, even if it's not up to par yet.

I'm wondering what to do.
Speaking of the audio...which SPU plugin did you use, and more importantly, did you use the resync workflow?
I used the Eternal SPU plugin. http://pastebin.com/g26ksKNa I used this method. Because desync occurred at the beginning when using pcsx-13f's pcsx.exe.
Finally, at which resolution did you dump the TAS at?
I dumped it at 2880x2160. There's a line at the dumped point that I'll check. It will take time.
