Did you know that Super Mario Bros can be completed without pressing the B button while holding an apple on one's head the entire time? Just kidding; that is not possible. But this is an improvement to the famous Super Mario Bros walkathon.
It improves the previous publication by 7.4 seconds -- none of it thanks to recent glitch findings! 21-frame rule be damned.

Improvements level by level

8-2

This level was not improved by a single frame. None. Zilch.

Comments from the actors

Mario

Mamma mia! Someone should do something about the cannons in 8-3. They're dangerous!
Oh no, this was not what I expected when they promised to redo the movie. This time I was hunted by two Bullet Bills the entire duration of the 8-2 stage! I could barely look behind, and there they would always be looming! The cake Princess promised me better be good!

Koopa

Hammers are fun. I wish the next movie has a room made entirely of hammers. Bwahaha! Let's see how that idiot jumps past them then!!
*Makes a mental note to write a complaint to the industrial safety delegate. That lava prop juice is way too sticky.*

Luigi

I wasn't there!

Goombas 7 & 8

Did you spot us? We were in the beginning of 1-2! This is the first movie in which we were not stomped on by the hero! We made it!
Goomba 7: I think it was scary. Mario jumped straight above us and smashed a coin block. You have no idea how much noise those things make! I mean, you're watching us from, what, 50 meters? 100? I bet you heard it loud and clear even from that distance! And then there are Mario's feet. Huge feet that have seen millions of smashed goombas. And they make noise too! You'd imagine the smell would be the worst thing, but no, it is the noise. Good thing they're paying us a lot!

Princess

I hope they would write a love scene for Mario and me in the next movie. I mean, it must be quite astonishing sight for the audience to see Mario come rescue me after passing the obstacles elected by the friends of Koopa Bowser, but as an actress, my tasks for the role of the heroine are quite small. I wish I had more to do. I'm sure Mario would love it too.

EDITED: Replaced movie with a newer one! Improved by 202 frames! Plenty of thanks to AndrewG, the master of Super Mario Bros. speedrunning!
EDITED: Replaced movie with a newer one! Improved by 50 frames more! Plenty of thanks to Quietust, who made me feel fool! How fitting considering the day.%% EDITED: Replaced movie with a newer one! Improved by 20 frames more! Plenty of thanks to Bisqwit, who had doubts about some part of the movie.

adelikat: Accepting for publication as an improvement to the published movie.
Bisqwit: Reverting to 20 frames slower, but a lot cooler, version 4 and processing for publication.

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. Here goes! Feel free to clean up the list.

I don't personally care about the speed; I care about the visual performance. Does anyone agree with me? I'd like to revert to version 4
I noticed the thing you're referring to. I like 4 better.

If this improvement (which had gone unnoticed by me) does not do the "walks under the floor" glitch, I definitely say that the previous version should be published. It is such a big wtf factor that it's worthy of being slightly slower. Not to mention, it provides a great screen shot opportunity.

SoI don't really understand how version 5 is faster than version 4. So when you jump through the wall why do you immedately do a backwards jump out?

Actually there isn't. With "it lacks entertainment" I meant "this cannot entertain anyone", or a bit less drastically "this wouldn't entertain the vast majority of people". Provably many people find it entertaining. Thus you can't say it "lacks entertainment". Even if *you* don't find it entertaining that doesn't mean nobody does. Entertainment is subjective, after all.

Because acceleration by walking is slower than acceleration with a backwards jump. Once the required amount of screen not scrolling is achieved, it's only the matter of getting to the pipe as fast as possible.

This run... errr.. play changes the meaning of TAS. Can this still be called TAS ? Or should it be called TAP (tool assisited play) ?
Late reply from me, I think it's Tool-Assisted Superplay (see forum logo), I'm not sure where everyone getting "Tool-Assisted Speedrun" from tho.
It always amuses me how some people stick to that logo, as if it was some kind of definite proof. The forum didn't exist from the very beginning of the website. IIRC, the logo in question didn't exist from the very beginning of the forum either. It was made up later. The term "tool-assisted speedrun" is much older than this site. It was already used years before Morimoto did his first TAS. It was used in the Doom speedrunning community, it was called "TAS-Doom". They used a patched version of the Doom engine which allowed savestates and other tool-assistance. The first videos in this site were called "timeattacks", and the sole reason for this was because Morimoto called his videos that. It was later discussed that "timeattack" is a confusing term (which was very relevant at the time because the TAS community was widely accused of cheating, faking and creating hoaxes). The idea to use "tool-assisted speedrun" became precisely because that term had already been used for many years in the Doom speedrunning community for basically the exact same thing. It was an established and known term. For some reason some people have a great aversion to the word "speed", though, but that's another story, And as for this particular video, it *is* a speedrun. It simply uses a limitation for the sake of entertainment, but it regardless tries to complete the game as fast as possible, within this limitation, which is the very definition of speedrun. This is no different from eg. a "collects 100% iterms" run, where a limitation is imposed on the run for the sake of entertainment (but still, within this limitation, the run tries to complete the game as fast as possible). An example of a video which is *not* a speedrun is the MK2 video: It doesn't even try to complete the game as fast as possible.

With this fun reasoning and semantics, I've decided to say that every single submission that has received at least one yes vote ("Yes, I found this movie entertaining) cannot be labeled as "lacks entertainment". *sigh* I know of many movies that have been rejected for lacking entertainment, while still receiving yes votes though. I think I shall call this the Warp paradox, and pray a black hole is not formed when it is mentioned.

Why no screenshot with Mario inside the floor in 2-1? Spoiler prevention?
