Post subject: TAS moves that helped you in normal play?

Sometimes a TAS does something that doesn't require frame or pixel perfection to pull off, or just does something that you might not have thought of otherwise. I find it extremely satisfying when something I see in a TAS can be useful to me in normal play. Here's some examples: 1. The Use all DSS glitch in CoTM. Brilliant! Right after watching the movie, I tried it out for myself, I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only did it work, but it was pretty easy to do it regularly. 2. Using #2 as a platform in MM2 (NES). Of all the things I saw in that movie, that was the one that I remember as making me go "d'oh, why didn't I think of that?" Like 1. it isn't all that hard to do it at normal speed, but it is tougher than the DSS glitch, and it's easy to use up more of #2 than you wanted to. But one of the biggest I can think of right now is 3. Pressing down to inflate new Balloons in Balloon Kid. Not exactly a "trick" or "glitch," more like a "make this game actually beatable." When I first played this game, I thought the let go of the balloon button was basically a suicide move, since I thought you had to get new ones from some kind of power-up that was never there. That changed when I watched MattyXB's nearly Balloonless run. I found the run entertaining and it helped me be able to play the game! Thanks man.

After TASing Super Metroid, I was able to finally do the mockball on console because I understood better which buttons needed to be pressed when.

So now I want you to break Scarlet's 100% record on SDA! :P But yes, I improved myself alot more in Super Metroid as well, after geting knowledge of TASes.

Heh, I've already beat it on TAS, which is enough for me. :D But you're right, Super Metroid has a lot of techniques that are better understood with some TASing knowledge of the game. Besides the mockball, there's the short charge, and I also figured out exactly which buttons to press in what order to make the zooooooooooom go diagonal or horitontal. I could presumably also do the zebetite skip. I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting. To try and not derail this into Metroid, I think I could do a little better at Sonic 1 now on console, as well, though I've never given that a serious effort. Things like "holding forward when going too fast will slow you down", and such. (Also, SuperMetroidTricks needs some updating.)

<Dacicus> btw, if you don't mind me asking, what's this crushing death by brick quote about? <Bisqwit> We were talking about Umihara Kawase. <Bisqwit> Flagitious tried to improve a certain stage, and it was hindered by the girl moving so fast that when she bumped into a brick, she died instantly (instead of stopping, and springing back).

As mentioned somewhere in this site, explaining what TASes are, it mentioned some people think TASing makes us incapable of real time playing, listing Bisqwit as an example for Megaman. TASing sure did ruin my ability to play DKC2 in real time :P

TASing has taken away my ability to play around with some platformers. Nowdays I just try to beat them as fast as I can (DKC and Mega Man 2 for example) which usually makes me game over a lot faster than usual.

It's not a TAS, but I don't think I could have beaten the original Quake without having watched qdqwav about a hundred times... I copied most of their routes

I've taken countless stratagies from the two mario 64 TASes. Many of them took a lot of practice, but I can now do a far bit of them.

Well, after watching so much TASes I usually take damage to save time, try to abuse glitches and progamming errors as much as I can and sometimes even use death as a shortcut Its awesome, my style of playing is completely different after and before the TASes :D

More play, less TAS. If you TAS "everyday", take one day or two to only play unassisted that game. You can find good knowledge of the stages and maintain your ability to play unassisted. During my DKC3 run i every time play the next stage 4 or 5 times unassisted to learn the route. And i could finish it everytime without savestates or slowdown. Just TAsing, ake your ability away all the time. I didn't believe that i die in the Giant Land on SMB3. In my good times i finished the game dying just on Pipe Land (without warps, of course).
Not more working on: DKC3 105% < Needs modified Nitsuja Snes9x+9, with reset recording.

I can definately say that TASing Battlemaniacs and learning faster tricks and moves from FODA is what helped me get the world record. This reminds me to make a new video and submit it to SDA....

I've found that watching TAS allows me to be more careless. But, i also am a terrible player of most games. I usualy play so cautiously that its my downfall. After watching, for example Megaman Bosses, TAS' i find confidence in actualy what can be done, vs crouching in a corner waiting for a chance. I would have never beat mmz2 on GBA without the confidence MM TAS's transfered.

The shop glitch in Crystalis makes the beginning of the game a little easier. I also notice that my play has been impacted by TAS experience even though I haven't done any TASing for months now.
