(third time's a charm?) I'm am planning a run on this game, which is probably my favorite Genesis game. I'm hoping someone out there can help me plan this by sharing knowledge of any glitches, bugs, shortcuts, etc. Maps would also help. Google hasn't turned up anything useful. GameFAQs has a map of the maze level but that's about it. Thanks in advance.

i tried a run of this game. 3 times in fact. i did quite well i think up until stage 2-2 (or whatever that city stage is called) where no matter how many times i rerecorded, i always got a desync. i couldnt help this at all no matter what i tried. if you have better luck i'd love to see a run. this game is quite long and has some rather funny bosses. (terminator and spider man anyone? lol) as far as i know there are'nt any glitches or bugs, but i do know a few tips that could be of help. 1.) using the fire ninjitsu at the boss levels (cant remember the name, its the one that has 5 or 6 moving fire bars) seems to do the most damage to them. 2.) on the 3-3 boss or whatever level the army base boss is,when it opens its shell to show its brain, you can jump in between the shell, and the brain getting in 2 or 3 heavy slashes with your POW upgraded sword. 3.) the diffrence between a powered up shuriken and normal one is a lot. try always to have a POW on along with a high supply of shurikens (you will need them bad in the 2nd last, and last level) i think 3 normal shurikens = 1 powered up one. 4.)on level 1-2 the bamboo traps that have tops that move up and down (hope you know what i mean) they cant be jumped without much time wasted waiting around for the top to come down. i actualy found this out on accedent. if you tap right or left really lightly so you fall down just beside the bamboo you wont get hurt. if you play around with the jump button you will find out how long you need to hold it to jump over without getting hurt. it looks like you will but you wont. 5.) on a few of the levels (cant remember all but i think one is in 3-2 which is the military airship and the other in 5-2 which is the junkyard factory) there are extra ninjitsu marks that you can collect. while some might be a little out of the way to get i do recommend getting these as it does make boss fights eaiser. then again with some skill you will be able to defeat the bosses without needing an extra ninjitsu. hope this helps

Oh, I can't wait to see it. I have a little trick for the 2-2 boss. Keep crouching, so the boss will try to hit you on the floor, and you'll be able to give it 2 hits with your sword.

As promised, I started a run a long time ago, but now I lost the motivation to do it, and I realise I could have done the wrong choices. Here are some questions to begin with :
  1. Are you people more interested in seeing a beggining with 0 shurikens (Neofix's movie) than with 50 shurikens (jhp's movie)? I started with 0 shurikens because that way you can make a completely different stage compared to all those you have shurikens, but here's the problem :
  2. If I were doing run starting with no shurikens, where would I choose the pow? I thought I could be taking it in 1-2 but this may be slower than taking it in 1-1.

I don't care much for 0 shurikens. You get new ones almost immediately anyway, so it seems pointless. I'm interested in seeing an improvement to Neofix's run. I've been planning to do it myself, but my TASing plans have gone nowhere lately.

I agree with Truncated, not much point in picking 0 shurikens because you will collect some in less than 30 seconds.

I am currently improving Dammit's TAS of the revenge of shinobi, to be able to compare with his run, it is still performed with no shuriken at the beginning. As it is my first TAS, I could probably benefit from some advice, if anyone has some. When I find some time to work on it, I will try to make the train level less boring. I think it looks nice. Also good improvements. Not sure if you need to improve the entertainment level of the train level. It is not that boring and it is quickly over with. I was wondering though, in the highway level seen at ~6:08. Would it be possible to increase the entertainment by switching sides a bit to early and have the shinobi almost fall to his death, and save the jump by one of those mid-air jumps that you perform throughout the game? Also I think like the previous posters that one could skip on the 0 shurikens since it doesn't really matter for the run. It does not add any difficulty nor entertainment at all for the run in my opinion.

In the highway level, it is not possible to almost fall and switch side, as when Joe (the shinobi) go on the road side lower than the ground it is blocked below the floor and fall without any chance to came back. If it switch inside the ground, it is ejected in the up left direction, which make the level slower. I decide to keep beginning with 0 shuriken as it allows to perform the continuous hitting movement with his sword at the beginning and in casual playing having no shuriken makes the game way harder. Compared to the previous run, 100 less shurikens are taken so the routing changes a bit to save some. The same goes with the difficulty setting, in fact, it doesn't seems to change anything exept giving you less life, and it doesn't matter in a damageless run. Furthermore, I like the idea of beginning and ending with 0 shuriken, as it is now. If there is no comment on it, I will probably submit it like this : https://youtu.be/brdrs0RQ5mQ

Looks solid to me! BTW. Is it faster to use the high-jump special in level 5-1 rather than using those infinite jump techniques that you perform in earlier stages?

For the level 5-1, I remembered trying without power (and it is noted as a failure in my list of things to try) but I must have made some improvement in my way of routing as I have just succeed in making it faster than with the power (about 40 frames). I feel kind of stupid to have miss this. Thank you very much for the review.

Sounds great. Waiting for the final results. I could not find anything more obvious to improve. Not that 5-1 was obvious. Was just a question. Glad it turned into an improvement. :)

Currently, the level looks like that : https://youtu.be/brneSrU7R2w But I haven't done enough work on the optimization of the vertical speed and it can be tricky. And for some reason that i do not understand, lag frames appears (at least in the level 5-2) after changing this level. I will also need to investigate that.

No no, that's not I meant. This item sometimes shows up, sometimes it doesn't. I don't know how to trigger this item to make it show up. There are a few of these kind of conditional hidden items. For example in 1-1, there is a hidden 50 shuriken high up. To get that you have to past first bamboo bunch until is disappeared from display. Then you go back and get it. Or in 1-2, there is a hidden power up high up before you end the stage, to get that you have to past the boulder, go back and get it But I can't figure out conditions for big heart in 4-2. 50 shuriken in 1-1 Hidden power up in 1-2

You just have to damage them for them to show. Like throw a kunai. But I guess some have other hidden conditions? Interesting.

Sorry my English is limited so I might not have been specific enough. I know I have to shoot them. But those conditional ones need more than that. Big heart in 4-2 is one of those.

Is it even supposed to be a hidden item? To me it looks like it's sort of jammed into / overlapping with other graphics. Could it be that this is some sort of camera scroll / wrapping bug or glitch? Maybe the item is supposed to spawn somewhere else, but by manipulation it appears in the flamethrower like shown in your screenshot. You mention that you backtrack both in stages 1-1 and 1-2 to make those items appear. Is the condition similar for the big heart in 4-2? Do you wiggle around somehow? Left-Right-Left-Right for example?

I passed first gear while I was double jumping then went left and shoot spread shot. That made it appear. So I thought I have to go back like those 2 item. But I can't replicate it in TAStudio.

Ok, so two instances I've got it was to pass those two iron pillars, go back and be lower than first platform. But I can't quite figure out how to get 7-2's hidden ninjutsu right before stage ends. Its condition doesn't seem like simple as "go upper platform", I think it's more than that.
