I'll have to disagree with that. I think it is a bit ambiguous.
Maybe "2-player mode"? (Similarly, "3-player mode" and "4-player mode"). "Mode" refers directly to the game, not the authors. As an aside, we should emphasize that authors are authors, not players. To say that an author is a player is like saying that making a TAS of a game is playing the game. Sure, we could say that we are "playing around" with the game.

Sonic 2 has a two player mode, but the latest run plays single player mode. The run also uses tails, a second character. Your category does not work for this game. What do you use instead?

Does "uses" means "controls"? Or is tails controlled by the computer?

...Have you really not watched either Sonic 2 or S3&K lately? Wow. Regardless, both Sonic and Tails are controlled with two controllers. Both have a two player mode but this is not used.

I don't understand. It doesn't use the 2-player mode, but still controls two characters simultaneously with two controllers? How is that not 2-player mode?

Tails is controlled by the computer up until the second controller sends some input to the game, at which point he's put under the control of that controller. Edit: post made irrelevant by people camping the forums and chain-responding to each other after I'd loaded the "post reply" page.

Ok, but I still don't see how that is not 2-player mode.

Because there is a dedicated two-player mode which is different to the single-player mode in almost every possible way. It is a two player mode of sorts (although 2p can come in and out of play whenever he wants), but not the two player mode.

Sonic 2's (and 3's, for that matter) two-player mode is split-screen competition. There are always two characters playing, the AI never takes control of anything. The one-player mode has the option of being just Sonic, just Tails, or Sonic with Tails controlled by the AI, though if any button is pressed on the second controller, the second controller controls Tails until he slides too far off screen. The game's title screen refers to this mode as '1-Player', so it is considered thus.

Then how do we put forth the information that the author controls Tails also? Currently we use the category "One player controls two characters"..

That isn't misleading, is it? Unless it should be indicative of the second character only being controlled in isolated moments through the run.

The rather strong tag called "uses 2 controllers" would solve that (Sonic) problem, even though it might introduce other problems.

I have noticed some incoherences and omissions regarding the tags of certain movies. - Genre: *[836] GBA Metroid Fusion "0%" by Dragonfangs in 1:13:26.73 has the action, adventure and platform genre tags, while [1234] GBA Metroid Fusion "100%" by BioSpark in 1:35:49.53 has only the action and platform genre tags. - Non-fastest completion goals *[779] Genesis Sonic 3 & Knuckles "Knuckles, 100%" by upthorn in 45:28.60, [1019] SMS Sonic the Hedgehog 2 "best ending" by mike89 in 18:44.28, [1656] Genesis Sonic 3 & Knuckles by nitsuja, upthorn & marzojr in 29:51.20, [597] GBA Sonic Advance 3 by nitsuja in 35:56.75, [600] Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by nitsuja in 19:55.43, [1401] Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog by FuzZerd, upthorn & carretero in 15:51.73 and [1665] GBA Sonic Advance by Mukki in 10:46.52 are missing the "Aims for in-game time instead of real-time" tag. - Categories *[1387] Genesis Sonic 3 & Knuckles "Sonic, 100%" by marzojr in 55:48.80 and [1656] Genesis Sonic 3 & Knuckles by nitsuja, upthorn & marzojr in 29:51.20 are missing the "Uses a sub-optimal character" tag. - Using/Avoiding time-saving techniques *[600] Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by nitsuja in 19:55.43 is missing the "Heavy glitch abuse" tag. *[468] GBA Sonic Advance 2 by nitsuja in 18:44.97 is missing the "Takes damage to save time" tag. Regarding [597] GBA Sonic Advance 3 by nitsuja in 35:56.75, the author didn't aim strictly for fastest in-game time, but he didn't aim for fastest real time either. Having into account that fastest in-game time has a higher priority than fastest real time in his goal list, I think that adding the "Aims for in-game time instead of real-time" tag to this movie is better than not doing so, which might lead viewers to think that the run aims for fastest real time, which is the default and would be wrong in this case. Therefore, I have added said tag. If you think that this needs more discussion, let me know.

#2009: computerbird's GBA Megaman Zero 3 in 58:00.98 is missing the Genre: Action Category that all other Megaman Zero TASes have. I the same case is for #2626: FractalFusion's PSX Mega Man 8 in 47:06.23 and #2653: Noxxa's PSX Mega Man X6 "all stages" in 41:18.38. I also think that this TAS: #2727: Bag of Magic Food's GBA Mega Man Battle Network in 55:40.65 should have the Action Category. And for #2760: computerbird's GBA Megaman Zero2 in 50:54.88, it has a Contains speed/entertainment tradeoffs Category, but it doesn't have anything related.

Thank you for your help, Rolanmen1. I have fixed all but one (which was fixed by Sonikkustar). I suspect that several movies are missing tags, so I would like to ask TASVideos' members for help; if you have any movies published on the site, could you check them to see if all is correct and report in their respective submission topic any omission or mistake that you find? If you don't have any published movies but are familiar with certain games, your help would be appreciated as well.

[1558] NES Super Mario Bros. 3 "warpless" by adelikat, andymac, Lord_Tom & Tompa in 47:04.70 <- has the heavy glitch abuse tag [1484] NES Mario Adventure by andymac in 49:42.39 <- doesn't have the heavy glitch abuse tag, even though it uses more glitches (and more frequently) than the other movie. I think either remove the heavy glitch abuse tag from the first movie, or add it to the second should resolve this.

It's been added to the second movie.

I propose a new category: Abuses randomly generated levels It is for submissions that take advantage of manipulation of randomly generated levels to drastically make the game much shorter. A starting list of things to include in the category would be this:

I like the tag, but at the same time, I think that would be covered under "Heavy luck manipulation."

Yeah, I also think that luck manipulation covers that.

http://tasvideos.org/368M.html "Aims for maximum score" should be removed, because doing so actually costs time and it isn't a good tag for such a game where you have to keep moving. On the other hand, maybe "Contains speed/entertainment trade-offs" should be added because the author stated that he was showing off some things you can do in the game. I think the next TAS of this game will avoid this however, to speed things up.

[1135] SNES Super Demo World: The Legend Continues "all 120 exits" by Chef_Stef in 2:08:01.68 As I say, this run should add "100% Completion" as another category because this run completes the game fully just like in this run.

Why is this thread being used to complain about movie tags (not) applied to a specific movie?! Go post this stuff in the movie threads themselves. This is a discussion about movie tags (and their applications) in general.

Perhaps we should have a thread for exactly these types of reports (and all the reports here moved to that thread). If any editor is watching and applying the corrections, it will be significantly easier to notice them when they are all collected into one single thread rather than being scattered around.
