I'd like to see that jump evilchen was attempting to if it's possible... Anyone willing to make a movie?

Tonski: It was in Norfair, the big room with the green gate and the Missile, connected to the mainstreet room. evilchen: Hero is right about it. It simply don't work here because you 1. have too much momentum gained, and 2. too low jumping. In order to make this jump there, you must gain some falling speed before it, which isn't possible without actually jump somewhat higher and sooner before it. And apparently hero found one of my small timesaver in old MB room. :-) Good job! How is the progress btw? Did you reach Brinstar already?

Saturn: I didn't ask where that place is, I already knew that. :) I wanted to know if it's possible, and if so maybe a movie about it. Hero of the day: It hasn't been long since you published your last any%-run with amazing 25min and you're making a new run already am I correct? Whoa.

Evilchen, in case you missunderstood, it sure is possible to execute the walljump in the place you tried. But as said, you just have to jump earlier and higher, in a correct position to make that walljump work. However I doubt it would be of any use, since using JXQs Grapple Beam variant will be somewhat faster in the end anyway.

Tonski: Yes, I am working on a new run already. I do not know if I can get 24 minutes, but I know that there are lots of little tweaks that need to be fixed in the published run. We shall see how it turns out ;) Saturn: I am not at brinstar yet, I just finished killing the torizo. I am taking more time with this run, and testing various ways to do each room before I advance. Too bad I didn't know about the trick in the old MB room earlier, it would have looked nice in my run. evilchen: Please keep trying to find new tricks, you have much potential. It is difficult to find anything new in this game, but I know that you can still find some cool stuff. Also, I really like your video editing skills. I have seen what you have done with JXQ's run, and it looks great.

Nice pic hero of the day (I'm so waiting for SSBB !) ^^ Finally, I'm going to get a complete and japanese version of Super Metroid for my Snes =D I know it's "hard" to TAS on a real console, but I will be able to try some regular runs and if I can do some nice stuff, I will post everything (which I think to be at least useful or interessant) here :)

I recently watched some Metroid runs and thought of a small time saving trick. The last time you enter that tunnel (which you have to blow up with a power bomb to enter maridia) before entering maridia, you should set a power bomb. After explosion just go to the next room and go on as usual. When you then enter maridia the tunnel is already blowed up. Doing this will really save a bit of time.

Actually, it makes more sense to do it when entering Maridia, as doing it before would require a loss of momentum.

What if you do a mockball? Hero nice new avatar. I tried to find some stuff for your any%-run that would maybe be faster but couldn't think of anything. I just ended up doing another smv that sucks. Well I think this one has a bit faster overall speed than my old ones, although it doesn't make any sense for any kind of run. :-P http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4704/Super%20Metroid.smv

My guess is that if you did a mockball you'd be out of the room way before the explosion. Besides, Samus would still lose her momentum when uncurling, it would just happen a bit later.

You still have to wait for the cutscene of the tube exploding before you can leave the room, and doing it before would cause one to lose horizontal momentum that one could lose later when they have to anyways when they have to move vertically into Maridia.

Link_enfant: Thanks, SSBB does look absolutely awesome. I am looking forward to your console run, hopefully you can find something new ;) Tonski: Thanks for trying to find improvements and stuff. That smv you posted is slower than the way JXQ does that room, but at least you are trying new and different ideas. Yrr: kwinse is correct, that the cut scene must be completed in order for the glass tube to actually open up. I have tried on numerous occasions to escape the tube without waiting for the exploding animation, but it is impossible to avoid. As promised here is a bundle of demo smvs that I have compiled. Unless otherwise noted, all the smvs were made by me. It should be noted that some of these are slower than what is done in JXQ's movie, but some may be faster as well. I have also included some movies which can be very useful in a RBO route. check em out

Yeah! That stuff was awesome! I was really amazed by the mizzleshiner, yet the creativity in shinespark before X-Ray made me go nuts. Even my (?) little springball-thing got there. :) That crocomire thing was great too. Even though some of that stuff isn't even needed in any%-run, I could think of faster 100%-run with all those tricks, besides, it would be much more entertaining. I'm so much waiting for your any%-improvement! ...yet Saturn's RBO haunts my mind. Saturn when are you thinking of going forward with this run?

@kwinse, if you immediatly lay a bomb, you can stop and start running, so that 1 frame before you leave the room the bomb explodes. You will have running speed and you save the time which is needed to travel through the tube. Ok, it's just an idea.

Wow, thanks alot for the bundle, hero! I especially liked the Missileshiner, even though its useless and would hardly save any time compared to walljump. But the only tech that appears to be very interesting and probably even faster is the X-Ray shinspark with the help of the frozen drainer. Too bad PBs would kill it while opening the passage to it, so leting it attach you and then lay a PB and quickly get it out of the reach would probably cost more time in the end anyway. Still might be interesting to test it carefully, as I have a feeling it might indeed be very close even that way. EDIT: Damn, I forgot that JXQ didn't have the Ice Beam when passing it on the way to Maridia, which would be the only option to shinespark to X-ray. Doing it from the bottom when returning from LN wouldn't work, simply because you would need to shot this 2 blocks to make it up to the door, and therefore destroy your Charge-gaining platform. Oh well, bad luck with it... Tonski: After getting more and more pissed with SM-any% I play with the thought to eventually continue the RBO run before the any% again. And maybe even during TASing of SMR-any%. But I can't promise anything, so it's better to just wait and see later.

Yes finally... I can't wait for the RBO-run! ;D I started my first TAS ever. It's any%-run and I'm currently in Brinstar. Here's WIP: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4717/TASpart1.smv I know it's not good but being my first TAS and all I'm happy with it. :) EDIT: Fixed link.

Seems like you're using a bad dump: correct CRC32 for the US version would be D63ED5F8.

Yrr: Thanks for ignoring my posts, I really appreciate it. Its not like I know anything about this game anyway. Saturn: The missle shine tech is for people who collect the speed booster before wrecked ship, but skip the high jump boots. The walljumping without the hi-jump is much slower, so the trick saves a bit of time. The trick with the frozen drainer is very possible to use even with a power bomb. I should have posted a longer smv of it to show you. From above a power bomb can be layed which will destroy all the blocks and still keep the drainer alive. This tech saves easily 3-4 seconds, but it requires that you pick up the ice beam early. Tonski: That looks pretty good so far, keep it up.

Hero: Really? 0_0 You can destroy all PB blocks without hurting the drainer?? He is on the same height as the bottom row of PB blocks, which HAVE to be destroyed in order to do the spark, so he will be hit as well, as long as you won't bring him out of reach somehow. If you have a smv, please show how the heck you want to manage that without hitting him.

Wow, thanks alot hero! I see now how it works. Apparently the room was horizontally big enough to keep the drainer in the edge JUST save from the PB wave, which radius could only reach the needed PB blocks only. I already had suspected this, but never thought the distance of the drainer location could be far enough to save it from the PB-wave. Glad to be proven wrong in this case. :-)

I think that jumping is the only way to avoid having the drainer die. I think that fact that the drainer is off the screen allows it to survive despite being in the blast radius. My impression was that this technique would be useful in a RBO route, because I thought x-ray was needed for maridia.
