SNES Doom is closer, but it's rather poor quality compared to the regular computer game (not sure if that should be the right phrase, being that Doom has been ported to nearly every console and computer now :P)

Weren't there bad desyncing problems with snes doom because emulators couldn't handle it well or something?

possibly... but the character running is *incredibly* fast. I didn't think it was *that* dark, but it's dark to be sure, not as colorful as, say, Yoshi's Island. and it emulated pretty well on Mupen, so it might be the closest thing to a Doom TAS at the time being.

I can say diretly that any submissions for SNES or other poor ports of Doom will be rejected, because there are already excellent TASes for the PC version. The question is if we should start to accept (or more likely host) those PC Doom movies. Doom for N64 are different, it is a new game, new levels and new weapons, so it could be accepted as a different game here. I should mention that I haven't played it. How fast does he run in N64? Faster than the ~200 km/h doomguy in the PC version can wallstrafe at?

I'm not sure becayse I've never played the PC version, but he was running pretty fast lemme tell you, I was stunned for a shooter like that at how fast he ran.

I would rather like to accept PC Doom TASes than SNES Doom TASes, because of the big difference in visual and aural quality.

Sure, but why is snes doom completely out of question? I think it would be interesting to see. I have seen many Doom speedruns (none tool-assisted, though), but seeing a TAS of the snes version would be interesting.

Fabian brought up some points yesterday that made me wonder which side of this issue I would be on. In general, I don't think having more than one version of a game is bad, nor do I think that changing versions is bad either, as long as it's significantly explained. The reasons for multiple versions can range from differences in graphics and sound (Super Mario All-Stars), to new levels (Prince of Persia SNES), to version-exclusive glitches (Flashback Genesis). But this is a special case that I don't think will work. SNES Doom tries to be PC Doom and fails hard. The whole time I would watch a TAS of it, I'd be thinking "I sure do wish this was a TAS of the PC game." As I understand it, there's no new content on the SNES version. The graphics are different, sure - I think we have 12 frames a second on the SNES. There may be new glitches in the SNES version, but unless they are significant, they aren't going to make this run entertaining. A similar example is the Sonic Genesis remake for GBA. I really doubt the glitchy physics are going to make this lag-filled game entertaining, especially with the great original Sonic 1 in our memory. So I guess what will happen is that someone will eventually TAS one of these types of games, and we'll have to see what kind of response it gets. If the version is truly unique enough, then it will get the praise it needs to get published. I HIGHLY doubt this will happen with SNES Doom.

Some Doomworld user called RamboBones was working on a very precise TAS of Doom 2, but he cancelled the project and says "I encourage everyone to take it and do with it as they wish." (It was labeled "fastest.lmp")
