About the run

Well folks, here it is, TASVideos first Sextuple TAS :) After I had finished about a year ago the Quadruple TAS with my dear friend Baxter, I felt I needed to do this to satisfy my curiosity. I decided to finish only 1 stage in each game because obviously you cannot slide in Mega Man and Mega Man 2. Mega Man and Mega Man 2 are much shorter games compared to the others. Mega Man and Mega Man 2 are 15-20 minute runs while the others are around the 30-minute range. So by the time I've finished Mega Man 3-6, the viewers would see 2 blank screens for several minutes, which is in my opinion bad. Also, this run is meant to be demo run. My initial aim was to finish all 6 bosses at the same time/frame so that it looks entertaining. However, as I progressed I realized that that goal became more and more unrealistic. You could fool around a lot of time so that other Mega Mans can catch up but I felt wasting so many seconds to satisfy my initial goal was a bit too much if you ask me. So, I revised my goal and aimed to finish all games as close as possible at the same time. In order to fully understand what the heck is going on, do not focus your eyes on any game. Instead, try to watch the center of your monitor. When I did this, I somehow felt it was easier to follow the progress than the Quadruple run, you decide! Anyway, to replay this run, follow these steps:
  • Open 6 FCEU's (all versions from 0.98.16 to 0.98.27 should work), and align them.
  • Load the games and pause them all.
  • Enable Background Input (at config), if it was already enabled when FCEU started, disable it first, and enable it again (it will automatically enable Run In Background).
  • Load the same movie file at all FCEU's (note that it will only give a correct ROM checksum for one of the games so do not worry about it).
  • Unpause (with a hotkey... background input will make all games unpause at the same time) and enjoy!
Please visit the submission text of the quadruple run to get a lot useful information of how certain techniques were performed in this run. I would like to thank Baxter for helping me setting up this run and most importantly, I would to thank... Myself! ^_^ O_o :)

Truncated: This is an interesting display of TASing skills, let's leave it at that. It is not so interesting to watch, according to the viewers. It has suffered the same criticism as the quad run, but with less of the good stuff.
Therefore, rejecting.

Playing Mega Man 1/2/3/4/5/6 at once is like going to an arcade game hall and hearing all the sounds of games from different angles. It's not a complete run, so it does take a lot more effort than that. Your run is great, however, that's not enough for me to give you a +. Take your time and understand what more you should pull from all six versions of Mega Man, and I'll consider you one of the ultimate gamers of TASVideos today. Until then, sorry, voting no.

this might even be a good time to put our collective foot down on multi-runs... what is awesome in 2 and fun in 4 might not be enjoyable in 6.

A very pleasant watch. :) Good work, Sir Angerfist.

We've had full games on a quad-run. Then we had one level on six games. Next, someone will make a movie that'll simultaneously play 60 games until right after the title screen? for the record, I voted no. Same reasons as stated on the quad-run and a few more that were already mentioned.

Finally, good job AngerFist :) your movie was a bit confusing but also really funny to watch from a good distance away from the screen when I tried to follow six blue bombers at the same time.. and that was my first time to hear six mega man game musics at the same time and it was a funny experience to hear that. I wonder what crazy you discover next, maybe you are going to combine NES and SNES emulators as a one and play mm1-7 and Rockman & Bass at the same time. I am not sure is it a good idea to publish this movie or not, but I think it doesn't matter at all.. keep up your work!

What I would like to see is more double-runs (which try to be even more awesome than the MegamanX/X2 run) instead of "how many games can you complete at the same time" runs. I seriously believe this is one area (ie. runs of multiple simultaneous games) where quality far exceeds quantity.

Shouldn't that be the case for everything?

Should and should. It's a matter of preference.

Turned out pretty much like I expected to, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'd like to watch this in 6.1 surround at some point, just for giggles. I'm all for it as a demo, just for the sheer madness. I'm more partial to the quad run in the end, but I certainly wouldn't complain over this movie existing. Now, how about completing Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat II simultaneously? :v
Kirby said so, so it must be true. ( >'.')>

Initially I wrote "sixtuple" but then I checked if it really is written like that and no, it's written "sextuple". I suppose someone could find something Freudian in that... Btw, another possibility would be "sexpartite", which is even cooler. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=sextuple

An impressive achievement, though a little hard on the eyes and ears. Would it be possible (at the emulator or .avi level) to pull a trick like Bisqwit did with klmz's SMB1 run and have different music playing with the sound effects intact? If it were, it would be nice to have an .avi with only 1 game's music output (or even MegaMan X's), with the sound fx from all. I've gathered that there are people on this site who are intimately familiar with at least the early MM's source code, so maybe ROM hacks to disable music in 5 of the 6 wouldn't be too hard? Just a random thought...
Would it not be better to manually encode separate audio tracks that the viewer can select/choose upon watching the video? Much like a DVD which can be dubbed into different languages, and audio commentary? It's quite some work to get it done, but then you can at least have all 6 games on the screen, but only sound from the one you are watching.

If you're turning off the music, it would be much easier if you alter the emulator itself, since there's practically no way to get rid of the desyncs otherwise.

But if you alter the emulator, you don't really have options besides enabling sound&music and muting it alltogether. Well, you could disable individual channels, but on NES, there are so few channels, that the sound effects are really just played on the same channels as the music. There's no way to distinguish between those, as it's the matter of the game code to produce them.

It was too chaotic to watch and the endings weren't nearly in sync enough to impress me. Sorry.

Well, obviously it would have to be tailored for each game. Since you're only dealing with 2 different engines in this case, it should be easy. In Mega Man 3-6 (and many other Capcom games), RAM location $CF holds the mask for the channels that are currently playing sound effects, and I don't know about Mega Man 1-2 but there is probably a similar variable somewhere. The emulator can then output the channel or not depending on the bits that are set.

Bisqwit uploaded a torrent of an avi he made, MM3 desyncs at the end but it's better than nothing ;) http://tracker.tasvideos.org/megaman1to6-tas-6gameswithsameinput-desynced-angerfist.avi.torrent

Can anyone encode the sound of this run? I have a desynch-free version of the run but without any sound.

So far I got the sound off Megaman I thru III and am currently encoding the sound for IV. /edit: *click* The soundstreams have variable length and thus would have to be cut to fit properly. The Megaman III sound had to be recorded with the Windows version, thus you'd also have to cut something from the beginning to make it fit
