Sorry for the wait (I don't check this topic often) but yes, desmume on my comp. is verrrrrrry lagggggggy. I'm also switching to v9.5, so I have to start the run over. The very incomplete WIP would be here.

I think you should post WIPS here because of this thread.

I'd suggest switching to .9.6 when it comes out, instead.

I have been attempting a tas of this game, and it's been going good so far. I just got the first special attack at 15 minutes and 27.44 seconds.

The first 7:50 of the test TAS can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1FVwlIeeL4 . Also, this is going to just be my test tas.

Nice! Can you manipulate the lucky strikes in the first battle?

Not that I know of. As far as I know, lucky hits are predetermined. I tested this and if you save a state, get a lucky hit, then go back, you will get a lucky hit again. The same goes with non-lucky hits. The only thing that might affect this is either doing stuff out of battle to make more lucky hits in the random number generator, or intentionally failing a hit.

Wow, so that's why I wasn't able to mainipulate a lucky hit in the prequel! It seems this game and prequel have similiar Rngs determining a Lucky Hit! And yes, I just tried your "Savestate trick", so I'm sure the prequel's "luck" is also predetermined. Thanks for the info!

Part 2 is now online! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwSoErwGUKI It went pretty good, with about .75-1.5 seconds wasted. I don't know if I chose the best stopping point, but that doesn't matter. I am currently at the wiggler battle at about 1:18, but I am currently taking a break to upload what I have so far.

Is it faster to hit blocks, like the Attack Piece blocks for the Green Shell attack, with Luigi?

The run seems very... unoptimized. Your movements are unimpressive. You do microadjustments from time to time. That kind of screams normal play, not TAS. And in the battles I saw that you get some Good hits instead of Excellent for no apparent reason. And Mario jumped before an attack for no reason. It seems like you made a mistake and thought the enemy would attack Mario instead of Luigi. It just... looks bad. I'm thrilled that you're doing a run of the game, but IMHO, you should optimize some more. It looks bad. To me, at the very least.

The run is unoptimized because it is both a test TAS and my first tas. Also, what do you mean by microadjustments? And Mario jumping before an attack doesn't really matter for a test. I get better in the later levels. Perhaps I should TAS the first game for experience then do this game?

Technically, isn't the first game Super Mario RPG?

That test run, and this 110-part walkthrough (clear time about 24 hours, but many of the battles and the level grinding near the end to reach the secret Rainbow and Final Boss ranks are cut from the video), make clear just how slowly this game runs on my old laptop, whether in DeSmuME or in NO$GBA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k--9_Z4-pW0

The first game in the Mario & Luigi RPG series is Superstar Saga for GBA; if he wanted to gain experience with an earlier game the only good option is Partners in Time, the other Mario RPG on the DS...but seriously IMO he should just stick to this game, it's not like the others are any easier to optimize, and Superstar Saga IIRC still has emulation problems that explain why nobody has submitted a run for it yet.

Yea, RPG's are hard to start TASing, especially when your knew. Saying that, it had been pulled off by some new people. According to Wikipedia, the Mario and Luigi games are part of the Mario RPG games, which Super Mario RPG is the first one. Anyway, keep up with the run. Practice makes perfect, and one day we will see a run of this published.

Oh, it's a test run. Then it makes sense. By micro adjustments I mean that instead of going straight, sometimes you adjust a little right or left sometimes. For optimized movement, you would go right or left as much as necessary first and then just go straight.

No, it's M&L: Superstar Saga for the GBA, if you're talking about the M&L series. (Which is nonetheless very diffrent from this game, IIRC.)

Sorry I haven't been for awhile, I just discovered the Backloggery and haven't been able to stop playing video games. I assure you I will work on it today, and hopefully get some serious progress done on it in the next couple of weeks. I also assure you that this isn't a quote.

Not of very good quality. I can understand firing the punch earlier as the small amount of damage was all that was needed to finish off the Blooper statue. But there were a few times where the author took damage when there was no need to.
Why, oh, why do I even try to understand my own species?

Taking damage may cause a faster animation?

Is anyone actually still working on this, or is this a dead project?

So I've discovered that playing (the battles at least) at frame-precision is more fun than I thought it would be. Also the Carrot Eating Game (which I dread doing in Realtime) is trivial at Frame Precision. [EDIT] I'm going to edit in my notes and observations as I go.
