Link, Fox, Mario Bros., and Pikachu-- generally uses a combination of dashing and reflector. Because of the very hard difficulty, these characters require edge guarding.
Yoshi, Kirby, and Fighting Polygon teams-- stays close to the ground when attacking so to save time, but sometimes it is advantageous to jump and attack (like say for the last of them). Character and pokemon spawns are manipulated through movement.
Break the Targets and Board the Platforms-- skips so to save time.
Samus-- because the lava rules out bottom vertical KOs (fall through glitch does not occur until around 20 seconds) and top vertical KOs take too long, damage is built up with a combo so to execute a horizontal KO.
Giant DK and Metal Mario-- Giant DK is easy to manipulate and dies relatively fast, but Metal Mario does not suicide, despite what Fox does, until around 15 seconds through the match.
Master Hand-- Uses most damaging and quickest attacks along with lasers when Master Hand is too far away.
Stick around for the credits and post credits.
The toughest measures are comparing jumps, as there are many different ways to jump. Along with that, many of the decisions depended on exact frame timing because the CPU will change their attack path according with the inputs nearly every frame.

Phil: Movie is repetitive and not impressive which is too far from what this site aims for, entertaining movies.

But if you don't unlock all the secret characters, you can't play all the bonus stages.

Even though the Metal Mario fight could perhaps be better, I enjoyed this run very much as it was very fast and entertaining. Voting Yes.

Thanks for putting up the link to the .wmv file. Voting YES, the run was very fast and, given the short duration of the video, entertaining. I would not enjoy a longer/ more thorough run of this game though, as it's too repetitive for my taste.

Vote NO. Before I start bitching, I'd like to say that I'm a Smash Bros. fan. I loved the original, I love Melee even more, and the fact that the Revolution's Smash Bros. is going to include wi-fi play makes me absolutely drool. Nevertheless, I don't think this is a good game to speedrun. Let me clarify that: I don't think this is a good game to TAS when aiming for fastest time. It's not entertaining. Sure, seeing exactly how fast Very Hard can be cleared is a bit intriguing, but after watching this run, I can honestly say I don't really care what the fastest time is, if that sort of technique is how it's acheived. I'd love to watch a run that aims for a fast time while remaining entertaining. Clearing Very Hard in 8 minutes with a lot more variety of moves would be far more entertaining than this thing, especially the Metal Mario fight. (I don't care if that's the fastest way; we're supposed to make wait times interesting, remember?) I think, anyway. I suggest we take a page from SDA's book and limit the TAS's of Smash Bros. to the bonus rounds. It would take a lot more skill in terms of command of the different characters and planning routes to clear each character's target tests than it takes to, well... do what this run does. *shrug* I just don't think that "perfection" is what we should be shooting for if "perfection" is nothing but spamming the same series of button presses over and over until the game is defeated. It doesn't show an effort to understand the game's mechanics, and it doesn't show any sort of skill or effort in finding new techniques. (Two of the things that made the best runs on this site as good as they are, particularly the Mario Bros. movies.) (By the way, if there are any Smash Bros. fans here who haven't watches SDA's videos for SSBM, you're really missing out. My jaw dropped after watching Samus' and Link's Target Tests.) *shrug* [/2 cents]

I'm not disagreeing at all about the break the targets thing. I think this should be done, but understand that right now there's really no way to do it. I was first and foremost a competitor of break the targets. At one point, the top three were malva (total around 2:22), myself (2:26), and mojo i think (sub 2:30). So when I found out about 64 tas, I naturally started doing perfect btt's (did wr pikachu [9.15] and wr mario [7.97]. It's just that there's no application for this on the site because there are no savestates allowed. Please do not vote no to this movie just because you would rather see a break the targets movie.

Voting yes for this, it was clearly better than the previous version... played on very hard, and more accurate. For me, the perfect movie of this game would: - Get all secret characters (this means playing the main game three times, if I'm not mistaken) - Once, beat very hard as fast as possible. - Once, go for highest score, get pacifist on all stages (exept for master hand) if possible) - Once, just go for entertainment, and show off stuff Then, 3 characters are unlocked, and the movie should continue on getting record times on break the targets. this will unlock the last character, and you can make record times on break the targets for everyone. Finally, make records for every character on board the platforms... the stop the movie. ... just a suggestion :P

Despite it all, I would probably vote Yes for this except that we already know that it's improvable at the "Clear the Platforms" bonus stage. If the goal is fastest completion, this can be completed faster at that stage.

you're right. it can be improved by about 15 frames. the drop through slipped my mind. in any case, i've tried unsuccessfully to hex it, but i suppose that would be an appropriate reason to reject the movie.

That sounds good, except it makes it tricky for someone to compete with that third run ("You didn't do it as entertainingly as the other guy! FAIL!"). Maybe the goal could be to get the greatest number of bonuses as opposed to the highest total score.

that's a good idea. that seems to be the only way for break the targets (btt) to be done. one fast as possible, one most bonuses (it shows the number of bonuses after the game), and one highest score (pacifist). then after, btt and btp.

Wow. Using Kirby sure sped up the Metal Mario fight. Are you considering a run with Kirby?

I'm not considering doing any run at this point. Yeah, Kirby can do Metal Mario much faster, but look how long Yoshi Team takes, for instance. It's a trade with any character. Overall, I still think Fox would be the fastest.

His samus, MM, and hand were all pretty good. Everything else sucked. But he obivously didn't have solid goals, so that is why. I am not convinced that Fox is the fastest after seeing Kirby. That suck, hold, split strat is not too slow.

His goal was to get the highest possible score. He had to get pacifist wherever possible, exploit the unique bonuses of each level, and end each level with fighter stance. Speed was less important than score, so it's not meant to be compared with the runs we have here. Nico, I hope the reason you're not planning to do another run isn't because of the feedback from your two submissions. All submissions get nitpicked, and fighting games are wide open to comparison and criticism because there are so many characters to choose from. I only voted No because you could have fallen through the floor in Board the Platforms, so I didn't see the point of publishing a run that was going to be obsoleted immediately after. I guess you were unable to hex edit that in, but I hope you'll consider doing another run if this one doesn't get published.

i know. i'm all for criticism and improvement, but it's just that i'm kind of burnt out on ssb tas for now. i don't know. i might do something later, but right now i'm currently working on improving a time attack for a game in real time.

Yes it is a 3d game. Yes it is popular. But seriously it's repetitive and the ending isn't there(?) or is very bad. There's nothing that impresses me. I am voting no.

What's wrong with the ending? Did Nico not advance it through to the end?
