That hint system is going to get irritating fast, at least for me. "Hey hey hey hey hey you should go get this item that you skipped! It's over here! Don't you want to know about it?"

For future reference, how about anyone who desires to tas this beautiful game goes into the menu and disables the hint system? In my opinion, totally worth it.

There are Great parts, but with the cutscene-like-Loading-screen not emulated properly, it just looks liek you skip to places. I know some of those are cutscenes that are skipped, and that's fine, but i think we may need to wait until Dolphin can Emulate Load times properly. That being said, this was an awesome run!
We can still do unofficial runs until it's fixed, though ^_^

I'd prefer it if you didn't cut out the item collection popups, because it makes the game very hard to follow. (For instance, Space Jump First just looks like a suboptimal sequence of scandashes if you don't notice the Space Jump Boots being collected, which is a very much blink-and-you'll-miss-it sort of thing in that encode; and it's hard to notice that it allows Samus to double-jump because you hardly get to see the fact that she can't double-jump before.)

This is a good practice run, but I can see that its very very far from optimal. several of your dashes appear to be slower than running forward. though overall I am impressed with the speed of the run. Charge beam room could be a bit more optimized, there quite a delay in blasting the caps. you shot first with a power beam instead of just firing a missile. I can't wait t'll recording a video is more stable. I'd love to try another run of this.

if i had not shoot with the power beam the one mushroom would not explode dunno why. but yeah there are a few minor mistakes but i dont think that you saw them because the real mistakes can only been seen in slow motion i wasted a bit time because i bended a few dashes not perfectly and i forgot an R jump to save a bit time. all over i lost around 1.3 seconds in the after frigate part no problem...

How are you making those videos? It really doesn't look like it's being played back from a dtm.

i record it all with fraps in fullscreen mode i play with a 360 controller and xpadder an keybord to controller emulation programm that makes it possible to put savestates on a controller which makes tassing a lot easier for me. saving savestate one is made by pushing the right controll stick loading state one by pressing the left control stick. state two is made by pressing the start button and loading state two by pressing the back button. theres also a crash savety savestate (saving on state 3 and loading it from dolphin after the restart) for me.^^ i use this when state 1 AND 2 are crashing rarely state 3 crashes too if that happens i have state 4 on the last item i collected. i also saved state 8 and 7 on tallon IV for future runs which arent totally used to show speed like 20% attempts or the 21% speedrun which will be the most impressive runs from me. and im pretty sure there is no dash in the run which is slower than just walking -_-. ok back to states: i put it on R1 because you dont need it for metroid prime. normally i could easly dump my audio and put it in the video but dolphin is extremely buggy for my sound :( i tried a version on an tutorial on youtube but that was even worse. good luck for your next tasses petrie i cant wait for more.

Ah, you need to record the keypresses file if you want to submit it to this site. The judges must verify the file by playing it back on their emulators. If you record an avi with fraps we can't do that. http://tasvideos.org/TASHowTo.html

I think thats what hes doing, playing back the DTM, he just use fraps to record it instead of dumping avi from dolphin's menu for reason that I dont know.

Even if it cannot be submitted, it will surely be useful for reference for future runs, as well as provide us with great entertainment value. Publication is always ideal, but don't let that be your only goal. Moreover, any work you do now will be useful one day should you decide to do the project properly (once the tools are actually reliable for producing TASes).

I thought we established that Dolphin will never emulate load times "properly" since there are no "proper" load times. They are different for each console. You might get an average load time, but never a "proper" one.

Yes, why didn't you tell the guy in the 3 month old post who was specifically talking about a WIP that was just posted that too?

I started a Metroid Prime TAS just the other day, here's what I have so far (just the targets in the first room) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QORroKPd3VU progress will most likely be slow because this game is a douche when it comes to optimizing. once I get the PQ I'll put up public WIP on my channel and see how far I am ahead of mrspeedrun's "TAS" Anyone who want's to help can (unless you're bad at optimizing) just PM me on youtube if you're interested. http://www.youtube.com/user/itsPersonnal

While I've completed Prime a couple times, I'm unaware of the finer points of the game. That being said though, his WIP looked really optimized to me. But I like your attitude xD.

Could playing one another file on the memory card in dolphin cause desync?? my DTM won't play back anymore and this happened after I played ahead on my other save file to make it so I can skip cut scenes <_< Am I even allowed to do that?? like already have a save file so I can skip cutscenes??

No, you are not allowed to do that. Unless you have to clear the game once in order to play in hard mode (was a long time ago I played this game so I don't remember if hard mode is available from the beginning), then I think it's okay. Speaking of which, LpFaint99 has submitted a few patches regarding memory card. Check them out: http://code.google.com/p/dolphin-emu/source/list?name=GCMemcardFixes maybe they address your issue? If you are able, compile the latest dolphin and see what happens.

ok so unless I do a hard mode TAS I'm not allowed to skip cutscenes? that's kinda dumb >_> and yes you do need to complete the game to unlock hard mode

Basically the way this works is that either you start from a completely "clean" game (with nothing on the memory card), or you start with a "dirty" save that was set up ahead of time to enable some special game mode. But the dirty save needs to be verifiable, so along with the TAS of the special game mode, you need to submit a verification movie that generates the save. That verification movie doesn't have to be a TAS itself, so it should be easier to make. Basically the idea is that anyone with the emulator should be able to recreate your run. If your run requires certain prerequisites, then anyone with an emulator needs to be able to recreate those prerequisites too.
