Timeattack is not time attack
Says who? You? Ok, let's give new meanings to other words as well by removing or adding spaces. From now on "speed run" is a run made by using savestates and slowdown (vs. "speedrun" which is an unassisted one). If someone gets confused, that's his problem, not ours. Let's also define "save state" with the meaning that no savestates were used; that is "a run using save states" means an unassisted run which does not use savestates. Hey, I know a good one: "Un assisted speedrun" is a speedrun using savestates and slowdown (vs. an "unassisted" one). Certainly people will notice the space and immediately know that it is an assisted run. Of course we can also define that "slow down" means that no slowdowns were used. Certainly people will notice the difference; there's a space and all. After all this sarcasm: You are wrong. A time attack is a timeattack is a time attack. The meaning does not change regardless of whether you add or remove a space. It's the same thing.
Warp, why do you start such stupid topic? You love hatred in this world or what?
Because the original use of "timeattack" was a misuse, it was wrong, it's not descriptive and it potentially causes confusion. Why should we deliberately use a confusing term? Is it some kind of pride thing?

Yup. But I'm tired of reading the same things over and over again, so maybe I should try to stay out of this topic...

Are you actually trying to get the official policy of this site changed, or do you actually hope to change the minds and feelings of stubborn people? 'Cause if you're only looking for the first you should probably say that, but if you're trying to do the latter you're going to inevitably fail, and should probably give up the witch hunt before you get a real flame war going.

Are you actually trying to get the official policy of this site changed Actually that's a pretty good idea. Timeattack isn't defined yet in the glossary, and I'm an editor so if I wanted to I could put in wikipedia's definition and say that timeattack doesn't mean a save state run, but I'm too lazy to do that now and I'd rather play more Diddy's Dash, but I guess I'll try to type up a good definition sooner or later if no one else does.

You guys shoul either get a really good short name that means it all and confuses nobody and everyone agrees with OR forget about it and do as someone said: let time find the best term.

So, let me ask back at you: What is your problem with the term TAS and why do you want to use "timeattack" instead? Is it some kind of pride thing ("why would we need to explain ourselves? if stupid people think these are genuine unassisted speedruns it's their problems, not ours")?
In that particular post, the reason I did it was out of spite. I used it because you didn't. In general, though, I use whatever other people are using, because, as I said before, I don't think it really matters. That said, what was the point in your latest reply to my post? Before that post, I had already stated that I hadn't read this thread as thoroughly as I could have. I didn't present any arguments against your summarization of this thread because I agree with your point, in general - that a space hardly makes a difference, and that, although it may not be as common as the term "time attack", that the term "tool-assisted speedrun" is more accurate. So really, I think the only thing we disagree on is how frequently the term "time attack" is used synonymously with the term "tool-assisted speedrun". Unfortunately, I don't really see how one can provide non-antedotal evidence, either way, and as that isn't the main issue that this thread is attempting to address, I'm content with dropping this. Are you?

I will just have to say one more time that TAS, Tool-Assisted Speedrun, is not that fitting either since simply, the main focus is naturally on the term "Speedrun", and as stated already and what is really a big issue, is the fact that it's not about speed always. I really would like a new term that which people can agree on AND a term that fits to all categories of movies that are presentated on the site. "Speedrun" is just not good and descriptive enough.

i like cheatyface. and yeah, thats about as seriously as ive taken this (though its all been fun). ...should we take more suggestions and then do a poll of this or what? oh, and i take it the TAS is because the videos are now being labled tas instead of time-attack?

the directory in my hd is called "superplay", for all of those that are assisted (hence the "super"). both timeattack and aesthetical. unassisted means speedrun to me... (yeah I admit it's not clear, since it doesnt count unassisted aesthical movies, but I dont know many...)

To a casual viewer "superplay" may just mean that the player has practiced the game for years and is showing off almost superhuman skills. There's nothing in "superplay" which hints at tool assistance.

Yeah really. We could call them "Superplay (http://tasvideos.org/WhyAndHow.html if you don't understand) Videos" but if people don't take a little initiative to find out exactly what these videos are, then there is no magic name that satisfies everyone. If people don't understand and don't want to go and find what's going on, then let them be confused. I personally think Superplay is a great name. I have no problem with Time Attack or TAS either. They are what they are - why the hell has labelling become so important? Also I think cheatyface runs would be a sweet name.

Though no one is ever going to agree on anything and nothing can be done about it, and arguing for or against any particular name is completely futile, as is suggesting a new one ... besides all that, I was completely serious when I suggested we call them cheatyface runs. That particular name was a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I really have no problems integrating "cheat" somewhere into the name. It will shut the Hell up all of our haters, and the people that already love us won't think less of us because they already understand and love what we are doing anyways, and newcomers will still love what we do because these videos are @#$%ing awesome.

Call them "cheaty link movies", because I used the term "cheaty Link moves" when I thought Link was a cheap character in Super Smash Brothers!

Link? In SSB? Cheap? More like terrible. Quite possibly the worst character in the game. Terrible recovery, drops like a rock, can't combo at all, and pretty slow on top of it all. (commence topic derailment)

Besides we all know Jigglypuff is the best character anyway. Fast, easilly spammable air moves, great edgeguarder, nice recovery. There's nothing wrong with Jigglypuff.

Because what we do here is so much different than what people do without tools.

I guess I should have specified labelling within our own community, my bad. We have the term Tool Assisted Speedrun (even if it's too long, and TAS is "difficult to pluralize"). Why call it seven different things if it's just going to further confuse people, especially when the original goal of this topic was to reduce confusion in the first place? And asking the general population to change how they refer to something / someone is just a waste of time, in my opinion. How many people thought it was stupid when Puff Daddy told everyone "my new name is P. Diddy, so call me that now"? (Or does no one here listen to hip-hop besides me...) And with that, I'm done posting here.

Or piff duddy. There will never be any peace on this topic, thus it is best to let it be. This topic seems to me as though it has been the venting of personal opinions (perhaps from several individuals) to attempt to re-route the behavioural core of this community into thinking they are guilty sinners who should be punished. Both sides have good arguments, and as such, it's a deadlock until either: 1) People accept the current term and the discussion dies out. 2) People change the term because they are sick of hearing about it, then get pummeled by someone else because it's misleading. If we continue changing, my Jedi Sense® tells me that in a few years from now, the videos on these sites would be called: "Videos of videogames done really quickly, but we used and emulator and made a lot of thing we can't do if we sat by a console so these movies are not real timeattacks or speedrun"-movies

and TAS is "difficult to pluralize" I didn't have any trouble pluralizing it when I made my topic called "Which classic games don't have TASs yet?"
