Let me ask you one question: Do you understand *why* bittorrent has been chosen as the distribution channel for these avi files? It has nothing to do with being "geeky" or anything like that. It's a practical thing.
Another question: Do you understand why most sites which offer direct downloads are made so advertisement-ridden and overly complicated? And do you understand why these complications are a deterrent to many people?
Hint: The short answer to both questions is "money".
I understand what you're saying, but money becomes an issue if things go bad or if certain things did not meet consumer demands. That should be what customers are for.
Symbolic X, if you're advocating direct downloads instead of BitTorrent, that's fine and dandy. But how about you start uploading the existing encodes to archive.org, to help others receive the needed direct links and all? Otherwise the forum rants lose credibility pretty quick, because I don't understand what're you arguing here when you've been already presented with a working solution.
Anyway, would I be allowed to post those links in the "published movies" forum, in the relevant threads? Since a link on the main page isn't going to come...
Hang on a minute here.
Bisqwit has as much as said he doesn't want the site associated with sites like megaupload or rapidshare.
Shouldn't the authors of the runs in question at least be contacted to ask for permission before uploading their works.
For what it's worth, I don't want my runs being hosted on rapidshare or megaupload. I will, however, authorize them being hosted on filedropper and archive.org

Desyncs aren't a matter of luck manipulation; they can happen whether that is used or not. They shouldn't happen, however, if you use the correct version of the emulator and the correct rom (and you will usually be warned when loading a movie file for the wrong rom). What movies have you had problems with?
I won't until I hear back from Bisqwit, because of this:
Bisqwit said he won't add a link on the main movie pages, but this can't prevent mirrors from being posted in the forum pages, this is something that always happened, including both mirrors and youtube links. However, in this particular case, since I'd need to do a "mini postwhoring session" of more than 20 messages, I thought it was better if I asked.
I don't think so, but since you're still being a pussy over the Megamix episode I deleted your movies from Rapidshare because I don't like to see people crying over nothing.
Seriously, what's the big deal with you? I'm trying to help here. And I wish I could help more, but people like you are preventing people who can't use torrents to get the movies.
I have nothing against you, and I always thought your TASes to be amongst the best ones (check the rates I gave if you don't believe me), now you're just randomly hating me. And I can see where this is going to go, you are a respected big wig, I am the newbie, everyone will kiss your ass, I will get banned. Life is wonderful.
No, he hates me because I leaked a private beta of Sonic 1 Megamix, a hack on which he was working. He made that clear several times also on the #retro irc channel.
No. I hate you for being a hypocrite (as you'll do if you post stuff on rapidshare without author's permission), and pretending that you're not responsible for your own actions (as you did when confronted about the megamix leak).
The megamix leak itself I didn't care about at all. It's just your attitude about the whole thing, combined with the fact that you've decided to drag the stinking corpse of that drama here with you.

On a related note, I'm still trying to download the AVI for Knuckles' Chaotix since a couple of weeks ago but I keep on getting no peers.
Now I really wish that someone else uploaded it on Rapidshare :(
Bisqwit should start automatically seeding the movie at a low level if you stick around for a few minutes. Every published movie on the site should be available via BitTorrent regardless of how many "real" people are currently seeding.

If I'm not constantly watching what happens to the torrents I'm seeding, I might be actually doing more harm than good: I'm being seen as a seeder, but I'm not uploading anything (for whatever reason).

It's not a question of how easy or hard it is to enable javascripts (it's very easy with NoScript). It's a question of why such a site would demand javascripts enabled, given that the only thing you want to do is to download a single file. That's always suspicious.
I assume you know a way to implememet a similar countdown timer using plain HTML.
Anyway, RAPIDSHARE is crap & MEGAUPLOAD is twice the crap. They're good for hosting warez and that's all.
BitTorrent is another trash torrent program that people are trying to exploit (a friend of mine had a nasty problem with some BT.someting file, that came along with some mmorpg -- that could be just a name coincidence, yeah, but I still hate the program's interface itself)). I hate torrents and when I really need to use them, I use µTorrent .
Unless someone has some spare online storage space to host all these videos and extreme bandwith to share them...(like archive.org) it's best to keep things the way they are.
This discussion is pointless, and I dunno where are the moderators who didn't lock this thing yet.

Sephiroth: BitTorrent is a protocol, not a program. BitTorrent clients, like muTorrent (or I guess you could pronounce it "microTorrent") or Azureus, implement the protocol.
I guess you could have a program, called BitTorrent, that implemented the BitTorrent protocol. But that would just be confusing.

Since no one gave me feedback about the mirrors I set up, I guess there's nothing else I can do here. Sorry for all this mess, I was just trying to contribute.
I have a very good upstream, but I don't have an account on archive.org, I tried to read about it in the FAQ but it's so complicated...
I'm willing to do that if someone gives me a nudge in the right direction :)
OK, signing up for an account is as easy as email address + username + password. I don't know what the deal is with getting it tagged or whatever (that's probably from forever ago?) but you can upload a couple and see what happens... anyone around who's in the know about this whole process?

Go to archive.org.
In the top right corner, you'll see an option to sign up or log in. Click on "Sign up".
You'll be asked for typical info (email, password, username, etc). Once you're signed up, return to archive.org.
Make sure you're logged in, and click on the "Upload" button in the upper right corner. Fill in all the information requested, and click upload.
I uploaded one of my runs, and used the name "Spider-Man 3 for GBA in 15:38.73by mmbossman", and made sure the description indicates sometime about the movie being a TAS, and that it uses savestates and slowdown to push the game to its limits.
After your file has finished downloading, copy the link location and PM me (or another judge or publisher), and they'll update the publication page.
EDIT: Take a look here for what I did for my first upload.
