I was just wondering if any other users have profiles on MySpace or Facebook, two of the more popular "social networking" sites around. If so, I think we should make use of these sites to increase our community profile, if you will. Both sites allow "friend" connections as well as "groups." We could create a TASVideos-themed group, or we could make a profile to represent our board. For example, BisqBot could have its own profile and we could all befriend it. What do you think about this? Even if we don't go ahead with the above plan, we could at least share our info to increase our friend networks... You can see me at http://www.myspace.com/feitclub

hey... what's this forum for?
"Genuine self-esteem, however, consists not of causeless feelings, but of certain knowledge about yourself. It rests on the conviction that you — by your choices, effort and actions — have made yourself into the kind of person able to deal with reality. It is the conviction — based on the evidence of your own volitional functioning — that you are fundamentally able to succeed in life and, therefore, are deserving of that success." - Onkar Ghate

I use LiveJournal only. I have a MySpace account, but I never, ever, ever use it. I think I only joined because someone ended up forcing me to, and then just abandoned the account ASAP. I'd rather not have morons I know from the past showing up acting like they're all my friends and crap. Like, say, most of the people I grew up with.

On Facebook, I put the site as one of my personal groups, but not as an actual group. The last thing I want is for this site to get invaded with college kids who think they know something about video games. Also, this site should be as far distanced from Myspace as possible. Why is there such a desire to get this site out to the masses?

More probably. More of everything. More contributions to Bisqwit to keep the site running. More people to argue and muse with in the forums. More varied and different gamers with different talents and tastes. But im with you in a way. Rather than propagating the site outright, it should be kept to those that have found it off their own backs. (A bit like the movie 'The Beach', or book rather, which is a lot better :p)

I don't think it's possible for me to agree more with this statement. Even people who like Myspace should agree with this, if they understand this site. Here we have lots of organized data, intelligent discussion, and interesting movies. On the other hand, Myspace has the most disorganized layout possible, meaningless discussion, and nothing interesting, because no one gives a crap about anyone. Plus, this way, TASVideos will not end up a target on DateLine for hooking up 14-year-old skanks with men three times their age. And the funniest part is that I actually have a myspace account.

I only mentioned MySpace because a lot of people use it, therefore I figured a lot of forum users were on it already. I am well aware of the sites' shortcomings, I'm just trying to speculate on ways we can increase the connection between the forum users. We already have threads dedicated to user photos and user ages, so why not a thread dedicated to users' social networking profiles? And if putting TASVideos on YouTube isn't inviting the masses to come check out the site, I don't see how MySpace is any more invasive.

A Facebook tas group would be easy enough to create. Just make a a group called "Tasers" or "TasVideoPeople" and then have people join the group.

The difference is this: On YouTube, the majority of the people that will view our stuff will be looking for it or things like it. Anyone who is intigued enough to join will, and this is fine. It shows interest and determination. Also, YouTube will have a slight explanation for what they are seeing. On MySpace, people will only view our movies through a TASVideos member, journal posts, or randomized messages that somehow involve us. Anyone that sees us through the first is fine, since it comes from the source and they generally won't be viewing the page without some interest in games. The only exclusion would be people stumbling upon the page through a friend of the site, which is essentially the equivalent of exposing TASVideos' heart to the 13 year old scene kids of Myspace. Finding TASVideos through a journal post is a crapshoot, because it not only allows for the public to come across the link (and we know that idiot internet users will randomly click on links from MySpace without thinking), but it also allows for the journal owner to post misinformed things about us. The final source, the randomized message, is probably never going to happen, but that is basically like putting a link to our site on ebaumsworld. So uhh... yeah. YouTube will only link to us through promotional and informative material. MySpace will only open a portal from TASVideos to the 7th circle of internet hell.

But then we have to learn each others' full names and interests. I already added Ramzi, but that's about as much effort as I can put in to that. I can't pretend to care about every college-attending member of this site!

Yeah, and they'll demand we tell them how to jump up the infinite stairs rapidly. Explanations won't satisfy, so they'll make a really big avitar. Also,

Facebook is now dropping its closed entrance requirements, so it's going to turn in to MySpace 2.0. Can that idea as well.

I just created a Facebook group for this called Tool Assisted Speedrunners. Important: I don't know whether or not to make it secret or closed. comparison: Secret: The group will not appear in search results or in the profiles of its members. Membership is by invitation only, and only members can see the group information, the discussion board, the wall, and photos. Closed: Administrative approval is required for new members to join. Anyone can see the group information, but only members can see the discussion board, the wall, and photos. This will help it keep among TASers only, so that some of the issues addressed above will not occur. Right now Facebook is on a anyone can join spree- they might change it if enough people complain, so if you're not in a school/business network it'd be a good idea to join as quickly as possible. PM me so that I can add you. also, should I have the website listed in the info for the group?

I post on Gaia Online. Every time I've thought of posting about TASVideos on the main forum I got this really sick feeling that I'd be bombarded with hundreds of idiots yelling "cheating!" and pretending they know a game better than everybody else but not really. (Hell, we get enough of that crap with normal speedruns on Youtube.)

Sure thing. In the future, all join requests in PM form so that you can list your real name/network so I can find you on Facebook without everyone here in this Topic knowing personal info and stuff. Here is the link to the group: Tool Assisted Speedrunners Facebook Group You can request to join, give me a message on Facebook or (more preferably) here stating name and forum nickname so I can verify.

How about just a Frappr map?

Eh not everyone uses Frappr, I just checked it out not my taste. Facebook is more user friendly also, and some TASers here already have facebooks.

Some TASers are planning to leave facebook after recent changes in allowance and interface. I don't understand the desire for a TAS group on facebook. No one will really care about one tiny link in a profile: barely anyone actually reads profiles either way.
