Hi all, I'm new here. :) Anyhow, I'm kind of new to this "speed run movie making" thing--so far I have done two "successful" videos with Famtasia, one for Ninja Gaiden, and one for Ninja Ryukenden 2 (Ninja Gaiden 2, Japanese version) If anyone is interested in watching, here are some links: Ninja Gaiden 1 Ninja Ryukenden 2 Neither of these are "fast as possible," there are several shortcuts where taking a hit is faster, these are more oriented toward being "perfect plays" though they're not that either :p (It's literally impossible to finish Ninja Gaiden without taking a single hit against the last boss) I really want to do a Ryukenden 3 movie, but Famtasia can't run that ROM properly. I've tried making movies of it several times with other emulators (VirtuaNES, Nestopia, etc) and while they run the ROM fine, they all go horribly, horribly out of synch, and usually fairly early on in the movie as well. Also I noticed trying to play either of the "successful" movies I've made in other emulators besides Famtasia make them go out of synch as well. Does anyone know any good workarounds for this? I'd like to get my movies into an emulator that can convert to AVI, but at this rate I'll never get it done... Masakado

You can only play a movie with the emulator that you made it with. If you send your movies to Bisqwit and their good enough to be published he'll convert them to avi.

*yawn* Color me cynical, but I'm not impressed. While your Ninja Gaiden movie was indeed quite fast, it was rather devoid of style--I prefer my "speed-run" movies to at least have the illusion of not being blatantly made with exploits, which you can't really say when you do stuff like the 15-attacks-in-one-jump you did on the two last bosses. Add to that you got hit several times when you didn't have to and didn't even save time, and took the "Rambo approach" throughout the entire game, (ie. no incidences of "artful dodging" and precision jumping through hordes of enemies, just Jump-slash whenever multiple enemies appear) made it a rather boring movie to watch. And I personally find the way you talk yourself up on your page (oh yeah this movie I made is so impressive! etc) to be rather arrogant. But that's just me.

Lezards Ninja Gaiden runs are great. I have not seen him take a hit where it does not save time. The point of the plays is to finish the games as fast as possible, not to make artful dodgings I think.

That's it.Being hit is not important if it can improve the game.By the way you're right about Lezard's time attack can be improve.I think it can be beaten by 1 minute by judging the video.Well anyway it's pretty nice to watch.

Well, I don't have a stopwatch, but at first viewing Masakado's NG1 movie seems a little tighter than Lezard's. I enjoyed the "style" of his play, for lack of a better word. And he definitely did a few things quicker, like the third boss (the jumping ninja) and I saw a few jumps along the way that he either skipped or streamlined.

One could interpret a "yawn" as arrogant too. Don't forget, this is supposed to be fun. Let's not start taking things too seriously here. We're playing video games.

I you don't like i respect your opinion, some may like it, some may not, don't take it too personally, i'm not being arrogant here, and haven't said my movie was better than yours. In my commentary i say it entertaining because it really is, and the effort it costed was worth it, when i play, i use all kind of shortcuts i can find along, exploit bugs and glitches as much as i can (thing you didn't do in your video), and neither go back (thing you did in Snow Stage), i'm not judging your video, i'm criticizing it, and it may be better. If you're talking about creativeness and imagination, then see other type of movies like Double Dragon II or Castlevania I by Bisqwit and see if you can learn something or go to Bisqwit's site and read the guidelines.

i just watched the NG2 run, and it's quite good as well. Have you contacted Bisqwit yet regarding these movies? Regardless of their comparison to Lezard's, his runs are on VirtuaNES, so we don't have any Famtasia runs at all.

I would accept VirtuaNES movies if it worked in wine, but currently only Famtasia ones are accepted. Starting VirtuaNES.exe with regular wine: Doing the same as root: When starting as root, this is also outputted to terminal:

How about posting Masakado's Famtasia run-throughs of Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Ryukenden II? They're pretty good. Have you seen them yet?

I know, but that's not working. So I was wondering if he wasn't running real windows since that would probably work.

No, and am not going to have. It's waste to run Windows in a computer :) I feel a little handless with it. I can do everything I need with Linux (like watch anime or irc) and there are many things I can't do fluently enough with Windows (like develop unix programs or remotely use other unix machines). Besides, there are a myriad of reasons why I dislike Microsoft. Currently Famtasia and Igowin are the only programs I need a Windows compatibility layer for. For a long time Scream Tracker 3 was the only reason for me to keep Windows 98 on my disk (to run DOS with MPU-401 emulation), but since I haven't got anything done with it for a long time, I don't have that reason anymore.

Never heard of them before. [Edit: Oops.] I don't read forum posts that announce new movies. As stated in the board rules, these forums are not the right place to publish your movies. Read the can you add my video section of the tasvideos FAQ for instructions.

The beginning of the game is the most vulnerable point of movie making. It's a good idea to record the first 10-20 seconds, then stop, verify it, and resume it or restart if it was broken - then repeat the stop+verify+resume procedure periodically later on.
