I just thought I'd throw in that using a Mushroom for as long as possible before colliding with an object should be optimal. Just be careful not to trigger the boost too late, so that it weakens the boost in speed or duration. I'm sure you know this already, but I didn't want to risk it slipping your attention. Andreas

aha! I thought as such. I wonder even if the speed that the first half of your extended boost is dependent on the speed that your mushroom boost is when you hit the pipe. I'll look into that.

Bullshit!! Thats all I can say to this man. :-) Although it will be much faster that way, the entertainment-factor will be lowered alot compared to real and crazy laps like in the 1st course. Either way, the WIP looks amazing and I'm glad you both decided to work on this great game. Looking forward for more progress!

I think doing one or two tracks like that adds to the entertainment :) Luckily, you need a special type of wall to do it - so it can only be done on two or three tracks.

Fortunately not every course is going to be done by driving around in circles; most of them will be done "normally". It also does beat the WR's by a significant amount, adds a little bit of variety, and is totally unexpected for some viewers. edit: haha, once again you beat me to it. I need to start speedrunning making posts faster.

Well, the DP1 type of SC exists for MC4, DP3 and KB2. The GV tracks and RR all have similar SCs. CI2(, VL1) and BC1 will be using feathers to go around or parallel to the finish line, and with the feather business used in other BC2 tracks, the water finish line tricks and infinite boosting in MC3, the tracks left without as much of recurring SCs are GV1, (I think it might be faster not to use the finish line SC here.) CI1 and VL1&2, (Since those might be faster to do without the SCs also. Again, I don't know.) Andreas

Seriously, did anyone understand what this man just said? :) I mean what does SC, DP1, MC4, DP3, KB2, CI1, VL1 etc stand for?

Everybody used to Super Mario Kart will understand these acronyms. (I did write BC2 instead of BC at one place, though. ^_^;) Just for future reference: Track types MC - Mario Circuit DP - Donut Plains GV - Ghost Valley BC - Bowser Castle CI - Choco Island KB - Koopa Beach VL - Vanilla Lake RR - Rainbow Road Other phrases/lingo and whatnot. Lakitu - Tows you back on track. SC is commonly used for "shortcut". Bumper - Jumpbar Shrooming - Activating a Mushroom Everything can be found in the speedrun wiki for the Mario Kart series. Andreas

They're the names of the courses. But yes, it's still confusing. It's in essence the entire route of the whole run laid out, as to what type of race each course is going to be. 3 types: 5 extended boosts like in MC1, circle turning like in DP1, and using the feather.

I've typed the track SCs once before in a different topic, and I didn't want to do it course by course again. It will all make sense eventually. I was just trying to shed some light on how frequently shortcuts will be used if you're aiming for the lowest race time. Andreas

After a lot of testing today, I could not get Toad to match Bowser's times. in essence, Toad's extended boosting is faster, but i couldn't get it to outpace Bowser's lap times. plus, Toad's better turning actually was more difficult for me to control, and the driving over dirt speed wasn't enough to let Toad outpace Bowser. So statistically Toad is better, but in reality Bowser is better for out needs. It did confirm that items are predetermined even more, since with Toad I landed on a square at 5"62 and got a mushroom, at the exact same time that Bowser did, but on a different square. Huffers is almost done with GV1, and then I'll take on BC with Feathers.

first try at Ghost Valley 1: 42.77 seconds (best non-TAS time = 48.42 seconds) I'm going to have a go at improving that now, though. edit: 2nd try: 39:64 I'm going to have a third go at improving it though.. I think it can be bettered.

Hot damn fidgety! That third race rocked. (I'm quite uneducated on SMK mechanics) Why didn't you do the same as the last lap for every lap? Is it slower?

I actually tried doing that trick on every lap, and got a time of about 50 seconds. Lakitu picks you up, takes you across the finish line (fast), but then takes ages to drop you back onto the track - which makes the lap after take ages. By doing it on the last lap, you get a quick lap, whithout repercussions for the lap after.

the last lap is special. the same lap skip in DP1 sort of works here by turning around and jumping into the void. However, the fastest way to do it is by turning around at full speed. Doing it 5 times only beats the WR by 2 seconds, since you have to go forward, gain momentum, turn around, and jump in. Once you're back on the track, you have no speed, which makes it slower. However, doing the maneuver on the last lap is fastest. edit: aw c'mon!!!!!!!! 3 for 3 you've beaten me to it. this is no fair

In one part of the 2nd to last lap in GV1, you hit 2 walls. Is that done on purpose, or is it unavoidable?

A) I tried lots to avoid them and couldn't B) I hit them on the way up in a hop so they didn't slow me down C) No-ones pointed out I used Mario to stay on the track by ramming him comicalflop's promised to do Bowser Castle...

Absolutely smashing performance! My opinion about the circling around at the start in the second race: I would much rather prefer you guys completing a race like you did in the third race, that was beautiful! Edit: I think this run will easily get a star :) Oh and, I bet if you guys keep up this pace, it'll be done very soon.

Yeah, but Donut Plains sucks. Seriously. I always hated that track anyway. The main reason the 3rd track looks better than the 1st was luck - the mushrooms mostly didn't require much slowing down to get.
