Wasn't there a statue in Level 8 that required you to shoot its eye with an arrow to get a key? I always thought the bow was necessary.

I don't recall that, and I don't see it on the map.

On Turtle Rock, an optimal key is in the statue in a room up 1, right 2, up 1, left 1, up 1, left 1 from start.

The room on the map I'm talking about is room C4. If it's an optional key, the B&A probably isn't necessary.

You will then need to get a key from the Dodongo's I think, which takes a long time.

I just played through this game and got both the C4 arrow key and the Dodongo key and ended the level with zero keys. I also can't think of any place I entered an unnecessary door. Is some glitch involved in making a key obsolete?

Did you watch my run? You can sequence break the dungeon, and in an even better way than I did.

Everyone seemed to avoid using the game restart sequence, I personally saw it as an advantage. Have I missed something that I should know?

It's a teleport trick banned by SDA because it was revealed post-no-teleport tricks in the SDA rulings. TG also recently banned it as well.

Aye, I understand then. I always thought that if a normal player knew of it, then it was ok. Like in the run of Zelda 3, they use the save and quit trick a lot.

That's the 1 thing about the TAS I don't like and wish was changed.

I actually agree with that... it would be more interesting to see how each TAS gets to places faster than "legit" runs without quit-warping.

My logical explanation is - you get a "games played" tallied onto your game if you save/quit. It's essentially the same as dying.

This site prohibits neither dying or using restart button sequences. And personally I would rather see a run with them utilized. They are standard features of playing the game. Watching backtracking is not very entertaining.

I guess...but seeing a "death" on your score looks stupid...especially for a TAS...

The optimal turtle rock route, or something very close to it: http://www.zhq2.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3688&view=findpost&p=80107 Yeah, the math is inaccuate, but not by enough to account for those differences. I suppose, when getting the first key, you could try going up + right instead of up + up at the start and dashjumping across the pit, but that's almost definitely slower, because you have to kill the keese-on-steriods thing in the second screen and then pick up enough pots to hit the switch. I didn't bother timing it. Also, this is obvious, but you should be jumping over enemies and landing on top of them for a damage boost.

Beh, I was trying to do this run. But after reading through many forums, it's probably not worth it to finish. There are much better time attackers then me that will probably release one before I finish :P

Can you release your former WIP or detail any weird tricks possible on a console that you perform?

I know this is a bump, but I was playing LADX the other day and found something that might speed up runs slightly - with either the Guardian Acorn or the Piece of Power, if you press Start and enter the inventory screen as soon as you pick one up, then immediately exit the inventory screen, the screen will stay white for about an extra second, and then the game will proceed without displaying the message box for the item, which I think is faster than going through the three 'screens' of message that the game normally gives you. I don't know if this would be so helpful for the original LA since you can dump out of the "non-vital" message boxes with B, but I figure it might greatly help anyone doing an LADX run, since the Piece of Power makes you walk quite a bit faster than normal.

I suppose now would be a good time to mention I'm working on an improvement to the glitch run? (I started yesterday, and it is my first TAS...) Of course, his text-fiddling was horribly inefficient (autofire doesn't work well), so that gave me about half a second, then I start mysteriously losing frames all the while after that... I'm almost tempted to restart my run from just after warping for the sword. Frame counts follow:
 him me diff checkpoint
----- ------ ------ -----------------------------
 2142 2105 -37 exit marin's house
 3298 3246 -52 sword text disappears
 4620 4578 -42 game restart sequence
  ... 4573 -47 redone game restart sequence
 4756 4706 -40 level 8 fadein complete
5116 5069 -47 last 'e' in 'we were' [born of nightmares]
9676 ~9802 +126 phantom gannon beaten, pending dethl
I use the tilde to indicate that's an approximate time (it's probably less than that), but I'll have to redo the fight anyway as I ended up losing a full heart, and you need at least two-and-a-half hearts to make it through the end stairs with two Dethls pounding you. No (recent) movie yet, as it's 6 AM and I'm in no mood to update, but... yep. (Edit: whoops, didn't close the code tag properly)

Oh, goodie. I have been hoping someone would redo this movie. If you can upload a movie somewhere I could have a look at it after the weekend. I remember there being another suggestion for how it could be done faster in this topic (I think). I don't think it's included in the published video. You should check that out.
