Submission Text Full Submission Page
This is my second run of Mario 64 and by far the biggest difficulty I encountered was doing the run in a way that would seem new to most people, I personally think there is just enough justification to watch it over the previous submissions .Most of the time saved came from the over world route and execution, although generally there is small frame shaving improvments throughout the game which will most likely go unnoticed, since improvements were so difficult to find I actually save a lot of time through avoiding lag. I admit my run isn't perfect but there can't be that much improvement.
  • Aims for fastest time
  • abuses programming errors
  • takes damage to save time
  • manipulates luck
This movie improves on Rikku's previous submission by over 7 seconds, Most of the time saved came from not saving at any point since there is a brief period where the the select bar can move but you can't select and options. I also used a slightly different overworld route which saved time as well, but generally everything else is just frame shaving improvements.

DeHackEd: Apparently mupen64 has a movie termination bug. ZIP file replaced with a fixed version.

DeHackEd: Another ZIP replacement, due to changes to the final Bowser fight.

adelikat: Delayed by authors request (new technique).

adelikat: You sir, have been bested.

Clearly, the 120-star run is more entertaining, but this one suffice to amuse and amaze.
That may be the general opinion in the forum, but clearly now that run can be improved by well over a minute possible 2.
That doesn't have a lot to do with its entertainment value though right, but rather its technical value?

Why does is say 27:98, I improved it by 20 frames the prevous one was 55639 while this one was 55619 meaning 55639/60 = 927.32 : subtract 15 mins 27.32 55619/60 = 926.98 : subtract 15 mins 26.98 Due to the termination bug I had to extend both inputs by 3 frames, so in they would be less if I could make it.

No offense, AKA, but the camera angles are atrocious. Following closely behind Mario in Bob-omb Battlefield, and upon jumping into Hazy Maze Cave, and at the last second before Mario touches numerous stars, literally gives me a headache. The other problem is that you have less sense of distance and speed because the close-up cuts out the world around Mario and eliminates points of reference. Doing Bowser 1 as the first star in your first run was shocking and radical. Even though you didn't enter through the door, doing Bowser 1 after other stars destroyed the novelty of that accomplishment. 7 seconds is a fabulous improvement, but between the new star order, and the motion sickness, I spent the first half of this movie deciding whether I was voting No or Meh. The second half got a lot better. The camera angles in Board Bowser's Sub were excellent. The need to reduce lag forced the camera to keep a reasonable distance and angle. The Bowser fights were excellent (other than the extreme close-up during the second toss in Bowser 3), and watching Mario slide up slopes on his belly was hilarious. After seeing that, I could no longer vote No, but I still don't think I can vote Yes to a movie that makes me sick. I think I have to vote Meh on this one.

Someone makes a good improvement to a great movie and you all start whining because he didn't mention the saved time and you have to do a little work?
You're right, making a valid complaint should instantly be dismissed as whining. 10 seconds of additional text on the submitter's part sounds more logical than making everyone who watches the submission go back to the N64 movies page and calculate the difference in time. That's just me, though; maybe you like inefficiency?

Yeah, I hate having to go to the movies page to compare times. It just takes a few seconds to include it in the submission text, and I consider it a courtesy.

I watched this and am voting yes. I cant see how it can be made faster (route-wise) and I'm looking forward to more improvement. Also, AKA, you mentioned the termination bug. You can get rid of it by hex editing in the last few frames of input (from wherever it would cut off) As Nitsuja explains here

I've tried all these reccomendations and they keep causing the game to pause unless I extend it for 3 more frames than needed.

Voted yes. I can't downvote movies for this game. I mean, the only way they could be bad is if people didn't try. Every movie done for this game is awesome.

I loved that part too! The movie was great! I wonder when are we gonna be able to beat (Glitch) the game by going straight to the final battle? Yessir

That is astronomically unlikely because you can't get upstairs without the key from Bowser 2. Even a 1 star movie is unlikely because we haven't yet found a way to BLJ to Bowser 2 without using MIPS. We can always dream of course...

It still amazes me how much height you get from the long jump Just a thought but is it really fast to BLJ to the stairs before the room with tick tock clock and rainbow road? It looks like it might be fast to just run to the stairs and turn around. I'm wrong I'm sure.

If you are reffering to the stairs before the star door, you have to. You have to store enough speed to get through the door with only 16 stars.

I think what TGPrimus is asking is do you have to start long-jumping right after you open the door, or can you run onto the stairs first to try to avoid long-jumping so far away from them at first?

Thanks for the clarification, that's exactly what I meant. I assume the answer is that the extra couple of long jumps are needed to give you just enough speed to use the stairs to get through the door. This doesn't apply to the TAS at all but if you could BLJ over and over in an open area would you keep building up (negative) speed? Is the ascending platform/wall or stairs a necessity or does it just make it faster?

You need to do long jumps before air friction (or whatever it is) slows your motion down. Long jumping backwards lets you increase your backwards velocity almost limitlessly, but you need to be able to do it fast enough to counteract the forces slowing you down. To this end, Mario must be able to do long jumps QUICKLY. A surface that rises as you move backwards is one obvious way. Slopes, stairs and elevators moving upwards all do the job. It also works to have a really low ceiling so mario bounces to the ground almost instantly. This is how enterance to Bowser in the Dark World is achieved.

I think what he was trying to say was why didn't Mario run onto the stairs first and then BLJ, instead of BLJing right after coming out the second floor door.

I think now that there is a faster one in the que this one should be at least briefly published in order to document it, hex editing the improvement would not be worthwhile, although it should be noted that many of the strategies and generic improvements in the other submission are directly copied from this run.
