Here's my improvement of Solar Jetman. It's 64.8 seconds faster than the existing movie by Slotermeyer. The improvements come mostly from more optimized flight paths, but also some route changes (most notably in level 2). I destroy the pod on purpose at least twice in this run, this enables me to go through a small wormhole and start back at the mothership.
Level 1: No boosters, so flight is very limited. Self explanatory.
Level 2: Improved route, saved lots of time.
Level 3: I go straight for the warp. *yawn*
Level 7: Almost exactly the same as the previous version. Time bombs are used to kill the big green ships. If you place a timebomb so that it touches the enemy, it will go off immediately. Thankfully it doesn't damage the player ship. :)
Level 8: Straight for the warp, even less interesting than level 3.
Level 13: This is the first level where I actually had to mind the boosters usage. Again very similar to the previous version, with some small changes. One time bomb was used to kill an armored enemy.
Level 12: A very big level with crazy gravity. I try to make it a little bit interesting by pretending to roll on the ground and stuff. I use up ALL the fuel and go to spaceman mode once, but it's OK since there's a spare pod right in the way. It might be faster if you could optimize the boosters usage to near perfection and not have to do that, but I'm not even sure if that's possible without being slightly slower. Anyway, this level is again mostly similar to the previous version. I skip the smart bombs, they're not necessary.
Final level: I try to destroy all the blue blob things, but it's not always possible. Some of them are just untargetable.
Bonus levels: No matter what you do in the cyberspace levels, it will always take the exact same amount of time. So the first one I collect all crystals, and the rest I try to do in interesting ways.

I think this is a great example of a game that is fun to watch tool-assisted because it's such a difference between a non-assisted run, and not because of glitches, rather, just extreme precision. I also had fun watching it at 200% speed because then all the momentum changes and smashing into walls looks even cooler, and also the music is higher pitched, making it more audible.

haha, that was very entertaining to watch! I'd tried that game out a while ago, and this really nailed it down better than I thought it would! Everything was done so precisely and perfectly, and yet at the same time whipping out ways to simply entertain, like that rolling crash in level 12 especially. And the bonus levels were all done differently AND in interesting ways! JXQ's 2x speed idea made it even better, though not entirely necessary ;P Yessa from me!

What bothered me most about Slotermeyer's run was that he couldn't even keep his ship steady when flying a straight line. Your movement looks much smoother, and you even added some non-obvious shortcuts. I liked the fuel-tank-juggling in level 13. The bonus stages made me laugh. Even if that costs time at the tally-up-screen, IMHO it's worth it. Now I'll just click 'yes' and try to watch it at 200%.

Tub, just so you know, it doesn't cost time at the tally-up screen. If you collect no crystals, you still spend the same amount of time on that screen as if you got 'em all.

Nice work. Your route change on level 2 is very clever and you did a good job optimizing the later levels. Also, your play on the final sequence looks a lot better than mine did. My only concern is that some of the playing around on 12 may have cost time. Still a yes.

It seems, that some encoders do it and other write only the nicknames in the movie. Or maybe they do it sometimes and sometimes not, or only the older movies don't contain the real names. I watched again in my own TAS movie, there is both inside. Real name and Nickname.

Those planets are huge, and this game physics is (or are?) very tricky on real time. Also somewhat impressive for a NES game (including those blue attractors and orange reflectors). The ship is very difficult to control when carrying those very heavy ship parts (I played this game for a few minutes and I this is what I felt just on the first level). So many planets, each one is huge. This is one of the games that probably made videgame magazines so useful in the past. Whoever made those graphics in some stages (specially the later bonus stages and that glowing color-changing final stage) must have been blind... They look so ugly and hurt my eyes! Very well played. The game is a bit long and the ship movement is slow, the 200% speed is very welcome.
