Hello there! This right here is my first TAS. I played at 49% speed, so perfection wasn't sought after.
  • Emulator used: snes9x-lua-v0.06 (Use WIP1 timing, fake Mute desync workaround)
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time

Tiger Quarry:

aw man, if only that stair glitch would work in more places. So far i've only been able to use it in three spots, and they are all in the Tiger Quarry. If you climb the first stairs you come across in the waterfall room, you can go up above the screen and somehow end up at the bottom. It doesn't help much tho.
A few seconds were wasted after the Dulan fight. I should have unequiped the Power Ring after picking up the sword.

Ilvern Ruins:

Them firebirds sure are anoying..
The fight against Gilan was kinda slow.

Second visit to Tiger Quarry:

Could save some time by taking a hit on the way down.
I have no idea if you have to grab the Mission tablet. You never seem to use it anywhere. hmm.

Eldam Mountains

wasted about 10 seconds before entering Eldam, I could have skipped the trip to the item shop.
I had to spend some time leveling right before Harpy, so that part is easily fast-forwardable.

Ballactine Castle:

O boy, more leveling.

Galbaland's Island:

This place is really short for a final dungeon.

mmbossman: This line pretty much sums up why I'm rejecting this: "I played at 49% speed, so perfection wasn't sought after." We strive to produce movies that would be impossible to replicate in real time, with focuses on both entertainment and technical prowess. Recording a movie at such a speed decreases your control, and produces a sloppy result. Better luck next time.

Mm, not necessarily; we aim for entertainment, not perfection, as a first goal. But achieving either at 49% speed is a dubious prospect given how hard it'd be to avoid making minor mistakes. I'll grant I haven't watched the run, though.

If the movie is half-assed it's not perfect entertainment and should be rejected.

I thought that perfection was the primary goal, with entertainment suggested during those areas where you can't really do anything to speed up your progress and very few exceptions made for excellent tool-assisted moves that happen to lose a few frames off the ideal. Also, the run should have been made at a lot less than 49% speed; 1% is a better idea (i.e. frame-advance, if you're fast at pressing that button), so I'm voting 0 for both, because this isn't even a TAS.

You aren't supposed to vote unless you've watched the movie; it's not clear from your post if you have. Anyway, the primary goal is entertainment. Since that's hard to measure, people generally go for speed as an easy-to-measure (and, therefore, compete on) proxy for entertainment.

I watched some of the movie. It was about as expected. No runs on this site should ever be done at 49%. They should all be done in frame advance to produce optimal results. That being said, this run provides a sample run to gauge what a well run TAS of this may look like. Making progress is one step closer to getting this run published. I have interest in doing this game in the future. I would definitely emphasize the idea that the run should probably be done on the NES version primarily because of the L+R glitch (Demonstration in threads below). If anyone wants to work on this run I'd be happy to collaborate. When did that start? Granted, I view the videos for entertainment, but that entertainment value is derived from the run being done as fast as possible. I won't say it has to be "perfect" per se (the definition of which has been debated), but if it wasn't done as fast as possible, and it's noticeable, I won't be entertained by it.

Let's not forget about the wicked-as-hell SMB3 and SMW runs that Genisto came out with a couple years ago. Entertainment first, pure speed second. One of those two runs was published. A run has to have both, but entertainment is the real key here. Think of how many runs have been posted that have been arguably 'really close to as fast as possible' but were rejected due to being unentertaining! Back on topic, this game absolutely deserves a run. Really awesome game. I'm super happy that there's one in the workbench, but it's not a modern-TAS-level run. Gotta frame advance it to perfection!

It's always been the case. I could go dig up a quote from Bisqwit about how he created the site with the idea of having it host all kinds of videos including things like machinima, if you like.

Of course, I think I learned that it can be difficult to combine speed, entertainment, and accuracy into a game that a player is trying to TAS. For that, I feel questioned as to whether or not this will go through. Although a lot of effort and countless weeks worth of input is placed into games like this, especially most RPG games that require extensive endurance (since most can take well over an hour to beat), I am still questioned. I enjoyed playing Ys: The Ark of Napishtim, but that's far beyond the SNES console. I really like to see this run, but I don't know if it's compatible with v1.43+ v15.4 lua 0.05

The submission text, at least how I read it, seems like you were purposefully sloppy with this run. If you can save ten or more seconds by doing something, or you admit you should have done other things but didn't, then why didn't you go back to fix such glaring mistakes? I mean, if it was a minor overlook or two after the fact, I could myself overlook it, but when you mention that you could have done things but didn't pretty much consistently throughout. If you're going to attempt something, at least do your absolute best. I'd suggest going back to plan your route and what you plan to do, then give it another shot. I'm currently not voting due to the fact that it wouldn't be fair because I haven't watched it yet (due to homework). I'm going to assume it's not that bad, but it needs sprucing up before it's ready for its next job interview, so to speak.

8.0/3.0 Despite being painfully unoptimized, I still enjoyed watching the run. Highlight was the suicide against the Harpy, akin to the current MM2 run... although in this one, you actually lose speed for it.
