I'll be trying out this game next. I won't be getting all the emeralds, because that could get pretty boring. Anybody else wanna try with me? Competition breeds perfection, you know.

I'm in. I'll start tonight/tomorrow night. Might need to brainstorm a route for scrap brain?

I'm just going level by level, make a savestate at the beginning of each level, and then playing it through a couple times, and then recording it finally. Oh, and I decided to go off of in-game time units, because as was mentioned in the Sonic 2 thread, if you beat a level too fast, you get a massive time bonus which takes a while to add in to your score. Here's my times so far. Green Hill Zone Act 1 - 0:27 Act 2 - 0:24 Act 3 - 0:53

Indeed, when you finish a level too fast you get a massive amount of score that slows down the movie a LOT. I'm just recording my playing without caring too much about the score. Here are my times: Green Hill: Act 1 - 0:27 Act 2 - 0:24 (didn't go for the boots, have to remake this stage) Act 3 - 0.39 Marble zone: Act 1 - 0:58

Marble Madness? Heh, funny name for Marble Zone. Anyway, as I mentioned in the Sonic 2 topic, these times are still not the best. Watch the movies at this page: http://www.soniccenter.org/videos.php?g=5

I am the originator of a good number of unique strategies for Sonic 1, 2, 3, and K that are used on that site, though certainly many of the optimal routes for maps were discovered by others. In fact, the Sonic 1 leader on that site, Ghost, is a protégé of mine. Though I no longer frequent that site due to a personal dislike of a particularly childish moderator, I have intimate knowledge of the games. If you need to know the strategy for a map that doesn't have a video, or you need to know why something in an existing video works the way it does, please feel free to ask me. In my opinion, the legitimate records on that site should not be hard to match with a slow motion rerecording emulator, so if you want to make a quality video you should try to beat or match their best.

To get you started I've made a recording of Green Hill Zone 2 being completed in 18 seconds. The GMV is available at http://www.geocities.com/xebranick/Sonic1gh2gmv.zip . The ROM I used was called "Sonic the Hedgehog (JUE) [!].bin" . This run isn't all that difficult to pull off on an actual Genesis, so I hope you don't have too much trouble achieving 18 seconds! Let me know if you have any questions. EDIT: Removed link to ROM and hostultra since it blows.

The file links on that page will give 404. It's good that way, because linking to ROM sites is not allowed on this board.

Sorry, hostultra blows. I signed up for some space on geocities, hopefully you can download from there. http://www.geocities.com/xebranick/Sonic1gh2gmv.zip Remember to copy and paste the URL into a new browser window, clicking the link won't work.

It works. Cool. :) I hadn't heard the Sonic level 1 theme music for like ... countless years.

Here's a GMV of the first three zones in Sonic 1. http://www.geocities.com/xebranick/Sonic1zones1-3gmv.zip Green Hill Zone 1 was finished in 0"25. The run itself is pretty much garbage, so there is plenty of room to knock off a few frames. I don't think 0"24 is possible, though. Green Hill Zone 2 was finished in 0"18, though it's a few frames behind the standalone GHZ2 I posted earlier today. 0"17 is definitely out of the question. Green Hill Zone 3 was finished in 0"34!!!! This run was nothing but fists and fangs the whole time, and I spent many rerecords hunting for single frames to knock off in search of the elusive 0"34. I can say with certainty that 0"33 can never be achieved. Enjoy!

Also, Lezard, I'd be very interested to see your take on the levels we've done so far, if you don't mind sharing your work in progress :) .

My times thus far: Green Hill Zone Act 1 0"25 Green Hill Zone Act 2 0"18 Green Hill Zone Act 3 0"34 Marble Zone Act 1 0"50 Marble Zone Act 2 0"57 Marble Zone Act 3 1"17 Spring Yard Zone Act 1 0"23 Spring Yard Zone Act 2 0"31 In addition to the GMV, I've compiled a zip file with savestates at the beginning of each act, so that you don't have to watch the movie all the way through if you don't want to. http://www.geocities.com/xebranick/

0"53 on Marble Zone Act 2 is a great time, indeed. I'll postpone further development until I see your run so that I can duplicate it. Post the GMV pretty please! EDIT: Well 0"56 is still great, GMV please ;) . Or if you are really opposed to putting up something on Geocities or the like, just watch my run and tell me where it is deficient.

http://www.geocities.com/xebranick I am making an entirely new run through of the game in an effort to make my play look more professional and aesthetically pleasing. Additionally every level was completed many frames faster than before and all bonus tags at the end of each level are collected. I have only finished redoing acts 1-4, the GSV is at the above site. Some interesting notes about each act: Green Hill 1 0"25 - Triple bounced at the beginning. - Double jumped the loop for extra speed. - Kept the invulnerability the whole level. - Weird ringing sound when the level ends, I'm not sure what caused it. - Retained control of Sonic even while the score was counting up. I exploited this to collect all of the bonus tags. Green Hill 2 0"18 - Very accurate fall from the ledge. - Didn't jump after getting boots. - Quintuple bounce starting with the invulnerability. - Retained control of Sonic even while the score was counting up. I exploited this to collect all of the bonus tags. Green Hill 3 0"34 - Very accurate placement onto the springs (this affects the time by a frame or two). - Bounced from the boots onto the second platform. - 10 seconds of airtime (!) due to an utterly gratuitous sequence of bounces. - Exceptionally quick boss battle. - Perfectly timed ending jump. Marble 1 0"48 - Much faster and cleaner execution of the first 12 seconds. This can be faster still if you don't collect the shield, but it doesn't matter. - Cleaner execution of glitchy jumps while waiting. - The fourth piston is not cleared as fast as possible. (It can be done nearly a quarter second faster than I do.) The spikes at ~29s in my video apparently use your time as a random seed for their initial state (and don't just pop out some fixed time after you spawn them, as I originally thought). 100+ rerecords were spent optimizing this section. One frame faster and the spikes are already there when you fall. - Cleared the falling blocks just past the lava without stopping. - 250+ rerecords were spent trying to find some way to not clip the corner at ~38.5s in my video. I can't do it. - Intentionally took damage to save time in an unexpected spot. Enjoy!

http://www.geocities.com/xebranick/Sonic1Acts1-5v2byxebra.zip Lezard, I guess I had to prove your typo possible ;) . I've added the fifth act to my version 2 run. Marble 2 0"53 - Made it to the button without braking. (That jump remains the most difficult part of the run.) - Found a very quick path to the pushblocks. - Made it past the spikes (!!!) . - Found a quick enough path at the end to justify skipping the invulnerability.
