All current emulators used here store the movie data with the savestate, so loading the wrong state won't cause a desynch unless the movie is in read-only mode when loading the state and you either save state or start rerecording later.
Wow, I just picked this from the referrer log. Had no idea it's there.

video tutorials are for retards... it's ridiculous to see something and then have to alt+tab to the program (if it's one of those stupid flash things... if it's youtube it's even worse, because you can't read anything with that low quality)... it's lame, forget it!
if you can't learn it by reading, what are you doing here?
I had this idea before but I'd make a .chm file to be included with the emulators zip files.
I even started it, but I got lazy and it's here in my desktop...
Heh... that youtube link Bisqwit posted... that Jimmy guy has some great tutorials... I've seen something about google before that was very interesting. He should have wrote it, but... anyway they're eficient, but too superficial... can't be called "tutorials" exactly...
and.. en ee ess, ess en ee ess, tee ay ess videos... hahah that's really funny

That's a little rude how you said this. It would be nice for people beggining to know how to use frame advance, memory watch, to know how to find memory address.

Well, upthorn. The useful part of the tutorial would have to be written, anyway.
And since .chm files are html anyway, images can be easily added. Plus, you can make a step by step structure.
Hmm... also, if the thing gets really good, users with good fluence in englsh + other languages could translate them, for those smart guys who speak only their mother tongue.

Game specific instructions help, if you are looking to train someone to beat your own run.

wanted to let you know I'm eagerly awaiting these tutorials :D I think I have a reasonable level of understanding about TASing and a fair amount of game-internals.... yet still I've got alot to learn :)
specific interests: (perhaps parts are already finished?)
Might as well link this too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UR6b8CF6iLw
Shows a scene in Chrono Cross being perfected with re-recording, as well as the end result. It's easy to understand even if you don't know the game, because it has a simple goal: pass through a narrow path as quickly as possible without touching any of the jumping critters or the walls.
The difference to Ferret Warlord's video is that this plays in realtime, i.e. it does not show if the emulator was paused or run at frame advance. (If it did, it would be about 10 minutes long.)
This makes it also possible for most people to watch it without getting bored. :)
I think this is a great idea. I know I'd like to see a how-to on 2-player TASing; I'd like to try it, but I can't even wrap my brain around where to get started.
I've created one 2-player movie* (but not finished it), and what I did is to put the emulator into a sticky mode, where contrary to its normal behavior, clicking on any of the players' buttons toggles their state, so you can i.e. leave player 2 holding the Right button without actually holding that button down yourself. You play mostly with frame advance. Every frame you want to change what buttons are being held by each player, you just hit those relevant buttons, and then advance to the next frame. It is considerably less intuitive than normal playing, but allows for precise input without being limited by what your keyboard can do or by how many fingers you have.
I'm sure other authors have different means.
In some games, it may be possible to play each player's part separately, and then join them. This works only if the players' actions have no effect on what the other player can do (such as to the monsters' movements).

When I TAS a 2-player game, I control player 1 with my gamepad and player 2 with my keyboard. So basically, I hold down the necessary buttons with for the gamepad, and for the fingers I don't use on the gamepad, I hold down buttons on the keyboard for player 2, while frame advancing. It's not as hard as it sounds once you get used to it.
What happened to the original idea of making a TAS tutorial website? I think it could be a great idea, and give a lot of aid to new TAS runners and intermediate runners. I think it's an idea worth opening up again.

first of all we should find people willing to pose as examples and to tell how exactly they do their stuff... at least one person for each cathegory. There's no way to make a "general" tutorial... no one here can simply TAS whatever game he stumbles upon.

You keep using that word. I don't not think it means what you think it means.
