Donkey Kong 3 is a one-screen shooter in which the player uses a spray to drive out the mighty Donkey Kong while guarding the pot-plants from enemy insects.
This run plays Mode A as the currently published run does. Mode B increases Kong's HP and spawns more lesser enemies, which wouldn't exhibit more interesting stuff while lengthening the run that is merely 2885 frames long, which is 513 frames faster than [2175] NES Donkey Kong 3 by MESHUGGAH in 00:56.54 and 52 frames faster than mtvf1's WIP.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: FCEUX 2.1.6
  • Aims for fastest input time.
  • Allows deaths to save time.
  • Manipulates luck.

Comments

Just one more death to skip the scoring in Stage 2. The frame rules cannot be helped.

Other comments

Thanks to MESHUGGAH and mtvf1 for their published run and WIP, respectively. Additionally thanks to mtvf1 for the encode.

feos: Judging...
feos: As it was found out, this game needs a few more levels to be beaten to be considered completed by our rules, because as it is right now, not all the unique content has been shown, and that's required for games that have no ending.
At first I planned to set it to delayed, because appending just a few extra levels is not going to change the feedback of this movie. But recently we made the research requirements for ending-less games stricter, and depending on where unique content stops appearing in this game, the route might change.
Since the queue is overly bloated lately, I decided to reject this movie. When the author is ready to work on a more complete version, we can discuss the ending point accordingly, before a new submission is made, to prevent another possible rejection. I will be helping with research then.

feos: Unrejected per rule update.
feos: Clearing the branch since it's just a difficulty mode, and accepting over [2175] NES Donkey Kong 3 by MESHUGGAH in 00:56.54.

Judging by this guide, accepting the current DK3 run was a mistake, because it doesn't max out the difficulty and doesn't show all the content of the game, which is required for games without an ending. The rules have been updated since then, but there's still no way to publish a movie of such a game if not all unique content has been completed. And there's also a rule that we can't accept a movie that breaks the rules just because it obsoletes an older movie that breaks the rules. It means in order to obsolete a movie that doesn't properly complete this game, we have to have a movie that does so properly. Until such a movie appears, we're destined to have the former published like nothing happened. klmz, do you plan to make a new run of this game that fully beats all its unique content? If you need help figuring out the proper stopping point, let me know.

I think complete 4 stages is OK, because there are only 3 types of stages in this game. What's meaning of all unique content? Do you mean the new emenies? In fact, it could be used luck manipulation to make them never appear.

The rules I linked talk about this in details: http://tasvideos.org/MovieRules.html#GamesWithoutClearEnding Ever since the Vault was invented, games without an ending were required to exhaust all their content to be considered beaten. This is similar to banning single level TASes: when the game was designed to last longer than just one loop, and when it explicitly provides more content after that, we can't consider it beaten after just one loop.

Too many old games havn't he real end, and only more difficult stage by stage. So how many stage completed should be accepted? If this game has this problem, this published has a big more problem. [3722] NES City Connection "warpless" by link_7777 & EZGames69 in 04:35.60 You can see this. In fact, in this game, level7 is different from level 1 to 6, just use the same back screen as level1, and level8 is different, too. So what's the real end in this game? It still be published, doesn't it?

The run itself seems good, the entertaining deaths, and I liked the pummeling at the end. Seems like the ending may need some more research, but having done none I would guess one loop through the stages on the harder mode? We researched and discussed City Connection, and the later levels do look different, but if you look at how the game works it doesn't really qualify as new content. It is really just the same set of platforms over again the game just applies some offset to the positions based on the stage counter. It resets to the initial layout when the stage counter rolls over of course.

Just read the movie rules I linked. If the difficulty doesn't have any designed limit, we don't require to max it out.

Yeah, what link_7777 said. We did the due research. And we will do it for this submission as well.
