Yesterday I played it competitively with 3 friends. We kinda went for pit as the best character for us. Maybe because we're noobs and flying is better than hitting in this situation, but pit always won. We're joining a championship which will probably be 4 players free for all on the first round and then 1v1 on the later rounds.

When I first read this post, I didn't think much of it. Then, I realized FODA lives in the most blessed place on Earth, Rio. At the risk of slightly derailing the topic, I have to follow up on this a bit; there are Brawl tournaments in Rio?? Do a lot of people come? Does everyone hang out at the beautiful beaches afterward? Is the gaming "culture" and people who go to tournaments different from the States? Somehow, I can't reconcile that in the land of BJJ, tremendous gang violence, insane drug trafficking, beautiful beaches, rich hotels, and gorgeous women, there also exist Brawl tournaments. I guess Rio is a microcosm of everything on Earth.

I was surprised to find a fairly lively community around denver, The idea of competing in actual tournaments never really came to mind until recently. This could turn out to be fun

I completed subspace emissary today, and, truth be told, was glad it was over. 10 hours of trying to beat the thing was a bit long IMO. In fact, I much preferred Adventure mode in melee. I think the whole "massive, game within a game" thing was a massive gimmick, especially since i had to fight every character, and every boss, in a massive maze of previously beaten levels for ~3 hours of my total playtime. Why did there have to be a maze, was it really necessary? I dont think so, and as such I have to say that the emissary is the worst part of the whole game.

I've honestly yet to touch SSE in all the time I've had the game. I've played through classic mode three times, and gone through several pairs of double-A's with human vs matches before deciding that rechargeable batteries would make a good investment. In truth, I think I've spent more batteries on a month's worth of Brawl than over a year's worth of... well, everything else I have on Wii. I'm starting to think I won't finish Prime 3 until I'm old and retired.
Kirby said so, so it must be true. ( >'.')>

I enjoyed SSE a lot more when I just thought of it as a Kirby game.

The thing is, most of the time you cant PLAY as kirby, or whoever you regularly play as. I admit, I beat adventure mode with all 25 characters in ssbm, but the whole adventure is as long one or two of the brawl levels... which means one or two brawl levels that I am forced to play with a sub-par character (ice climbers [although they have improved a little since melee])... I just dont like being able to pick my team, especially if the characters I am forced to use suck balls. Not to mention the story was boring XD

I cant complain too much. there are only like 3 characters that I really, really dont want to play as, and I liked that I was able to avoid it entirely. SSE is really not the strongest part of the game but it was amusing. All I really want to do it play Vs. against friends.

You forgot soccer as a way of life, everyone going to bars after work and weekend barbeques listening to samba. I don't like any of these, but I do go to soccer matches once in a while. If you're an adult in Rio who plays all sorts of videogames actively, the society will look at you as a nerdy kid who hasn't grown up. Unless you're just eventually playing winning eleven (pro evolution soccer), which everyone plays. It's hard to find a girlfriend who doesn't think that way lol... In São Paulo though it's easier, people are more geeky. But it's changing, the new generations are inevitably accepting videogame culture. About tournaments in Rio, it's a bit rare. Most tournaments are held in São Paulo, especially counter strike which is still popular. This one though is in Rio and requires no fee to enter. You go there and register right there. I think there'll be confusion... But the prize is 5 Wii games for 1st place (titles you can't choose), and he will fight vs the winner of the other tournament (one is on saturday and the other is on sunday) for a nintendo DS. I don't think I can win, but it'll be fun to participate in a tournament with people I don't know for the first time. It's that rare.

Getting back on topic: Today was the tournament. There were 400 people to play. It was free-for-all 3 minutes brawl with 4 players the whole tournament, with no items and random stages. I really shouldn't have trained as pit, he sucked pretty much there with free for all... I can't believe I won my first fight. The big winners were ike and kirby, but I went home after I lost so I don't know who won. So I won 1 fight and lost the next (losing = eliminated). :'(

I hate the new classic mode. There is absolutely no randomness to the levels to be played. Round 1: Zelda games, Round 2: Big Yoshi w/ diddy and dk, or diddy and dk versus you and yoshi, ect ect. The only randomness is whether or not you will play against wario or olimar [/dramatization] Another thing I hate is the stages... they simply are not as fun or interesting as Melee (I am looking at you, lack of a "new" hyrule castle). C'mon, a bridge? A fucking boat? I need a new temple level, but I guess I will have to play on the melee stage to get a fix :( The lack of an "automatic stage selector" is a downer, too. My friends and I only played on hyrule temple, so we had the stage automatically selected and only needed to press start to play at the level. now, unless I missed something, you have to select the stage you want to play every time. GRR! Target tests are not customized for the character anymore, just 5 stock levels that are nigh impossible for some characters. Ex: level 3, the lone bullseye that you have to hit with a projectile or Up+B, without falling down a small pit an dying. No easy feat for Ganondorf. All in all, I believe Melee is a better game. There seems to be more fluff and less action, so to speak... too much random shit gets in the way of enjoying the game as easily as Melee. Added to the fact it took me 2 weeks to beat classic with all characters (12 rounds +2 target tests are a bit much for 37 characters [3 pokemon included]).

After you unlock every stage you can set which stages are on/off for Random, and you can also turn on Auto-Random. So you can only turn on the one stage you want and then set it to auto-random and it'll do what you want.

The Target Tests actually force people to adapt to the same scenario with different people, rather than just having them try their hand at one static level. Along with this, every stage has tiny alterations to them that allow everyone to beat them speedily using a unique moveset. For example, the target you're mentioning in Stage 3 can be handled fairly easily with a Warlock Kick. Furthermore, the challenges are meant to be something that you chip away at over time. The fact that it took you two weeks to put in something to the tune of 6 or 7 hours of work on one facet of the game (which I would say entails less than 15% of its appreciable content) tells me that you're playing the game an awful lot as it is. Are you one of those people that lets the CPU play hour long matches while you're asleep so that you can get the 100 Brawl Hours challenge completed? It totally defeats the purpose of being a system of checkpoints that you complete over a long period of playing the game, thereby adding a bit of longevity to the game. If you're going to just play the game to beat the challenges before doing anything else, you're going to lose interest in the game once you have everything unlocked and collected.

Heh, I did the one hour thing... ~twice, total, for both Melee and brawl. Once in brawl for unlocking something <character/map or something. [I don't remember, since I just played through subspace to unlock whatever it was]> and to unlock Mewtwo in Melee. Aside from that, nope, I don't leave my system on... and yes, I do wsh to beat the TTs, Classic, Subspace and All Star with every character (or, in subspace's case, 100% goals). After the fit of addiction (must beat this, and must beat it now) I will rarely pick it up again... unless for multiplayer. Speaking of multiplayer, the lag for online sucks my balls. I don't think it is my connection, either, since my wii is connected directly to my router.

Heh, I love this game. Sure, it's less competitive than Melee, but the reduced technical demand is in my favor since I suck with overly technical things. What makes me happy: G&W RAPES in this game. As for Target Smash, unbelievably, I like Brawl Target Smash more than Melee Break the Targets. I seriously think it's better to have five different stages that every character can access. I mean people already have completely different physics backing them up, so no two characters will have the exact same strategy for any given stage.

What are you talking about? There isnt any lag at all. I've played against people with a 6 year old dial up connection. 5Mbps! As for the rest of Brawl, the only flaw I can think of is a bit of loading lag, and not that smart AI for the Cruel Brawl plast about 35 enemies defeated.

You're incredibly lucky then. It seems everyone else, including my roommate, has lag issues.

Maybe the people that you are playing against have bad internet connections. If these people you are playing against are friends, you can see what quality of internet connection they seemed to have the last time you played with them by looking at the color of rectangle that holds their names. If you are playing against random people, one bad connection could ruin everybody's gaming experience since the game intimates that everybody's game will pause if somebody lags.

He does? I'd say he's gotten worse. Sure, his new downsmash is great (although its range and speed is still horrible), his new downthrow is excellent (although you can roll away before he can hit you), and taunting when getting that juicy #9 is kickass, but the loss of his best aerial (the parachute) and it getting replaced by a barely usable splashing-thingie hurt his edgeguarding, KO'ing and antiair abilities, losing the board (the downtilt) made his ground game suffer (it got crappy knockback now, and it doesn't feed straight into his (previously) great nair or, if you're feeling lucky, a judgement #9), and the improved recovery is hardly enough to push him above those flaws. He's still great fun to play, though. Guess I should've split that paragraph into more parts.

It's not as though you'll get a failing grade on your post, requiring you come back and write it again in the summer. :p I've never been much of a G&W player in the first place, and I don't think I'll be picking him up anytime soon. Instead, I've stepped away from my swordies to pick up Kirby once more (yay!) and beat my friends senseless with Metaknight. Then again, Metaknight also fights with a sword. As does Kirby, technically... I suppose I haven't stepped quite so far out of my comfort zone afterall.
Kirby said so, so it must be true. ( >'.')>

Since this topic has gone from, "Let's praise Brawl!" to, "Let's nitpick it!" I'll throw in yet another pet peeve I have. Whenever you suicide, the last person to have attacked you gets a point. What the heck.

KO points are pretty lenient compared to SD points. In order to get an SD, you can't have taken direct or indirect damage in a notable period of time (10 seconds maybe?) and you can't die by being knocked back by anything hazardous in general. So yeah, it more or less gives them the point if they somehow recently contributed to your death. When my house plays, if a 2 person 1 life situation ends with a Smash Ball, we will sometimes kill ourselves to keep the winner from their last KO.
