Yeah, I was going to say it's not impossible. I don't think I ever used Drumstick when I got him. I actually thought Drumstick stunk pretty bad for a character you can unlock.
It wasn't all that hard for me to unlock T.T. And when I got him, I was little, and I was so used to Pipsy's controls that I immediately thought T.T. was horrible. >_>
i actually beat the entire game with conker, somewhat heavy, but quite drivable in a car regardless
i wonder if we could get the bosses to kick the character forward with optimal momentum in certain cases
its been a few years since ive played this though
could switch characters in between levels, but that costs frames remember, drumstick would be usable after he was unlocked, but i think switching characters will be inefficient
i would like to see this TAS
I tried my luck at this game but without much success. Even at my best, my fastest first lap for ancient lake was 15.56 and my star city was 28ish for first lap. So I made a video for fun of icicle pyramid to show a possible tactic.
Edit: I redid icicle pyramid and finished 13 seconds faster due to some cheap tactics and a better route. It's not nearly as interesting though.
Edit2: I made a TAS of everything up to the trophy race in the first world including Fire Mountain. It isn't optimized to the fullest and there are a few things I should have done but didn't realize until it was too far to go back and fix it but on the whole I think it is good. I didn't know the best character to use so I relied of the SDA run of this game to help out there. Here is the run.

I get the same.
Let me try right settings, like Pilotwings this game desynching doesn't feel right.
Edit: Jabo's 1.6, still desynch same spot. when making this, are you replaying the entire .m64 from the beginning to check for desynchs?

well, after having watched some of it, I like where you are going with this. However, as with many N64 racing games this has a *lot* of room for perfection. I'll get Fried to look at this, but be expected to have to get as close to perfection as you can.
also, would it be better to not have raw input enabled?
I just watched the first few tracks. The plane part at the beginning wasn't bad, but then when you switched to the car the driving quality was clearly much worse than the best non-TAS runs. I'd suggest watching all the vids on my site, and then start over from the beginning.
Fastest available vids: http://www.wrvids.com/Diddy%20Kong%20Racing/Fastest%20Available%20Vids/
Some car vids by me, done on Mupen64 with autofire (non-TAS): http://www.wrvids.com/Diddy%20Kong%20Racing/Michael%20Fried-autofire(mupen64)/
Edit: Also, a few tips:
While sliding, you can tap R to turn more sharply.
You can prolong your boost by jumping into the air (check my JF vid for an example).
Usually it's best not to release R as you go over a zipper, and wait until you start tapping A to slide again.
I am aware of the perfection involved in these sorts of games after reading the mario kart 64 thread. It will make a run of this game quite difficult as there are 80 or so tracks in total for the story mode to complete. By the way, when is the finish point for this game?
I don't know what the raw data option is but I unchecked it anyway this time around.
Thank you for your input and those tips. The run I posted was a test run so no real optimisation went into it. I feel I have enough practise now so I started again and did up to the start of ancient lake. I'm not sure if the starting route I use is faster than the previous but the more direct route would suggest that it is. Here is the run thus far.

Sorry, I just noticed I made a typo. That was supposed to say:
Usually it's best to release R as you go over a zipper, and wait until you start tapping A to slide again.
Edit: Btw have you tested out different characters? I always thought Banjo was faster than Bumper, though I might be mistaken because since I beat adventure mode I've never used anyone other than TT.
For JF, at the beginning of the big jump, try to stay closer to the wall on the right. Also I noticed that for the zipper before that, you hit it too far to the left. I'm not sure if it's possible to stay tight in this part of the track without sliding, because I find the sliding strat to be easier so I never tried not sliding here, but if you're not able to stay tight then you might wanna make an exception for this one zipper and just hold the slide.
Correct me if I'm wrong..but aren't Barrel Rolls only beneficial if you let go of A while you do them?
I don't know much about the plane. The only vehicle I'm good at is car. The barrel roll is clearly helping him. If you watch the speedometer then you'll clearly see his speed increasing by ~15 when he barrel rolls. Maybe that's not as much as it should be helping him. In other plane vids I've seen, barrel rolls bring your speed up to ~140. Maybe he's doing them wrong, or maybe bumper is just a bad character, I'm not sure.
Edit: I thought of an idea to save some time while doing barrel rolls. In addition to increasing your speed, it also moves you to the side, either left or right. It seems silly to alternate and zig-zag from left to right. I think it would cut down a bit on distance if you start out by tilting yourself to the side, and then throughout the rest of the straight do all the barrel rolls in the same direction (for example tilt yourself to the left, and then do many barrel rolls to the right).
I did a test, and this vid will show that barrel rolls are indeed faster when you are not holding A.

I hope it's not too hard, if you plan on redoing. =/
I did some testing and found that Banjo is marginally faster than Badger but Badger has more acceleration and a better turn rate. I also found that in terms of speed, krunch > banjo > badger = conker = tiger > pipsy = turtle = diddy. So I am at a loss of the best character. If I was to make a decision based on what I know I would go with Badger.

I can't play the movie without the savestate although I did some testing and found that you do indeed go faster when A is not pressed when barrel rolling. It is easy enough to do as you don't need to press A at all when continuous barrel rolling.
So unless anyone objects or has conclusive evidence that I should do otherwise, I will use Badger again and restart the run.
My bad, I did forget the savestate. =/
Well, if you still want it, here it is

The first "run" in the movie is me HOLDING A, the second "run" is without holding A.
Hey, I'm wondering, does the gas tapping exploit work on the DS version of this game. My friend game tested that for nintendo.
"Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence."
I changed my mind on the badger/banjo issue. I haven't been able to show that either is faster but I will go with banjo because I got a good JF time with him. I've done up to the end of AL but I'm not sure if I've used the best tactics in terms of balloon usage so I might have to redo. Does anyone know if using three blue balloons separately is faster than combining them? Here is the .m64 of the run so far.
