This video is incredible. Thanks a lot for making it. It should be published on TASvideos.

I think most people will agree that TASVideos needs to rework how it publishes movies so that there's a place to put these "super niche" videos (that are made primarily for fans of the game) without having to give them the same prominence that the more standard runs (any% and 100%, and maybe low%) have. Once that's done, Saturn's 14%, the SB 14%, RBO, et cetera could all come out of the woodwork.
Indeed. Just give the most popular games (Metroids, Marios, Zeldas) their own sections. This shouldn't be hard to do. Why is it not being done?

Fredrik: because reworking how movies are presented on the website takes a lot of nontrivial work, and the maintainers are doing this strictly as a hobby. I'm sure you could volunteer your own efforts to make an alternate version of the site and get feedback on it; how good of a programmer / web dev are you?

Looking at movies page, there already is a system to sort movies into categories, so at least by the looks, it shouldn't be hard for someone familiar with the code to add a "Game: Super Metroid" category (say). But for all I know, I might grossly underestimate the actual work involved. Don't get me wrong, "no one has time" is a good enough answer for me. I don't have time to do this either, even if I were given access to the site code. I know what it's like to run a hobby project. (I was more interested in whether there is a strong technical issue, or philosophical disagreement with allowing more publications for individual games.)

The main technical issue, I believe (not having seen the codebase myself), is not giving the uber-niche movies the same prominence that the regular publications enjoy. There's also a social issue, though, which is figuring out who decides if a niche movie is publishable. I'm not trying to revive the debate, just laying out what I understand the issues to be.

Adding a Category "Super Metroid" is an ugly workaround. Categories aren't game names. However, game names aren't normalized in the database, which leads to performance problems when attempting to group by game. So as a first step, games need their own table. That also means that we need to write an admin-tool for the new data and most scripts accessing the movie table need to be adjusted for the new table structure as well. I've originally suggested Game pages in Nov 2006. Bisqwit picked up on the idea later, and some work was done, but there was some disagreement over details and communication failures on both sides and then we both lost track of it. I still have the scripts I wrote somewhere, collecting dust. Not that those scripts are all we need, but they'd be a start. I've asked in a recent thread if any of the new admins were interested in reviving this, but got no reply. So there. I still think that a new system would improve the site, but it's a lot of work and I'm not doing that alone (can't even, I'm no admin). Unless one of the current admins steps forward with an intent to see this done, things will stay the way they are. anyway, that was a lot of OT-talk, should you wish to discuss this further, I'd suggest going to the proper threads :)

Forgive me if I am just missing the obvious, but I thought hero's run should have finished first... what with the lowest real time. But then i noticed all the transitions were gone so i guess that could account for it. Just curious.

Yep, that's correct DoctorJohn. When discounting the doors and item collections, Cp's run finishes approximately 30 seconds faster than mine. It will be interesting to see the next generation of SM tases compared with this lua script. I know the current gen any% runs are both pretty improvable.

I've been thinking of a way to save time in krayd's area, but i realized that it would be very difficult to use it in a any% run. Actually, i don't even know if it's possible or if it would save any time. Let me explain the idea: After you get the Varia Suit, charge the Shinespark in Krayd's room, run to the next room and shoot a Super Missile in the left door, release the Shinespark to go through all the next room. If it's possible and if it saves any time, it would be usefull in a RBO or a 100% run. Remember that there's an Energy Tank to recover all the energy lost in the Shinespark, on the way out of Krayd's area.

If there's a flaw in that plan, I can't see it. Sounds perfect.

I made a real time test just to see how high is possible to shinespark and still hit all the enemies. The result was: If you land on the pipe in the midle of the room after Krayd's room and shinespark, Samus will stop on the Spikes. So the idea is: After charging the shinespark in krayd's room, run and do a continuous wall jump in the first hole of the next room. I think this continuos wall jump is enough to pass over the pipe and shoot the Super Missile to open the door.

I don't know if I understood it correctly, but nevertheless here's a small demonstration for visualisation. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/411253853/kraidspark.smv

Thanks man, that's it! Just don't know if it's faster or slower, considering the way Cpadolf uses in his last 100% run.

I tried several different things, and it's still about 30 frames slower than the original method. To be noted mini-kraid gives you super missiles with the shinespark too, they drop on the same frame his hp reaches 0. You just have to be lucky enough that Samus manages to pick them all up.

Thank you for testing it, Kriole, and thanks for helping with the visualization, GraveWorm.

Sorry a bit old, but I had a question about the ghost video. What made the movie run real time without transitions and item collection time? Was it a script? I sent a PM but no reply so maybe you guys know.

I think it was the script itself

Yes, it was in the script. If you read the description of the script, it has several options for how to synchronize them and what sort of things to display. So if you run the script with the default settings, it only displays in-game frames, i.e. frames where the in-game timer changes. So to be clear: I did not use any video editing software to change the video: what you see in that video is just a recompressed version of what you get when running the script. Be aware if you want to do this yourself, though: There is a bug in the current snes9x-rr that makes produce buggy audio output in the dumped video if frames are skipped during recording. I fixed that bug in my version of snes9x-rr.

Amaurea the reason I ask is, I am trying to get Cpadolf's new run without the ghosts. But have it in real time without the transitions/item pickups.

Well, a script for just skipping non-ingame-frames is just a few lines long, and can also be found in the snes9x lua scripting thread, which would also be a better place to ask in the first place.

Just another idea, still considering Kraid's area. After defeating Kraid, the spikes on the ground begin to desapear. So while it is desapearing, to charge the shinespark, go to next room and take the Varia Suit and go back to Kraid's room. do a low jump, shot a Super Missile and release the shinespark to travel through Kraid's room and through the next to the door. The low jump is to avoid Samus stop on the pipe on the next room. I'd be greatfull if someone test the possibilities.

Thinking about that idea does seem like it would work, however, it's good to know the run category ammo/energy status and equipment before investing time into it, which leads me to the next sentence in this post. I don't really think it's worth testing because of these restrictions: realtime any% - No speedboster ingame any% - Has SJ, and SJ-ing is fast as shit through these rooms Both the 100%(cp's used) and 14%(passed this section) don't have any energy to spare, by almost a full tank. RBO maybe, didn't look at mine or Kriole's to check strat used or energy at that point. I had SJ anyways. May of missed something important, but that would, 110%, be Kriole's fault.

I began testing this and concluded it slower nearly right away. The reason why, is that you need to wait for the spikes to disappear, and you need to wait quite a long time. Once you've charged the spark the doors open quicker than Samus has time to reach the actual door. I tried spiking, but she didn't want to take damage. That and plus that I'm really lazy atm.
