I'm thinking about doing a run for this game. There are quite a few nice bugs that can be exploited. This game also seems to be the black sheep of the series, but I liked it a lot. Even an any% run of this game is long, though. The record is just barely under an hour. Any thoughts?

It'd be long, sure, but go for it. By time-attacking it I'm sure it can be cut to under an hour. I'd like to see it myself. Which items are 'necessary' to complete this game? I don't think you need things like the Varia Suit and Screw Attack, do you? I think the world record DID pick those items up, so not getting them may shave some time off. I can't quite remember though.

From what I can remember he picks up quite a lot of stuff. I bet most will be unnecessary. I have no route planned yet, or anything. Varia may be required for the lava diving sequence break, though. I guess I should find out the minimum amount of missles required for the queen, and go from there. Here's a little minute or so test I did. The last half is me plaing around in real-time, so you can ignore that. =P http://www.jx3.net/tdg/Zoi/m2test.vbm ROM:Metroid 2 - Return of Samus (UA) [!] Things learned: *Rolling is much faster than running, but bouncing is very bad. *Jumping has pitiful horizontal speed. *Jumping is can be very precise up to about 1/2 of the max alititude, after which it goes to maximum height. *You don't jump quite as high if you jump while crouching. *You can jump out of morph ball even while moving! *You can jump after being hit, even while already jumping!

I guess that it can be used on Time Attacks, unless someone has a say as to why it shouldn't be used. It's not legal to use on Speed Runs, that's for sure.

The metroid2002 site shows a method where you only need five missiles, though it seems like you might need energy tanks to pull it off. But that should help with your planning.

You can prevent bouncing as the morph ball by unmorphing and morphing as soon as you hit the ground. It takes two frames and is a bit faster than unmorphing and then falling. You seemed to do this already. If you do a one frame jump some time before falling, you'll fall a bit faster. It's best for long falls, I've noticed. It can be used in that first long fall where you're destroying blocks by jumping a bit before the brick is destroyed. The short jump can be used to help you be more precise on taller jumps when an ordinary jump would overshoot you. Otherwise I'd go for a tall jump since you ascend faster. I too have a test run. It goes up to the first metroid. It appears you handled some jumps better than I did. The important thing about metroids it would seem isn't their speed of death, but rather how you can herd them towards the exit. That's why I didn't attack that one as soon as possible. Are you going to be using secret worlds for this? I'd like to see how they can used used, and if there are others that are unknown. The select glitch could also be used to get some obstacles out of the way, so some non-secret world applications could be interesting. Remember that switching between weapons holds the game up for a frame. I think this may screw with the buffers causing the glitch, but it also means you shouldn't switch unless you absolutely have to. Edit: I also have to wonder which of the three ice beams is best to collect. It's not needed immediately because of bump jumping, but it's needed nonetheless.

Is there any version of this game that's in color? I've only seen it in B&W, that is the only reason I've never played it. And I'm sorry to say this, but I wouldn't watch this in B&W if the gameplay itself isn't extremely entertaining. I watched a few minutes on the speedrun on SDA, but hardly managed to stay awake for the first few minutes. Best to say this too, or I'll be attacked :P ; This is just my opinion. And also: "I do, personally, accept B&W runs, but not this game"

You can patch your ROM, but it might break the timing. Apparently it enables SGB or GBC support...

I actually prefer this game in black and white. I think it's rather ugly in color. But this topic is neither here nor there, so let's cut it short. I'd like to see a glitched run.

I heard this game does have some built-in colors, but VisualBoyAdvance doesn't support them. I was messing around with left+right and up+down a few days ago. It seems that holding opposite directions makes Samus go into the facing forward pose while jumping, which looks really funny. I think there are some movement glitches you can pull off, too, though I'm not exactly sure how. A couple of times I grazed the edge of a platform with the stand-jumping Samus, and it made her slip off extra fast. I also managed to do a regular spin jump, but in super slow motion. I'm really not sure how THAT happened.

The game was released before Game Boy had color variety. But the Super Game Boy allowed you to "colorize" old games. VBA allows to pick and choose whatever four colors you want...just go to Options -> Gameboy -> Colors... I doubt the movie would record those colors used, so I guess whoever plays the movie can set the colors as they like.

By the way, Snow Dragon's FAQ claims that the queen takes 150 missiles. If it's anywhere near that, I'd say just go for the bombs, but that's me.

I wonder if you have to actually lay the bombs in her stomach or not. I usually just bombed her mouth. Irregardless of how few missles you might need to kill the queen, don't you need a ton of missles to kill the Metroids first? I remember those Omega Metroids taking a lot of hits before dying.

I remember hearing that Omegas can be killed faster by shooting them in the back. In fact, I've heard of people beating the game with just an ice beam, the varia (or an energy tank, one of the two), and bombs, so a lot of extra missiles won't be necessary. And if push comes to shove, remember that item drops aren't a problem. Edit:

Isn't it also possible to skip the bombs in this game? I think somebody did that before.

There is already a walktrhough that uses the select trick to move between ruins and cut out a majority of the game.

I'm still undecided on whether to select-glitch or not, but probably favoring using it. That means I'm going to have to do extensive testing of it. I haven't played this game in quite a long time, and I'm not nearly as familiar with it as I am with Metroid 1 or Super Metroid. I used to own it, but I think it got lost in a move somewhere a few years ago. :( Ferret, I was planning on using that strategy against the metroids. Try to time their death as close to exiting the room as possible. That would make the most sense for speed, at least. I asked about the missles for the Queen, because I'm almost certain it would be much faster than bombing her, although I'm thinking the time wasted collecting them won't be worth it, especially if it really is 150. [Edit]Just watched your test movie, Ferret. Holy crap does that Alpha die fast! It seems we're pretty much on the same page as far as the rest of the stuff.[/edit]

If you decide to use the select glitch, I know for a fact that there is a secret world near the very beginning of the game which takes you straight to the Queen, so you'd probably get a very small time.

Thank you! ;D Go ahead and continue the movie. I have no interest in continuing mine. I also have part of a basic route planned. It utilizes secret worlds and stop as soon as you eneter the secret one. Collects the varia and has a good deal of bactracking, so I'm not sure if it's the best. CAD: Didn't Darth Nat or someone do some extensive testing with that? I remember someone confirming that you HAVE to destroy all Metroids, otherwise A) the queen won't show up even if you break into her room B) the ship won't be active. Might not be possible, but worth investigating nonetheless.
