To run it from the hbc, you need the entire folder, including the icon.png, and meta.xml, which needs to go in sd:\apps\CleanRip\

So if my movie syncs on both the perfect dump and the nearly-perfect, widely-available dump, then I guess I don't have to worry about people being unable to play back my movie despite not owning the game. And if something like that happened anyway, they will always have the encode to watch. OK, I'll start working on Chapter 1 then.

Interestingly, the perfect dump compresses to 1.12 gb, whereas the other was 335 mb.

That happens because the actual game content is around 335 MB. The rest of the disk is filled with random data which compresses poorly. GC ISO releases were "scrubbed", ie: this filler data was replaced with some blank data in order to be better compressed. The did you did yourself obviously has no such a thing, so it compresses much less.

If you're planning on uploading it somewhere, it might be a good idea to post the MD5 on the download page, so people like me won't have to download half a dozen ISOs only to find that they're all the same bad dump.

I would assume the reason he dumped the game was so he could play it on Dolphin, since he was helping me with the Paper Plane part and testing playing back my movie file on his own copy of the game.

Nice prologue CoolKirby. I'm subscribed to see more ^^ I saw the first part of the Jap guy's TAS some weeks ago and it didn't seem very optimized so I thought I'll TAS this game when my console speedrun is finished. However I'm busy so it would take very very long to proceed and now that I found your video and this thread I guess it's better not to start at all. I already had downloaded the (fixed) ISO so I was able to see the pattern of the Pianta Parlor slots. Reading this thread it seems like there are a lot of issues and I would get impatient and probably stop lol. Luckily you found Miles's route, so far it seems to be the fastest way to complete the game with minor fixes (like the Gate Handle trick). Of course you can manipulate luck with the audience throwing necessary items where you could probably save time? Anyway best of luck with your run, I'm really waiting for more =D ps. I'm vatipaa on youtube, hopefully you get tips from my videos for your run

In the newest Dolphin revisions, there aren't any more emulation issues, except for the Paper Plane being about double its size on a real GameCube, and some textures being covered with black polka dots, but those are minor graphical issues and don't affect gameplay.

The Gate Handle trick makes the game freeze every time you try it, right? I guess I won't be able to use that trick.

I've been keeping up with your speedrun, and they do help me out with my run. Good luck on the rest of it! Also, I'm looking forward to seeing the final time of your run, as it will help me get an estimate for how long my run will be.

Haha I finished my run early this month but uploaded the final Chapter today. I finished the game with 6:18. It wouldn't be the Dolphin issues to make me stop, rather all the precise little things like for example the dialogue thing with Lord Crump. It sounded like something frustrating for me. But that's what TASes are about; I'm prob not a TASer-kind myself =) The game freezes if you use the Gate Handle too early but not if you collect it too early. Getting it on your way after entering Pirate's Grotto saves a lot compared to getting it after the Boat Curse. I'm sure you can aim easily below 6 hours, my Chapter 8 itself had about 2-3 minutes of error in total and not the rest of the run was perfect either. At many points like Power Bouncing for example I wished I could TAS it to make things easier. Your optimized moving saves you seconds all the time so subbing 6 hours wouldn't be a problem. Too bad this game doesn't have any major glitches where you can skip an entire Chapter. On another note it's a good thing but you need to spend 6 hours to watch a run of this <_<

Oh, wow! I didn't even check to see if you'd uploaded those parts. I have to watch those now. :D 6:18 is a good time; that's two minutes faster than Miles predicted when he made the route. It looks like I'll reach my goal. Yeah, text isn't too hard to optimize, and movement isn't especially bad either. Pipes, falling, and Paper Plane flying are all pretty annoying to work with, but if you take your time, they can be optimized too (or as close to it as possible). The only thing I'm dreading to work on is the Creepy Steeple spiral staircase. I have to use three different sets of input each time I go up or down it (ascending with Yoshi, descending without Yoshi, and finally ascending without Yoshi) and I'm going to have to change Control Stick angles nearly every frame. I wish there were some major glitches too, but since there aren't any that I know of, I'll keep running the whole game.

I realized a few days ago that I could use some of the frames I have to waste in the Prologue entertaining after the Blooper to save some time later on. Instead of getting the P-Down, D-Up P in Boggly Woods in Chapter 2, I can use about 45 frames to get the hidden Pretty Lucky badge in Rogueport Sewers, and still make it to the Blooper in time to cross the floating platforms. So I've mostly been working on that. I also found something else - walking at two different directions through an area instead of walking straight right can save a few frames. For example, walking at 255,105 (right and slightly down) and then moving the Control Stick halfway through to 255,155 (right and slightly up), I save 3 frames in the first area of Petal Meadows over walking straight right (255,128). And the second area (with the Goombas to avoid) is faster by 5 frames by moving at 255,70 and then changing to 255,155 a third of the way through. It's weird that this saves time, and I can't explain why it does, but since it does save time, I will use it!

Just how manipulable is the RNG in regards to Lucky badges, I wonder? If it's easily controllable, it might come in handy at certain points. (My immediate thoughts are the Fuzzies in the areas with the key, as dodging and skipping their attach animations might end up being faster than waiting for them to attach so you can super-counter them. Assuming, of course, you can't take them out in one turn.)
First a movie gets submitted, and ends up accepted despite breaking rules other runs have been rejected for. And when I vote less than spectacularly on this movie, I become the victim of harassment and threats. Yay, favoritism.

I wonder, too. Since I don't think taking the time to equip Pretty Lucky will pay off (I'll be selling it at the beginning of Chapter 3), I will have to see if it's possible to get a "Lucky" without equipping any Lucky badges. Also, I tested the floating platform in the first area in Rogueport Sewers and it can be jumped across with very precise timing: If only I could save about 100 frames in the beginning part of the Prologue, I could make it across the platform in time. I'll have to add that as a possible improvement for now though.

Does that mean you have to go back to the Prologue, save those 100 frames, and work your way back to Chapter 1 again?

No, the problem is that I can't find 100 frames to save before the floating platform. If I could manage to save them, then I would definitely go back and save them, but it looks like I can only save about 10 frames in the beginning part (due to re-syncing the movie), which doesn't waste any time because I have to wait for the floating platform to move anyway. Right now, I'm testing whether I can get the Pretty Lucky badge and save frames before the Blooper battle, or get all the way there only to find that the platforms appear in the same place as in the current run. EDIT: So I re-synced all the way to the Blooper and directly after, and the platforms appeared in the exact same place they did before. I even tested this by pasting my old input after my new movie, and the moonwalking and jumping on the platforms was exactly the same, except Mario enters the pipe 43 frames later. I checked Miles and NamiNami's speedruns, and the post-Blooper platforms appear at exactly the same time as in my runs. This means no matter how much I improve the Prologue, I will always have to wait the same amount of time for the platforms to move, since they appear in the same (bad) position every time the game is played and Blooper is defeated. So improvements after the hovering platform in the first area of Rogueport Sewers really do count. This also means getting the hidden badge in the Sewers is out; getting the badge will only make Mario enter the pipe 3/4 second later. I did manage to save some frames from the Sewers, so I'll edit in the improvement (since it matters now) and re-sync my movie again.

will the badge save more time to grab now than later? or is there another badge that is on the way that you can get the same affect with? you might have to see which one would be more effective. seeing as you will most likely be skipping a lot of the battles, there would most likely be a quicker badge to grab on the way to the (sub)boss.

The other option is the hidden badge block in Boggly Woods (P-Up, D-Down P), on the way to the blue switch that raises the Paper Plane platform there. I was going to see if I could skip hitting that switch and fly the Plane to the other side without raising the platform. If I manage to skip the switch, then grabbing the badge here will definitely be faster (trading 43 frames for almost 30 seconds), otherwise the Boggly Woods badge would be faster to get.

if you can make the distance without making the platform go up it would make the TAS all the more cooler, plus having the extra damage on all of your attacks should help you save even more time. fingers crossed it works

I did some testing and I don't think it's possible to skip the blue switch. The Paper Plane flight starts too low to cover that great of a distance without losing elevation. Tilting forward moves the Plane forward, but tilting backward pretty much stops the Plane's horizontal movement. In every attempt I made to fly to the platform, the Plane would be almost touching the ground when I wanted it to land atop the platform. I also have not been able to jump from the top of the gray pipe into the path that leads to the blue switch, so I don't think any shortcuts can be done for that area. So getting the hidden badge in Boggly Woods turns out to be fastest after all. I'll save whatever time I can from the second half of the Prologue and then continue Chapter 1.
