Comments

This is an improvement over my current run by roughly 15278 frames or 4:14.03. After 4 years and 4 months, I come back with another TAS of Goonies 2, which is one of my favorite games. This time, the game will be totally glitched and broken, as there are several new glitches found in the past years starting from my run.

What's new in this run?

  • Speed Boost
Found by me, expanded by ソーイ (sooi).

When you stands on an horizontal moving platform, and then you move on the same direction of the platform, you can instantly increase the speed by moving forward then at a certain optional frame, release everything but the A button to jump. That will give you a super speed while jumping only, as if you land the speed automaticaly returns to normal.

Firstly, I found that glitch and I used it in my current run, also I found what is called damage boost (same as Adventure Island 4) that gives a great speed while jumping only, the setup is similar to speed boost but the frame is precise and stored in one frame only after taking the damage. Thanks to sooi, a Japanese player who combined these two tricks and added to them the use of the bomb to produce an insane speed that can gives the ability to wrong warp to other places and make a new route that saves huge time (something reminds me of super sliding on OoT and MM). Sliding after taking damage on a horizontal moving platform is much faster than on ground and jumping with that speed can breaks the game sprites and gives new ones that still usable in the area where the glitch happened, going to another place fixes every thing, however that break is very useful since it creates ladders to go up or down. Going down is better and easier than going up since sometimes, a ladder can be cut in middle but if it is near to the ground, you climb on it like if it exist. Those ladders are the most useful in this run.
  • Glasses glitch
Found by Dragondarch.

The glasses can be used even if they are not present in the tools menu, by replacing them with the transceiver. You can make the game think that the transceiver is the glasses by pressing B in one frame then after one another, press A to execute the, again this is a precise trick since it has only on frame to perform. This glitch skips the visit fir glasses as well as skipping the boomerang and so, getting the key holders from enemies waste a lot of time, and the better option rest is entering the door containing the keys in green cave and take them, however, as soon as I go to the water, I get that boomerang because I need it later for getting keys from enemies. This saves around 42sec.

I would like to special thank:
  • ソーイ (sooi): for his route, and expanding the speed boost glitch. I recommend checking his channel for more The Goonies 2 TASes
  • Dragondarch: for the new glasses skip trick.

feos: Fantastic finds! Accepting this as a significant improvement over [2093] NES The Goonies II by McBobX in 15:07.69 and moving this branch to clear Moons.
Regarding branching, the speed boost that allows new shortcuts and the out-of-bounds techniques presented here don't look like one would be able to get a run that avoids them to Moons, because the current any% branch that doesn't have them is in Vault. So on one hand, we can reasonably predict that the "no OOB" branch will be poorly received, and even if its feedback is decent, the difference is still not that dramatic to go the "X glitch" VS "no X glitch" path here, because of the reasons explained in this judgment note. So this run is not just a speed improvement over the current one, but an entertainment and content quality improvement too, the old strats are now completely obsolete.
The same likely goes to the 100% category: its current publication doesn't have too good rating and submission feedback regarding entertainment, so the chance for a "no OOB 100%" run to be acceptable is also very low.
feos: Updated with the 43 frame improvement.
feos: Another update, 33 frames faster.
Fog: Processing.

Very entertaining, not a single boring second from the bridge onward. I laughed out loud out of surprise when Mike fell throug the water and climbed through the void. Will this obsolete the current branch or become a "warp glitch" branch? If the latter, the new non-warp-glitch-glitches used in this movie should still be acceptable in the any% and 100% branches. Anyway, great TAS McBobX. And thanks for making it!

I'm also confused about the branch of this run, since it forces warp glitches rather than a normal route like in the current. I left the branch field blank to mean that this is an any% run; but I don't know what the judger will say about that. If this will a "warp glitch" run, then I will make a normal any% as well as a 100% with the glasses glitch, if not, I will only make a new 100% run with warping and glasses glitches.

I would like to replace the movie file with this one: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/35968640577127097 It is 43 frames faster version than the actual one

Edit: I ask once again for replacing the movie file with this 33 frames faster version. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/35984000086373327 Falling from invisible ladder after warping from Volcano (exactly after frame 34440) saves 33 frames. Thanks to sooi for this improvement.

Should I set it to delayed while you guys are working on improvements?
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

I think this the final version, I will not improve anymore and those last two improvements are near to the end.

I really think this movie deserves a 'Notable Improvement' lightning bolt. Is it too late for a judge to make it happen?

This is really great an improvement to my surprise!
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do
