Wow this is offtopic... but oh well. :P I have to agree too. Speedruns that are blazingly fast are interesting if you have an understanding of the game (and the specific mechanics used in the speedrun) already, but otherwise, the blazingly-fast-ness is kinda boring. Entertainment is accessible for anyone though. I found this movie and was well entertained, even though I hardly know anything about DI: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jBBZk_7EWE This is the sort of stuff I wouldn't mind going from game to game watching, even if I have no idea what the game is much like. Speedruns tend to be much less interesting to me, even if I know they're impressive. ::edit:: and naturally, the video doesn't seem to be working right now... ;>_>

What is 'Concept Demos' for again? Maybe it should have an expanded role, but it's there.
I was under the impression that the concept demos section was supposed to disappear, so making it bigger would be a bad idea.

If the player presses away from the door on the last possible frame before entering a black room transition, I guess that it never counts as she leaves the first room, and game over. I managed to do this in real time last night as well, so it doesn't demand too much of the player.

I'm not sure if that counts as an actual freeze. A freeze is only when the sound stops as well (such as in that Kabuki - Quantum Fighter video). I actually froze Super Mario Land 2 by using a glitch, a video of which I'll post soon...

Let's not get in to a debate about what a "freeze" is. Can we just agree that a "freeze" is where a player is in a situation wherein he/she cannot possibly unstick the game from whatever event loop it is in, and a "crash" is where the game's coding somehow becomes fucked up you get a sort of memory error or overload or bad command or something?

You could say that the video has frozen. Sounds like a freeze to me.

It's possible to freeze many games without killing the sound. On the SNES especially, where the sound is handled by a seperate processor entirely. If you hit a BRA $FE, I'd say you frozen the game well enough.

Fun fact: Widget doesn't actually crash when this happens. Hold down fastforward long enough and the game will eventually continue as normal when the invalid hurt sequence is finished. Edit: I've got an obscure one. Back when I played Action52 for the first time, I tried to beat The Cheetahmen and I found a "Level 10" glitch. You could fall down a certain pit in level 5 that would take you to a warp zone with a 1-up, but exiting that warp zone would take you to... a glitched world that would lock up the game if you went too far. Well, that entire cartridge was just one big glitch anyway. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/116880226/TEH_CHEETAHMEN.fcm

Here's a video of me crashing Super Mario 64. Not a speedrun, but it's pretty funny. CAUTION: this video really strains the emulator, so it will most likely desynchronize. If it doesn't crash at the end, simply run forward towards the snowman. Then the game will freeze for sure. http://uploader.polorix.net//files/347/m64%20crash.m64 Don't complain if it doesn't work. This is a major glitch that strains the hardware. I duplicated the hats in the background until the N64 couldn't take it. This is possible on the actual N64, which freezes much sooner. This also works on the Wii virtual console, which results in a total freeze of the Wii software (i.e., I need to unplug the Wii to turn it off). This is also possible on the DS, which multiplies the hats rather than duplicates them.

I find that funny. And judging from someone I pasted it to, he finds it funny as well. Strange, isn't it? (For my two cents on the old matter, freezing is where the game cleanly locks up, crashing is when corruption of sound/video/etc occurs and the game freezes.)

"Fastest crash" speedruns have seen some popularity on nicovideo lately, so I wanted to make a post here now. Although I'm kind of late... What constitutes a "crash" or a "freeze"? The freezes in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland can also be counted as "soft locks" (which would be the mildest kind of game crash). Are Unwinnable situations softlocks as well? That aside, I wanna put some notes here.. If you wanna know details about something, PM me here or on youtube. Maybe someone knows better (or more) about a game than me, which would be interesting. Super Mario Land 2 -Can be crashed within a few seconds, with the pause glitch. -Can otherwise be crashed if you go out of bounds and crush stuff in the ROM area or something. Kirby's Dream Land -I don't know how to freeze this game. But you can probably make it unwinnable with a glitch. The Smurfs (GB) -I don't know how to freeze this one. One glitch at the dragon boss would almost make it unwinnable but you can just kill yourself and re-try. Kirby & The Amazing Mirror -Can be softlocked with the glitch shown in the video linked above in this post. I haven't been able to do it in an earlier room, can't clip into walls. -Can be frozen with a recent glitch I found, in the first Dark Kirby battle. -Can be softlocked with a glitch that happened to SirVG in the Dark Mind 5 battle. -Can be frozen/crashed with a glitch in the Dark Mind 6 battle. -It may be possible to softlock with the Cook glitch. Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland -Can be softlocked when Kirby uses Crash a few frames after jumping out of water. -Can be crashed and frozen if you press up+down on the battle against Nightmare's orb. Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga (Mario & Luigi RPG) -Can be made unwinnable in many ways, using glitches that involve wall clipping. -Can be softlocked in the Hoohooros battle when one of the brothers learns his advanced move while Hoohooros is also attacking. (I guess that would be the earliest point where you can screw the game) -Can be frozen/crashed with the Mini Mario glitch. -Maybe many more possibilities to freeze the game, idk Kirby Super Star Ultra - You can freeze(?) the game early in Dynablade when you enter a miniboss while using Suplex(?) on an enemy. It never worked for me on every version of the game (JP, EU, US, Desmume and DS Lite). Kirby Squeak Squad -The only way I know to screw this game is to clip out of bounds with Ghost kirby in a certain level and then switch to Sword and use final cutter(I believe?). You will be stuck at the bottom of the screen forever. (But because it requires Ghost Kirby it means you have already beaten that level so you can exit) -One glitch involving also Ghost Kirby is supposed to freeze the game when you possess Uja (the enemey that resembles Masterhand). But it doesn't work for me and I haven't seen footage of it so I believe it is false information. -Maybe you can wall clip with Ghost Kirby and get stuck out of bounds (only on the Japanese version, because when they translated the game they changed how out-of-bound walls are made up). (But because it requires Ghost Kirby it means you have already beaten that level so you can exit) Super Smash Bros Melee -The fastest way I've seen on nicovideo is using Name Entry Glitch in Break The Targets. -Game can otherwise be frozen in many different ways: -- Put party balls, green shells on VERY HIGH; choose Final Destination and place two Foxes on each side and reflect shells until the game eventually freezes due to too much stuff going on. -- Some way in training mode, involving putting many bob-ombs or red shells in a pit out of blocks in Green Greens, then attacking that spot. -- Homerun Contest over the limit, either the sandbag reaches the right end or the lower end. The game can't process what happens if the sandbag reaches the border of the level. -- So-called Soulbreaker glitch with Mewtwo can lead to a freeze -- A glitch that I found, which involves using Fox' up-b under the wooden bridge diagonally up left in Adventure mode. -- As Link or Young Link, kill Masterhand or Crazyhand with a thrown bomb while being grasped to freeze the game -- Possibly many more Kirby Super Star -Crashed by using up+down on a ladder, earliest doable in Great Cave Offensive. I tried to improve by going to the ladder in Gourmet Race #2 but it takes longer. -Otherwise, you can softlock the game with opposing directional input while Yoyo Kirby to make Kirby disappear forever. I don't know if the game allows you to leave the game mode or not, though. -Opposing input while in Milky Way Wishes' overworld -A crash glitch that I can't remember well. 0xwas should know about this. In Milky Way Wishes, in a previously beaten level, get Sleep(?) and leave and enter Nova(?). -Another crash(?): Turn your wheelie partner into a wheel at the same time you hop on him. This will make Kirby get stuck in mid-air, and if an enemy touches him, the game freaks out. On emulator it may not crash the game. In any case you can softlock by simply doing this where no enemy can touch you. I don't know if the game allows you to leave the game mode or not, though. Super Mario Sunshine -The earliest softlock I know is when you beat the first goop piranha and you talk to someone at the same frame that the cutscene starts playing where it shows the goop disspitating and the ground evening. -Many freezes possible, I think. But the only one I can think of: --In a Shadow Mario episode, beat Shadow Mario and spray at a graffiti and obtain the shine during the cutscene where it shows the blue coin that appeared. This will make the game "brrrr"-freeze. -You can "crash" the game by leaving the level at the same time you enter a loading zone into a new level. The game resets itself when you do this. Zelda Wind Waker -Abahbob will probably know better so I won't even try Earthbound -Can crash the game with the "Check Area glitch". -Can freeze the game if you use Walk Through Walls glitch and walk off the map too far (it will not always freeze the game, but sometimes it really lasts for 100,000+ frames). -For the record, I believe the shattered men glitch or the tree enemy that's set on fire and kills you while you kill it and win, both do not screw the game but only glitch up the graphics at most. Kirby's Adventure -You can get stuck somewhere late in the game due to bad level design. You float up and bad movement will push you inside of a wall with no way out. -Transform into stone while inside a body of water (see the glitched TAS). Fastest crash TAS would probably be the exact same as the glitched TAS. Daffy Duck The Marvin Missions (GB) -Can probably be screwed really fast. I should try it later Wario Land 2 -Clip out of bounds and touch certain blocks. Should be doable fast as well

If it is what I think it is, don't you reach the ground in about 50 minutes?

Am I going to have to do a fastest crash in NetHack, now? Actually, I can tell you how to do it yourself. Start a Healer, and type d4294967296$d4294967296$. Unless you somehow manage to die on turn 1, you should get a crash immediately on turn 2, in very short realtime. This may be improvable, especially in gametime. (You can get a buffer overflow turn 1, but on DOS, it won't crash the game immediately, and it requires rather more typing than the turn 2 crash does. I don't believe it's possible to get a crash on turn 0 (i.e. before gaining control of the character) without a custom configuration file, but who knows, I might be wrong.)

A pretty neat category. I remember playing around with the idea of "death run" some years back... Here's my contribution to crashing speedruns. God of War: Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta can both be crashed seconds after gameplay begins by doing a simple menu glitch at the in-game options menu. Silent Hill: Origins, if you start from new game+, you can crash the game at the very beginning by just shooting with tesla rifle and changing costume at the same time. Otherwise, you probably have to play until the theater level where you can do this. Winx Club for PS2, hmm... probably do "Nirvana glitch" at the earliest possible opportunity and then enter options menu, that always crashes the game. So, you probably have to play until the second level of the game, Black Mud Swamp. Mortal Kombat: Deception or Armageddon. Start a vs match, do a move that crashes the game when performed through blank move-glitch. Doable against CPU as well but you need luck for it. In Siren 2 I've had a game freeze after falling in OOB for a while and then entering another level from the level select. Maybe if that could be reproduced... Dante's Inferno. Get OOB as quick as possible. You probably have to get the Scythe and the first light magic to be able to infinite jump over the walls, but that doesn't take too long. Do attacks to avoid dying until hitting the bottom of OOB where Dante disappears. This usually causes game to crash, or if not, go to menu and switch pages, that at least does it.

More stuff: Kirby Air Ride Go out of bounds in city trail[Temp Softlock] RuneScape Classic Attack an NPC and right click it. After it dies, select an option for it. Docter Mario Happens occasionally when making a huge combo Resident Evil 4 Accidentally happened when playing around with the Chicago Typewriter, eggs and a grenade in the lake right before the del lago boss. Somehow, I threw away a grenade and left with "nothing" equiped. Crashed as soon as I tried to do something with it. Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow A side effect of having a glitched pokemon Pokemon Diamond/Pearl Saving and resetting in various places out of bounds [Softlock]

Super Mario World - Eating a berry at the same time the game shortly freezes (scrolling, changing powerup...) - Eating a chuck - Spitting out a null object on a brown platform - Clearing a secret exit with a glitch in a level without one could lead into an unwinnable situation Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island - Hitting an info block twice at the same time Tetris (NES) - Clearing line F99 or lines after that could maybe crash the whole game
Warning: Might glitch to credits I will finish this ACE soon as possible (or will I?)

SpongeBob - Legend of the Lost Spatula Not sure if this counts. Almost every time you try to do the glitch to fall through the water in Goo Lagoon, the screen will lose sight of SpongeBob and his character will disappear. Being unable to move, all you can do is pause the game and restart the level. Super Mario 64 A very annoying softlock that happens when you dive into a certain spot on the edge of the long rocky slope in Whomp's Fortress. Mario will loudly and continuously shout "Hoo! HOO!" as he glitches between the two platforms until you reset the game. Also, happens a lot when BLJing on the elevator in Big Boo's Haunt. I think it was MUGG that tried doing it on console, so he must have forgotten, but the game will usually freeze if you build up too much backwards speed. Kirby 64 Jumping into a pit and then pausing the game while your health is counting down causes the game to freeze.

Where does this happen? I don't remember a place where you can enter a wall.
