In depth about the run

This is my improvement over JXQ's 100% Super Metroid run, it is 2 minutes and 34 seconds faster than his version in realtime, or 9249 frames, and ~1 minute and 51 seconds faster ingame, or 6636 frames. Ingame clock stands at 00:36:03:43, yes I know, ouch :(
The 3 main improvements here are the torizo skip (21+ seconds) the mother brain stand up glitch (~15 seconds) and the routechange. Don't really know how much it saved though, due to trouble with comparing the routes completely, but it has 6 less doors and less backtracking, so maybe 10-15 seconds in realitime. The rest of the time is largely due to a lot of new room strategies, general optimization, and for realtime, minimizing door scrolling (without this I would actually have reached 00:35 quite easily...).
I have also made a alternative ending to this run, that removes the only pause screen, kills motherbrain without glitching, and saves the animals.
There is a excel spreadsheet formatted by hero of the day, in it are details on almost every room, some are left out due to the routechanges, and for the same reason it is not 100% accurate, but works good for room comparison and getting explanations for some of the things I do which might look a little (and in some cases maybe a lot) weird.

Information about authorship

As many probably know this started out as a team project between me and hero of the day. However, as he gained less and less time to work on the run I gained more, and in the end I did virtually all the work on the actual run, though hero still suggested ideas of improvements and new tricks, and the finial time would have been seconds higher without him. Thus he thought it would have been unfair to include him as an author of the run when submitting.

My two cents about what I presume will be the discussion about this run not having any input animation

Yes that is right, this run does not have any input animations, which I guess will gain me some no votes, but I had my reasons for not using them. I think the main reason they where so awesome in JXQ's run (besides him being an extraordinary comedian) was that the whole concept was new, it was the first run to use anything like that, naturally this run could not top that no matter what I would have animated. And since JXQ is a very funny guy I would have had little chance doing so anyway, and I think anything not as good as his work would simply be seen as redundant to the movie, and perhaps even as a bad attempt to copy his idea. Naturally I was not very eager to spend hours upon hours doing something that I predicted would be seen as mediocre, but I did actually start to add some input a bit into the run (some of which you can still see the bottom line of), and had a few thousand frames covered. It ended up in the trash bin though as I never really got very satisfied with them.
Also I hope that the main interest for most here is the run itself anyway... Oh well enough nonsensical rambling and bad arguments already.

Most of all hero of the day obviously, for figuring out a lot of improvements and new strategies, and it was more or less solely his work on improvements between the release of the last 100% run and the start of this one that made me do it at all.
JXQ, for making excellent runs. This would obviously not have been nearly as fast without his other runs to improve upon.
And pretty much everyone active in the Super Metroid thread during the brief times of peace (almost everyone has done something), you know who you are.

If anything you guys should be yelling at me for voting no. Which I did because I can't pay attention to SM runs but the animated one kept me awake... and this didn't. Good job though cpadolf, you are clearly a god among TASers!

As with all the other SM runs between you and hero of the day, I'm just going to vote YES so that the judges can collect the info and start trying to publish and encode. Now how's that for emphasis?! >:) I still don't have the right rom's and versions of snes9x to play the input movie, so hopefully a good AVI would show me the way. =)

Cpadolf, in general, how many frames does the blueball save compared to just bombing? Hard to tell since it's sort of circumstantial in the run breakdown, or it could just always be circumstantial, hrm...

It is completely circumstantial. The one that saved the least was probably the on in kraids lair when going to the E-tank, I think that compared to the otherwise best method it was only a few frames faster. But some of them saved over 50 frames like when going out from phantoons room, and the one in blue brinstar that saved around a second. Some times it is not faster at all, it depends.

re: ROM problems Filename extension should not matter, same with header/no header. The important bit is the checksum - the correct one is included in the SMV and it should be D63ED5F8. Use NSRT. Anyway, definitive YES vote. :)

Holy crap I forgot to vote. Watched this a while ago, and yeah with this run, Super Metroid is closing in on Super Mario World but SMW still makes a tiny bit better TASes. Still very very very well made. Quite obviously a yes vote.

Just a quick question for Cpadolf, Was the shinespark method of skipping the zebetites faster than the method using the screw attack? http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/926681232/Screw_The_Zebetites.smv Anyway, I like seeing the game done without using the pause screen and with saving the animals. I wouldn't mind seeing this one published over the other.

I don't really care one way or the other which one gets published. I really like the glitched MB fight, but no pausing is great, the shinespark to skip the zebites is cool and saving the animals is neat too. I'll leave this one up to the judges.

In a run which is over 1 hour long that doesn't seem like anything at all. If the 34 seconds longer movie adds significantly to the entertainment, I'd say it's a worthy price to pay. I suppose the only question is whether it adds so much to the entertainment or not.

It doesn't IMO. The only more entertaining part is the animal saving sequence, which is however pointless, since it doesn't contribute anything to the purpose of the run and takes more time for nothing. The one and only pause menu entrance to switch off the suits for the MB stand up glitch shown in the main movie isn't a bad thing as well, because it briefly shows the map, the design of the menu and all the special items Samus has collected over the run (a good identification that it is a 100% run). And most important of all, it shows the very useful Mother Brain Stand Up Glitch (saves a 1/4 minute, and a Murder Beam obsoletion), something no other run except the RBO would have the possibility to present. It adds more entertainment during the scene where the big Metroid joins, since you can move Samus freely instead of being forced in the same crouch position all the time. The only thing that gets missed that way is the final Hyper Beam phase of the fight, but that can be seen often enough in any other kind of run, like the any%s, or legit low% / 14% ones. Anyway, I finished encoding the main run for the TASvideos standard (with all descriptions / watermarks), and first time ever, with the glitched line fix (thanks to hero). All that of course with the best video/sound quality possible: http://www.archive.org/download/SuperMetroid_TAS_36_Cpadolf/supermetroid-tas-items100p-cpadolf.avi (158 MB) Feel free to link it to the publication as a alternative download to the torrent system. PS: If people really want to see the slower, alternate movie that saves the animals and skips the pause menu, then maybe it's worth another encode that could be added additionaly to the main movie, so that people could simply chose which run they want to watch.

If the two movies only differ in the last few minutes, would it be a bad idea to publish the shorter run as the official publication, and those differing last minutes as a separate bonus avi?
