I just realized something. When entering the building, would it be faster to crawl through the lower air duct instead of the second floor air duct? It would put you on the bottom floor, save a chaff grenade, and I'm sure that you don't have to skip a cutscene since it doesn't play if you took the bottom air duct inside.
No, unfortunately. The bottom airduct is significantly longer than the second floor one and features (iirc) a longer call with Master Miller, and even an underwater section. It was a nice idea anyway, thanks.

Heliport (SOCOM + second floor airduct) completed on Extreme. I'm going to take production of this run at a much slower pace than I did with the Hard run. I'm 90% sure I've maxed out the Heliport here in terms of my route. If any of you have suggestions/questions/potential improvements, feel free to post them here. I won't get upset :) (Yes, taking the lower duct is slower. See the last post.)

Up to (and including) Ocelot. This fight has been broken beyond recognition. For those of you unfamiliar with this boss fight, the process goes like this: the guy in the middle, Kenneth Baker, is trapped in a plethora of Semtex. If Snake crosses the yellow line, the C4 activates, killing Baker and triggering a Game Over. Ocelot will fire his magnum shots, and you're supposed to dodge them and then shoot him while he runs away to reload. I stand where I do in order to exploit a safety measure programmed in Ocelot's AI: Ocelot can never shoot or kill Baker, and if one of his magnum bullets looks like it will bounce off a wall and hurt Baker, it doesn't. Therefore I can stand in one place and fire at Ocelot on his optimal vulnerability frame while he barely misses me with his magnum EVERY SINGLE TIME. Of course, I lose some time when compared to the SDA run by not being able to shoot him optimally while he reloads, but the overall fight is faster. This method also saves a stun grenade, saving me another 10-15 seconds by not having to backtrack to the north side of the B1 entrance and grab some.

My newest WIP, up to (not including) the fight with Gray Fox. I took a faster route in the Nuke Building B1 and distracted the guard next to the chaff grenades with my footsteps.

I once saw a trick where Snake does not get guard's attention if he rapidly toggles item holding on and off (no, not holding down the L2/R2 for inventory). Even though it seemed noisy/annoying, it was useful to move around platforms that make footstep noises and get guard's attention. Try that and see how many frames you might get.

Yeah, I know about that trick. It's only useful on Disc 2 when you do the PAL key mission. It won't alert the guard. In Nuke Building B1, it doesn't matter because distracting the guard doesn't impede my progress in any way.

I apologize for not updating over the past few days. The past week has been hell and I'm fed up telling the same story over and over, so rest assured this is one of the lowest points of my short (19 years), spoiled, sheltered life. Still want movie progress? Gray Fox is technically finished but I'm doing further testing to see if I can genuinely luck manipulate his attacks. Stay tuned for the next inevitably-delayed episode.

Done a bit more. Like I said, progress will be slow due to life at home and me actually trying to be dedicated to my studies and such.

Are you still trying to deal with virtual CD image changing or did you manage to go into Disc 2?

I've spoken with mz and apparently burning the image onto a CD (and having PCSX read that CD) works. Of course, if all turns to shit I could just work from a savestate where it does work :/.

So during playback the emulator will pause and say, "Please insert disc 2," correct? I got that while doing a poor hacking job of a header earlier.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

Does utility like daemon-tools(lite version) could works better than real CD drive? Game like final fantasy can be annoying to have 3CD drive to eject/insert everytime. :)

I've been using Daemon Lite through the whole run and it refuses to switch discs properly.

Well, it wouldn't be a run by theenglishman if there wasn't at least one complete restart from scratch. And that's what's happened, again. A certain brazilianjoker over on YouTube posted an amazing run on February 2008 of MGS1, and somehow I missed it until today. I keep getting visions of a soccer-playing, nude-beach-attending Batman villain taunting me recklessly in Portugese. I highly recommend you see it here - a 1:49:01 Big Boss Emblem run, SINGLE SEGMENT, beating out the current SDA segmented run by a healthy five minutes. He's pulled off tricks I never even knew existed. I've contacted him via YouTube and now I have an unofficial cohort. You know what that means, folks? TOTAL RESTART!

I have nothing useful to add but a bit of encouragement. I'm extremely interested in this project and have been following it closely. This has a lot of potential, so I'm glad to see you giving it a serious treatment. I wouldn't expect you to restart it if you didn't think it would be worth it, so I'm excited to see where this goes. So that's really all I came here to say. Good luck, thank you for doing this, and keep up the good work.

Here's a peek at how some of the new route is going to work. It's a short little segment and nothing's changed until the heliport, but I'm proud with how it went. Thank you brazilianjoker :D

Another update. It's up to Ocelot, the second half of the boss fight is terrible and needs to be redone, but I'm satisfied with everything else. Currently about a minute ahead of brazilianjoker's run, which is saying more about him as a runner than me as a TASer :P Oh, and errror1, if you can get a full encode of this - my informant wants to see my run and can't get PCSX to run properly :P MAJOR UPDATE: I knew going in that I was one bullet short for the Ocelot fight, but I thought that I could grab one of the SOCOM refills during the fight without losing too much time. No such luck, so now I redid the last part of the Meryl fight so I save another bullet (13 for Ocelot) which is two seconds slower. Once I finish Ocelot properly I'll update again. EDIT2: Here's the updated PXM. Sorry for the crash at the end, I'll have that fixed next update. EDIT3: It's still crashing for some reason. I've always been able to override it in the past, but now I've lost 12,000 frames thanks to that. :( Okay, I'll keep working at it.

I'm sorry guys, this run has just been going at a snail's pace. I'm still stuck in the snowfield just before the M1 Tank trying to fix crashing issues. It's like nothing is working out for me anymore, and real life issues (which I don't want to discuss) are also getting in the way. Just consider this run in the seventh circle of development hell until I actually post something worthwhile. I'm trying my best under the circumstances, which just isn't saying that much right now :(

Beat the tank and I'm up to Nuke Building B1. I collected 3 extra chaffs between phases of the tank fight.

Perfectly understandable. Video games should take a backseat to real life at all times. Just go at whatever pace works for you, think nothing of it. It is far more important to deal with problems as they arise, don't feel bad about this, it's a part of life.

Gray Fox wants to be your bitch. Indulge his wish for suicide-by-Snake here. Lots of painful-to-plan luck manipulation and barely legal BDSM innuendo. ("Hurt me more! More! MORE!") I would certainly appreciate it if my favourite Texan encoder posted here too :)
