This movie is the TAS of Metroid Legacy, which is one of the most famous hacks of Super Metroid. It was completed in June 2005, and had already been published at a certain Japanese website. Having a chance, I'm just submitting it into the worldwide community for the first time.

Metroid Legacy Introduction

"Metroid Legacy" is well-balanced, full-changed hack of Super Metroid.
Features of this hack are following.
  • Almost all of the landforms, placement of enemies, room connections, item order are changed.
  • It contains whole new world that is not associated with original world.
  • Upgraded game difficulty throughout all scenes, especially boss fights.
  • No change of game systems like movement of Samus and enemies, graphic-chips, 100 items.
  • No need of gilche knowledge to complete game.
The whole new world, which is entirely differ from original world, spreads out in this game. You can enjoy new exploration, searching routes, looking for required items, fighting enemies. Operation of Samus is same to original one, so you can play it smoothly. You will re-experience the first impression of Super Metroid.

Critical_five: I think the link given above is broken; you may download the ips at Romhacking.net.

Movie introduction

This smv movie was created with Snes9x-143-WIP1-win32 (WIP!!) and it
  • takes damage to save time
  • gets all items, 100%
  • aims for the fastest time
  • shows all secret routes in this game
  • runs through almost reverse order, unbelievable and stupid routes
  • contains several new tricks which may apply to original game.
Although speed run technique used in this movie may be old-fashioned, whole routing in 100% run of Legacy must be still fresh and full of originality. I believe you will have an enjoyable time for watching it, and for the sake of your best fun, I strongly recommend you to play Metroid Legacy with your own hand before watching my movie. Thank you!

New Tricks contained

  • Torizo quickest kill
    • It save time for 1-2 second(s) to beat Torizo by skipping one of his attack phases.
  • Sprore Spawn quickest kill
    • It kills him in second turn by using muscle way.
  • hopping ball / spring dash (I dont know how to name it...)
    • Samus keeps her speed through narrow pipe or other complex situation by using spring ball.

Information

  • Play Length : 1h 26min
  • Re-record count:26514
  • Clear Time : 49min
  • Colecting Item Rate : 100%
  • Emulator : Snes9x-143-WIP1-win32

Acknowledgment

I must say sorry for Bisqwit to submit it so late though I received his favor about 2 month ago. And also say "thank you" for the permission of Metroid Legacy. In addition, thanks to Terimakasih, Sippu and Kejardon for teaching me techniques and more informations. Lastly, very thank you BananaOyaji-san (Legacy author) for making this excellent hack.

That's good to hear! I hope you will choose either variant eventually. :)

If it's J, shouldn't it also be JU?

I patched my Metroid Legacy ROM from a (JU) one and it works just fine all the way. You just have to patch it correctly. EDIT: I used IPSWIN 2.0 to patch it. Latest version of this program is available on: http://zerosoft.zophar.net/ipswin.htm

Sir VG: I had the same problem; my ROM didn't have a 512-byte header. If you pad the front of your .smc file with 512 null bytes, the IPS should patch properly. Another neat trick mentioned earlier in this thread is that if the .smc and .ips file have the same name, SNES9X will automatically load and patch the ips without modifying the original ROM (so you don't have to actually use an IPS patching tool at all) If you want, I can post up a 512-byte file of null values that you can prepend to your smc file using copy /b (or cat, if you are using *nix)

Okay, I finally got around to adding the header to my ROM so that I could play this game. I played through the game and watched the run and was really amazed! As far as entertainment goes, this run is definitely worth publishing. It uses lots of cool tricks, even if it doesn't use the arm pumping and saves the animals in the end. The route used was also extremely cool and inventive. The run is pretty high quality, but most of all the game is incredible for a TAS. It's very sequence break and shinespark friendly.

It's been almost a month since this run has been submitted, and there's just... no progress on it. Does hacked games require a higher YES count than non-hacked ones? If so, then that makes sense, but I think we've exhausted most of the votes on this board anyway. O_o; Just wondering.

Generally, opinions posted in messages are worth more than votes. So I think the answer is no.

Do you have any plans to continue this? The movie looks great, although I remember you saying something about one-rounding Spore Spawn. Have you discovered it afterwards or did you find out it wasn't possible? It sure doesn't seem possible because you can barely get 5 missiles in, let alone 10.

Hehe, I don't feel like continuing that right now, I'm currently doing something else. But I might want to do something like that later, but I'll redo it from the beginning if I decide to take that game up again. And I discovered that killing the Spore Spawn in one round was possible while I did that movie, but since I wasn't very serious about that movie, (I do these movies because I really enjoy playing in frame advance, for some reason.) I didn't care to execute the one round kill. I'd rather redo it from the beginning if I was to do that. Note: Look at the page linked to in FractalFusions signature if you want to know what I'm currently doing. ;)

Could someone post a direct link to the published Japanese version please? I'm not the best at finding the right rom and applying the patch and using the right emulaor with the right settings. :)

>Mr. MikeBastard Im sorry but "published at japanese site" means merely being uploaded my emulator movie file(smv file). So, there is no general movie file. :-(

>... link to the published Japanese version please? Since both the original ROM and the patched ROM contain copyrighted material, the only legal way to distribute a hack is by giving people the patch and let them get the ROM for themselves. If you don't want to go through all that trouble, you'll have to wait and hope that this will be accepted and published as AVI.

Could someone make an AVI-File of this game? That would be great, I can't wait longer for this run. :(

I'd also appreciate it if someone who has the resources could make an avi and upload it somewhere. If it's uploaded as a torrent I'd help seed of course.

Looks like alot of hard work went into this run (and hack). It can be improved, but that doesn't make it a bad run. I was entertained. I vote yes.

Well the game is a hack, so it sorta needs to be extra popular to get accepted. Also, it's obviously improvable. Even though I don't think the lack of certain things (i.e. the arm pumping and the perfect route) take away anything from the movie's entertainment value, the movie is still very hard to judge. Personally I'm all for accepting this one.

Although I also realize that this movie is hard to be accepted, Im very happy to hear your positive comments. thank you all! From the time I made it, I have examined amount of SM information and tried much to improve my skills. Now im more familiar to new techniques, and have some newest things never known before. So, I can improve this movie very much. To make it more perfect, I want your opinion about 100% routing. What can I do about routing?

Heh, I think there aren't many of us here who knows Metroid Legacy good enough (at least as good as you do) to find a more optimized route. So, I guess there won't be much help here. :| I'll re-watch this movie now to make myself sure there isn't any needless backtracking, but I won't promise I'll come with something useful as a result.
