Little update--I finished act4 about 10 secs faster than before, I have already gained 19 secs over my first run. This is mostly thanks to using invincible fire wheel, so thanks 4matsy. Unfortunately, enemies tend not to be in helpful locations for hitting them and then going through spikes so I have to jump on the spikes directly when I don't have ifw. Luckily, I only have to take 2 hits to go through without stopping. This is lucky because you only have enough life to take 2 hits.
This raises a question about dealing with the spikes in 7-3. The only invincible fire in act 7 is about halfway through 7-1, so I'd have to hold onto it until the end. It may well be worth it though I am sure there are situations there I can use enemy hits to get through. This will make 7-1 a nightmare though. Probably have to take hits, but it will be ok since I'll be invincible for spikes in 7-3. Once I get to 7-2B ninja power is plentiful. Other problem is that I was looking forward to using vacuum wave on the final boss, it's been my key to faster boss fights. Last wave is right in the beginning of 7-3A so I'd end up using upwards fire wheel like before, without much room for improvement on the final two bosses. Invincibility on spikes will definitely give a bigger improvement than having wave for the boss, but I'd like to have it all if I can. Any ideas or input are welcome...
I also beat act4 boss much faster by using every trick in the book. The main trick is using the wall to hack faster than normally possible. When watching it at full speed you really can't blink. I believe the only other boss this tactic will work on is final boss first form.
...Wow.
I thought your last movie was about as good as it was going to get aside from the damage thing, but it's nice to see this being so wrong. Excellent work, man, looking forward to seeing it when it's done!

but then you take my 75 perchance chance of winning, if we was to go one-on-one, and then add 66 and two-thirds ch...percents...i got a 141 and two-thirds chance of winning at sacrifice

Well I've made it to the end in this run but there are some improvements to make in act 7, I need to at least get the final final boss a little faster. However, as it stands I am already 38 sec faster than my published run. On the first form I considered going behind him but I couldn't finish him as fast as head-on. The second form was actually a little faster with upwards fire wheel, but not by much. Looking at the spikes in 7-3, I gained a lot of time, but I still spend about 2 sec waiting. Overall, having vacuum wave on the final bosses saves about 50 frames. So I should try the invincible fire wheel out, but this will require rethinking all of act 7. Don't know if I can go as fast through the beginning part, but I'll have to find out. Ok, here's what I got...

Oh wow, invincibility worked out much better than I had guessed. At least another 3 seconds better, with no waiting at all on the spikes. I was even able to get super sword and full ninja power in 7-2B and not wait for the moving platforms. It's very close, but this saves me 2 secs of waiting. Just need to refine 7-3 and whup the bosses and this will be done, looks like it will be right about 41-42 sec faster than before.
OK, now that I am in spring break and my school year is almost over (high school), I want to work on this game.
What I want to do is complete it 100% by killing all enemies possible. This will probably be my only game thingy, and I am basically doing it for nostalgia.
Do I have to do anything special, like beat the old time, or can I just start?
Uh, yeah, you kinda hafta beat the old time, unless you've got some special goal that's really interesting. And even then, you should complete the goal as fast as possible. I don't know the Ninja Gaiden games, so I have no idea whether "100%" would be interesting enough for a new kind of movie. But hey, that "pacifist" Contra movie was published, so who knows?
put yourself in my rocketpack if that poochie is one outrageous dude
the interesting thing about is in the current ninja gaiden, the author skipped a lot of enemies for time. And there are a lot of enemies on screen about half the time. Having to kill them all and not waste time should make it interesting.
Also the fact that I know I can't beat the current time is something I do not want to look forward to...
Well, if you think you have about enough skill to match the current time, then you'll probably be okay trying the new goal. You'll probably have to re-invent some strategies to do it, anyway.

Killing all enemies? I don't think it would be that cool. I have to say this is a good game to practice timeattacking on, but good luck beating my time. I have thought about redoing a few things in my run, getting the minimal amount of powerups and trying to get some more action on the windmill stars. I don't know of anything that would speed it up.
I don't think there are any different angles to go at this game worth publishing. You could restrict what powerups you get, but that wouldn't be as interesting. My first published run at this game took no damage, but it ended up being much cooler to take hits after all even though it saved little time.
But all that being said, if you're set on going through with this I'd still be interested to see what you come up with.
Ninja Gaiden 3 - 6-3boss v1 (mildly humorous)Ninja Gaiden 3 - 6-3boss v2 (18 frames faster)
I've already decided which one is going into the finished run (v1 -- I like it that much) but I'm curious how many people share my opinion. Is it really "one third of a second more entertaining?" Is v2 more entertaining to you? Or should I stop making pointless topics and get back to work?
Looking at it through frame advance: Is it that the boss appears to be undecided about which way to go before slamming into the wall? I didn't notice it at first when looking at it in real time. Now I can see it, but I wonder if most people would even notice? Anyway, I don't think it really makes a huge difference in entertainment. Personally, I think the boss actually slamming into the wall is funnier than the boss being undecided before finally slamming into it.
Honestly, I think I actually laughed out loud the first time I played it back, but you know... different strokes. :)
Yup.
Thanks for the input guys. Opinions noted. ;)
Glad to hear it, but don't expect much of anything too new or exciting... it's gonna be slightly faster boss fights and minor optimizations throughout... but I guess you could say that about all my submissions here. There's just not a lot that can be done with this game that hasn't already been done. (except for maybe in 6-2)
I was working on tweaking/re-synching level six on my second draft of this run and was hoping to finish it up this weekend... but no! I stumbled upon a little trick that seems quite obvious in hindsight and should shave another 7-8 seconds off the run (mostly from boss fights.) So, time to start over. Since it will be difficult to make the improved boss slayings look interesting, I figured I'd post the WIP up to the end of level five for anyone who's interested.
Wow, loved the boss fight at 4-3! I have a suggestion for the autoscrolling section in the beginning: what if you play around with enemies on screen more, rather than wait on one spot until the fire catches up, then kill them all in a matter of second? You seem to have used this approach more towards the end of the section, and I liked it. On the other hand, that cold-blooded waiting for the fire also was neat to see, especially at the start. Either way, what you're doing is awesome. :)
Yep, reworking 2-2C (long auto-scrolling part with lava) was on my to-do list for after I had a complete and optimized run along with 4-1 since most of it is effectively auto-scrolling. Also the new trick should make some neat looking stuff possible, especially where speed isn't an issue. (yeah okay, up+a cancels jumping attack animations :p)
This would've been done a month ago but I've been busy with other stuff. I had it just about ready to submit the other day when I found that the level 2 boss could be killed 12 frames faster. Time to start over again! :D
Of course not. But this game has enough randomness that it's just as effecient to redo all input in most cases. And since I'm finding myself second guessing almost every aesthetic decision, it doesn't really matter. Though, since I'm changing only a boss fight by a multiple of 3 frames, it may just slap right together with the existing levels' 3-7 input.

Oh yeah!
I found new glitch in Ninja gaiden 3.
It is possible to zip inside the wall.
It is somehow hard to explain how did this happen.
I was screwing around in 1-2a then i stuck in the platform allowing me to zip directly to exit.
Then let the input do the explaining for you. You were recording, right? ;p
1-2a would be the boss room, and a quick look at RAM shows no scene change objects on screen there. I am intrigued!
