Post subject: Silly Idea: Playing It by Ear

Just now I was bored enough to try something a little different: playing through a game by sound and memory. The idea is simple enough: Pick a game and see how far you can get with just sound and your mind's eye. This is my second attempt at Rocket Knight Adventures. The first was on a console (yay for headphone jack!). The first time I got as far as the dragon miniboss; didn't work out so well this time. So, how far can YOU get in a game without video?

I seem to recall hearing that Mike Tyson's Punch-Out has audio cues for everything, which means that it can be played by deaf people with enough patience to learn the cues by trial and error. Edit: as pointed out by Warp down below, of course I meant blind people here. Whoops.

alright mshVSsf played blind for fba-rr http://files.filefront.com/13637756 It's harder then it looks, especially during the mirror. But my plan of spamming hulk's standing fierce, standing jab, and ground wave worked really well. My other plan of spamming spd's didn't work at all.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a video of andrewg (I think it was andrewg) playing SMB 1 by ear, getting quite a bit... I can't seem to find the video though...

I learned how to play through a level of the original Prince of Persia with the monitor off, including a fight sequence.

Tetris: The Grand Master is actually very well-suited for this. Unfortunately, it's not emulated by anything that can produce a movie file. Actually, last I checked, it wasn't even emulated well in the first place. If MAME has improved its emulation of it, I'll at least see if I can screenshot the result. Failing that, there's always my native Street Fighter.
Kirby said so, so it must be true. ( >'.')>

Sadly, when I was a child I played Mike Tyson's Punchout so much that I started doing this with it. I would turn my back to the TV and see how far I could get. I could get all the way up to Tyson. There's even a video tape of me doing this somewhere. (Yeah, I was just that cool)
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

I can't understand how audio cues help deaf people play better... ;)

DeHackEd had hacked together a TASable version of MAME a while back, and did this with it, but I think it was kinda unstable or something...? Can't remember the reason.

Here is a video of SlayerS`Boxer (one of the best starcraft players of all time) playing blind folded against a blind person. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AR_ZMlPoVs The blind person is impressively good, so after losing half his base, boxer removes his blind fold and struggles to survive.
g,o,p,i=1e4,a[10001];main(x){for(;p?g=g/x*p+a[p]*i+2*!o: 53^(printf("%.4d",o+g/i),p=i,o=g%i);a[p--]=g%x)x=p*2-1;}

I could beat a large part of battletoads level 3 in NES without looking at the screen. It's pretty much just memorization and it has all the sounds you need. I have a friend who can actually beat that whole level without looking at the screen to this day. It can be fun to do that with fighting games too. I especially like it with street fighter 2.

The only games I could ever play by ear, were rhythm games. In DDR, I could full combo So Deep on Heavy difficulty with my back to the screen Guitar Hero, I had a few songs memorized, but never full combo'd them. I could consistantly 5 star them though without looking. This video was from a while ago, and wasn't my greatest performance. Between having a camera on me and them wanting me to act like I was "rocking out," I had difficulty with timing. Also, i prefer to sit down and not stand. http://www.games.net/video/bts/102300/greatest-guitar-hero-player-in-the-world/
i see...

There is a glitch in God of War II with which you can stop the game clock in exchange for the game view. From the beginning of the game, I've played until the end of the first boss using it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxZ2V1fzK9s

Aw shucks, I read this as playing game music by ear. I can do that too :D
